Hi All-
I thought you all might be interested to hear of the #AltCurrency
(twitter hashtag) activity in
the DC/Baltimore area. I'm cc'ing Larry Chang of Ecolocity <
yoca...@gmail.com > on this email-- I hope he joins the all-too-quiet
North American Community Currency listserv.
If folks haven't hooked up with their local Transition groups- whether
formal or budding--
let me encourage you to do so.

ALTERNATIVE CURRENCIES
>From Wikipedia: Alternative currency is a term that refers to any
currency used as an alternative to the dominant national or
multinational currency systems (usually referred to as national or fiat
money). Alternative currencies can be created by an individual,
corporation, or organization, they can be created by national, state, or
local governments, or they can arise naturally as people begin to use a
certain commodity as a currency. When used in combination with or when
designed to work in combination with national or multinational fiat
currencies they can be referred to as complementary currency. Most
complementary currencies are also local currencies and are limited to a
certain region.
Meet three local people who have founded or are coordinating the use of
a local currency:
Larry Chang, founder of the Potomacs (modeled after Berkshares)
Nick Williams, founder of the Anacostia Hours (modeled after Ithaca Hours)
Carol Yaka, volunteer with Takoma Time (modeled after Edgar Cahns Time
BankUSA)

A Transition Town is a town or city that is seeking to live more
sustainably and build local resilience, and has joined the Transition
movement. This movement was started by Permaculture designer Rob Hopkins
in England, and has expanded to become a global grassroots movement.
Each Transition Town seeks to find and implement methods for reducing
energy usage as well as increasing local self-reliance to respond to the
negative effects of Peak Oil, Climate Change and a challenged economy.
In 2010 the Baltimore Green Forum is hosting a series of talks on topics
relevant to the Transition Town movement with the goal of supporting the
development of Transition Initiatives in the Baltimore area.
