So, I went up to this for the second time ever last night, but it was my first time to race, and here's the short version of my report: Ow.
The facility is pretty much as described in the link, although the temps are not actually sub-zero this year, so the hall was pretty warm. They had 3 waves - one for girls, and brand-new guys, one for new guys, and one for fast, wiley guys. The first race was a scratch race, the second was a points race, and the third was a "reverse snowball" which is like a points race but goofier. The course for the scratch and points race, designated by cones, was kind of a U shape, with 2 left turns and 3 hairpins, and the course for the reverse snowball was the same, with a chicane instead of 3 hairpins.
Some of the U of M guys were on cross bikes, but most of us were on road bikes (even with 23s on), and it was fine, if a little wobbly. The turf gives a TON of resistance - I've never worked so hard to go 10 mph. Still, it was a lot of fun and GREAT intensity. I never, ever work that hard on the trainer.
The next one is the world championships of indoor grass track racing, so if anybody wants to check it out, I'm sure we can find you a place to stay!
