I've wanted to go to one of these auctions for a few years, and always seem to realize on a Tuesday that I just missed it... But there's one on Saturday, and I don't have any commitments.

Anyone have advice for a first-timer? When to arrive, how long do they last, etc.?

I'm not really planning to buy anything, just want to go look.

Thanks,
Heath

I went to the last one, got there around 9AM to check out machines,
lots of junk machines to be honest, lots of multi-cades, ton of Golden
Tees, some old, some brand new.

They start auction around 10AM, and do the small stuff like Neon Signs
and such, which takes about 2 hours. Then the start on the classic
machines (pac/galaga/etc) and multicades, then they did all the big
sit down games and redemption machines first, then moved to jukes, and
then the rest of the machines, and finished with pinballs.

My most common thought at auction was "wow, I can't believe that sold
for that much" but there does appear to be a lot of owner bidding to
drive up prices and/or buy back machine if it doesn't sell for what
they want out of it.

Auction ended about 3 or 4PM and I drove home with nothing in the back
of my truck :(

It's fun to just check out and play the games, and talk to others
there.

There's a section in the r.g.p FAQ on auctions and what to take/expect.    I haven't been to an AGS auction in several years, so some of this may have changed.  The auction goes on ALL day - from morning to late night.  I know one I went to, we didn't leave until about 2AM.   With the high fees, buy backs and hassle to pay, I have found it easier to find machines on CraigsList.  The auction can be good if you want to go and see/play a bunch of machines.

Yeah, forgot to mention the high fees. 10% buyers premium (typical
rate for auctions) then 3% if you use a credit card, and around 7% tax
if you don't have resellers license, so you can add 20% to the bid
price if you win.

I should have said in my original post that I've read the general FAQs, etc., and that I was looking for advice specifically regarding the Winston-Salem auction (either AGS or the site). So while I appreciate the general stuff, this is particularly helpful.

Thanks,
Heath

My advice: Bring an extension cord - the ones that wind up are
especially nice. Bring something to haul your purchases. Bring a hand
truck. I don't think i ever went to an auction and didn't buy
something :)

I was actually thinking about going on Saturday since we're moving - I
always wanted ot take my 10 year old daughter to one. Not sure if I
want to drive that far just to show her and not be able to buy
anything though.

After starting the thread, I ended up not going, but I've put the next few on my calendar, and hope to make one of those.

I didn't go, but results were posted to rgp and the bash. Didn't look
like there were many pins there.
