Anyone use Shimano STI integrated brake/shift levers (say, Ultegra 6700 or similar) and long-reach side-pull breaks (like the Shimano BR-R650) with 28-30mm tires?

Unlike Campy and Tektro brake levers, I believe the Shimano ones don't have a quick-release mechanism. Is that true? Do you have trouble removing or inserting larger tires?

Thanks,
max

STI levers don't have QRs. However, those calipers do, unlike recent campy calipers.

On my Rivendell I have tires measuring 29mm wide on Mavic Open Pro rims. The caliper's QR doesn't spread the pads enough to clear the tires, so I use the cable adjusters on the calipers as well. So between the QR and the cable adjuster I get plenty of spread for the tires.

I just moved to SRAM brake levers. No quick release... and I run those Shimano brakes.
Conti 4 season 28s clear fine with a bit of a tug. (Open Pro rim front, Aerohead OC rear).

Anything wider and I have to adjust the barrel on the brakes.
Debating putting an inline adjuster on next time I re-cable, as I can run 35mm cross tires on this bike.

Thank you everyone for your input (much of it off-list).

Consensus:

- Shimano and SRAM brifters do not have a quick release mechanism. This is in contrast to Campagnolo brifters and to Tektro brake levers (which I use today).

- Shimano long-reach side-pulls (BR-R650, etc.) have a cam-actuated quick release mechanism (I am familiar with it since I own those and similar brakes), but it does not provide enough travel to clear a fully-inflated 28+mm tire. Ironically, recent Campagnolo calipers don't have a quick release.

- Two interesting ideas:
  - Use Campagnolo brifters with Shimano or SRAM calipers.
  - Mount a brake cable adjuster such as the (expensive!) Shimano SM-CB90.

Thanks again!

Update from another friend: apparently Tektro R539 road calipers (47-57mm reach) have large enough QR travel to accommodate 35mm tires without requiring a QR on the brake lever. Not shabby!

Max,

If those 47-57 Tektro calipers are like they were 10 years ago, they are flexible and, thus, brake less powerfully than the Shimano medium reach calipers (which are heavier/thicker and offer stronger stopping power.)
