friends of jock river reorganizational tomorrow evening

Everyone,

Brian Finch circulated the message below a while ago. The "friends"
organizations of the three tributaries of the Rideau River have very
different histories - the Friends of the Tay Watershed -
http://www.tayriver.org/ - does a lot of stuff and has a website
that's been updated to announce "FoTW Annual General Meeting for 2012
To be held 3:00 to 5:00 pm February 28, 2013 at the Perth Museum."
(also a horrible animated gif of a flapping Canada Goose).

The Biological Checklist of the Kemptville Creek Drainage Basin was
launched in 1992, but never got off the ground, and survives only as
my e-mail address (part of the problem seems to have been that we
don't seem to have communicated the idea that we were founding a
public institution, rather than just giving a name to our own
activities). At one point Bob Woolham was going to launch a 'Friends
of Kemptville Creek' but this also never got started.

The Friends of the Jock River was founded in 1996, and was very active
for some time, but last year the membership failed to elect a new
executive, and voted to place the organization into dormancy and see
if it could revive this year.

I urge everyone from the Jock drainage to attend this meeting and
revive the Friends.

I wonder also if we don't need a "League of Rideau Tributaries" among
Friends organizations to mutually encourage each other.

To friends and members of the Friends of the Jock River: The Friends
of the Jock River was established in 1996 to provide leadership in
improving the health of the Jock River watershed ecosystems. Over the
past 17 years we have accomplished many activities we are proud of.
Please see our extensive list of major accomplishments in the
attachment.

Now there is a risk that all this will end. As of 2012, most of the
current board had been in place from the beginning and believed it was
time to pass on the torch. Unfortunately, the membership failed to
elect a new executive for 2012 and voted to place the organization
into dormancy with two provisional caretaker executives and a
requirement to test the waters again in 2013. You are invited to
attend the upcoming Annual General Meeting, in the upstairs meeting
room at 7:00 PM, February 21, 2013, at the Barrhaven Loblaws on
Greenbank Road (near Strandherd) when we will try again. However, this
time, if a minimum slate of key executives, namely, president,
treasurer and secretary, cannot be chosen, the organization will cease
to exist.

It already exists and is called the Rideau Roundtable. The Roundtable
has done outreach, partnered on improvement projects, organized
workshops and fora, and runs the Rideau Experience voyageur canoe
program. There is also a Friends of the Rideau which is mostly into
books, publications, and website information. There was an attempt to
amalgamate the Roundtable and the Friends, but it failed.

It could if one were to use it do so. The point is, an organization such
as you suggested already exists and it can be a vehicle to do whatever
its members, volunteers, and board wish to do.

For example, I coordinate the voyageur canoe program for the Roundtable.
We use it to introduce people, especially children, to the river and to
give us an opportunity to talk to them about natural history, the
natural environment, and how to protect it. We hire a summer student
every year and employ certified crew. It's not a project I could run on
my own.
