For those of you interested, here is a summary of the replies I recieved.
Thanks for the reponses and I have one to add that I've heard of but
haven't had a chance to check out. Its the Mile Away in Milford, NH just
off of 101A. I've gotten a good recommendation on it but haven't had a
chance to try it yet. Enjoy...

Boston has the Wursthaus in Harvard Square and Jake Wirth's in
chinatown (!), both German. Neither is exactly posh. Jake's is
more worth the trip for their lovely homebrew IMHO, but then I'm
not a big fan of German beer.
I think it's Cafe Budapest? Maybe just Budapest? Anyway, there's
a Hungarian restaurant in Copley Square in Boston that gets
consistently high marks. I've never eaten there though.

For German/Austrian food, you can try the Old Vienna Restaurant
in Westborough, MA. It's just off Rte. 30 at the traffic circle in
the center of town. The food I've had there has been really good,
though I've mostly had the specials, which don't fall into the
German/Austrian category as much as the regular menu. Great folk
music upstairs, too.

The Cafe Budapest in Copley Square gets good reviews though I've never
been there myself. It's the only mitteleuropa restaurant I know unless
you count some of the kosher places in Brookline.

Jakob Wirth (near Chinatown)
Fabulous 1800's beer-hall atmosphere (old wood, sawdust on floor,
etc.). Good beer. Mediocre food. Reasonable prices.
Wursthaus (Harvard Square)
I haven't been there in years. Was mediocre then. Large
selection of imported beers. Kitschy atmosphere.
You can see I'm not really excited about either of these places
(except the atmosphere at Jakob Wirth's). I used to think that this
was because German food was bad, but having tried a range of
restaurants in Germany, I can report that this is not true.
CAFE BUDAPEST (COPLEY SQUARE)
OK fancy-restaurant atmosphere. OK food. High prices. Not a
good representative of Hungarian cooking. (The best I had was not
in Hungary, but in Vienna...).
