*Pastor's Corner: Dedicated Outreach Partnerships? *
On an Easter season Sunday between two baptisms (John and Mary Rodriguez -
children of Kristin Klevering) and two baptismal reaffirmations (Marti &
Matt Keefe) at Northside Presbyterian, we will be holding a post-Worship
congregational potluck to be faithful to the baptismal calls of us all.
The reason for the Northside April 20 potluck: to engage this church in the
process of fulfilling one of its five church goals for 2006-2009, to wit:
*Expand outreach efforts to create a greater presence for Northside within
the broader community, with a focus on efforts that connect the congregation
to organizations and demographics not typically associated with the church.
*
More specifically put: The potluck discussion, led by Northside’s More
Light & Peacemaking Team with Session's blessing, will engage us in
envisioning a dedicated outreach partnership for the church entire.
All of this is being processed with the acute awareness that the NAM Social
Action Team has been pursuing a dedicated outreach partnership for some time
- namely, the Avalon Housing domestic violence shelter in the house at the
top of our church driveway. However, Avalon - which bought the house last
year - has experienced great delays in rehabbing the house for occupancy.
Current plans are to move families in late this summer. This is roughly one
year after the original expected move-in date.
This dance between Northside's and NAM's outreach needs and desires, and the
timing of each, provide a microcosm of the challenges and opportunities we
face in a variety of ways each year as an ecumenical partnership. Right now,
the decision-making ball is in our Presbyterian court. Will we choose a
dedicated outreach partnership of our own? Or will it be the same as the
chosen NAM partnership? And - if the former - will the resources needed to
fulfill this choice not serve to detract from the latter?
Whatever shakes out on our outreach partnership choices, let us pray that
they not simply be seen as choices. Let us pray they be seen also and
especially as calls, i.e., responses to God's leading - for us as
Presbyterians as well as for us as partners in ministry since 1966.

*In the News this month:*
This is April, and we have some good news to report. Cancer is now under
control. I conclude this from the fact that the President has yet to
proclaim April Cancer Control Month. Nor have I been able to find any other
citation that April 2008 is Cancer Control Month. National Poetry Month,
<http://www.poets.org/page.php/prmID/41> National Donate Life Month,
<http://www.organdonor.gov/get_involved/donatelifemonth.htm> and Child Abuse
Prevention Month. <http://www.childabuse.org/ncap.html> But not cancer
control.
For those who prefer to concentrate on things a week at a time, April
is National
Park Week, <http://www.nps.gov/npweek/>which deals, of course, with National
Parks.
And for those who take life a day at a time, we offer these:
- April 1: April Fool
Day<http://www.southcom.com.au/%7Eseymour/aprilfool/april.htm>
- April 4: National Walk to Work day
- April 11: Eight Track Tape Day

Ed Burkes wishes to organize a group to discuss "The Talmud of Jmmanuel". If
you are interested, contact Ed at (734) 971-6030.
As you read this, Susan is in Vietnam, busy finalizing the adoption of
Thomas. For the next few weeks, Rachel Stivenson will be on call for
pastoral care.
After the 10+ inches of snow we have had, does anyone still belive that
Wasted Dailight Time should start in early March?
Stories elsewhere you might have missed (especially if you live in Ann
Arbor):
- Our own Steven Uche was at Lindbom Elementary School, in Brighton,
on February 29, as part of Black History Month. Unfortunately, the Brighton
Argus has not chosen to make the story available, but there are 26 photos of
the event available here.

Answer to Last Month's Question: What are the lyrics to the missing verse in
Margaritaville?
Answer: Old men in tank tops,
Crusin' the gift shops.
Checking out the chaquitas down by the shore
They dream about weight loss
Wish they could be their own boss
These three day vacations become such a bore.
(Yes, this verse really was cut out to fit the single onto AM radio)
Question of the Month: What is the difference between Ronald McDonald and
Donald McDonald?
Now back to the news.

*Camp Time*
The Howell Conference & Nature Center which is owned and operated by the
Presbytery of Detroit proudly announces its 2008 Summer Camp Program.
Located near Howell, the only camp owned by our Presbytery has been serving
our local churches for nearly 50 years.
2007 was a banner year, seeing a 10 year high in attendance and seeing many
lives touched through the ministry of the camp. The Howell Nature Center's
Summer Program has 5 key core values; self worth, leadership, faith,
fellowship and fun and through these values the program is structured to
provide a life changing experience for the campers.
We are very excited over the 2008 season. The camp has expanded its season
by two weeks and is offering programs for everyone between 2nd grade and
High School. For more information please contact 517-546-0249 or visit our
website at www.howellnaturecenter.org .
<http://www.howellnaturecenter.org/>You can also pick up a brochure at
church. There are also camperships
available to help underwrite the cost of camp.
