Hi Folks,

I'm going to be riding from Boston down to Falmouth next Friday and wondered if anyone had any suggestions for an interesting route (back roads, dirt roads, coastline, etc). I'll probably stop in Sandwich for a sandwich and then ride down the canal path and onwards from there.

Thanks for your help,
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,

There are a couple of routes I have done down to Falmouth.  Neither have any dirt roads, but are pretty decent.

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/2009-Bike-MS-Cap-Cod-Getaway-2009-Saturday-75-Mile - I've modified this route along the coast, but I can't find that modified route at the moment.  The coastal route is nice.

Finding your way onto the Bourne bridge can be a little tricky, but take a look at the satellite view and you should be able to figure it out.

MA Bike Route 1 has worked fine for me:

You may need to compensate for construction or missing signage, so be
sure to take the map or the route on a GPS.

Dave,

There are some dirt roads on the south shore. I have a google map of them, but I can't seem to pull the link, so here is a screen shot of the area.
Old sandwich road is long, but I recall it being poorly graded, probably due to heavy use. The smaller roads near Long & Halfway Ponds are better graded, less used and more scenic, though a bid muddy in sections.

Dave,
I spent some time last week trying to find the entrance to the bourne bridge
Turns out the path is behind the Starbucks at the rotary

Dave

When I ride Medford to Provincetown there is one stretch which is paved that is pretty quiet you could consider incorporating in your route to Falmouth.

Leaving Route 27 on the Hanson Pembroke town line.
Plymouth Street  Pembroke (becomes)
Oak Street Halifax (becomes)
Grove Street Plympton (bear left becomes)
Grove Street Kingston

But it points you more toward Kingston and Plymouth than the Bourne Bridge so maybe its not so good.
