I have been contemplating custom front panels and enclosures for the
systems that I have put together for some time now. So I took a break
from coding the MSX bios, and with the help of some vague memories
from 8th grade shop class (1982) and a shiny new laser cutter I am
posting pictures of my first attempt for an acrylic laser cut
enclosure for the N8. I started with the N8 because it seemed like
the easiest form factor . . .and because that is what I am writing
code for at the present.
This is only a first attempt, I am still getting the feel of the CAD
software and the laser cutter and I am still trying to remember how to
properly (i.e. neatly) do a plastic weld joint, but I think it turned
out OK.
The plan is to expand the N8 case to hold a floppy and HDD, and then
do cases for the rest of the N8VEM systems.
If I can get the construction down, and if there is any interest from
the community, I would consider building some to sell. (Either just
the laser cut parts or a completed enclosure - not sure yet)
If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, please let me know!!

I do not have the proper stand offs yet, but the N8 board looks like should fit quite nicely. The plan is to make another box under this one that holds the drives, the top and bottom panels would attach with screws to the stand offs, but the rest of the enclosure would be "welded" together with plastic solvent.
The edges on this enclosure are actually fairly clean considering that I glued the entire thing together while holding it. I figure with a few jigs, it should be a fairly quick and simple process to assemble.

I just had a Mass Effect moment. Maybe because it's been dominating
my time recently, but also the cool futuristic design of your
enclosure, AND perhaps the "N8" logo as well. I felt I was sitting on
the Normandy.
Beautiful.

This is extremely cool. I will definitely be following your progress. You can also count me in as interested in leveraging your work any way that makes sense. If you get to the point of producing these, I would definitely consider a purchase (I have no idea what kind of cost goes into something like this).
Once you have worked out a "design", is this the kind of thing that can be produced by third-parties like PCBs are?

I do not know if there is a third party production option, but the laser cutter I have is entirely automated, so for a "limited" number of enclosures, it is no problem for me to cut the parts. The assembly is another story, but, I would expect that most members of this group could assemble it with adequate instructions -- once I get a reliable methodology for assembly.
I do not expect that cost will be too bad, I do not have the design entirely finished so I cannot say exactly, but I can guess that a "kit" of the cut acrylic and all of the stand offs will end up being around $50 plus shipping (this would be average, it could be more or less depending on the acrylic selected). I would leave it up to the builder to source the acrylic solvent to "glue" the edges together ( I got mine for a few dollars on e-bay). I could be talked into offering an assembled version, but that will add to both purchase cost and shipping cost --but I know several of the builders have much better skills than mine in this area and I would rather focus my time on development work.

That sounds great Dan. That cost estimate is certainly in my target range and I would not expect you to do any assembly. Anyway, I will just follow your progress for now. Good luck with this project!

I think I am getting pretty close to an N8 enclosure. Just a few more tweaks and it should go together quite well. (See attached)

Yes the ecb connector is open. I hope to be able to have all of the connectors accessible.

PS, the N8 PCB continues grinding away in the trace router. It is looking fairly good now.

Attached are pictures of the latest version of the acrylic N8 enclosure. I
think it is ready to go at this point, so if anyone wants one, let me know.
I am going to sell KITS of the laser cut acrylic and all of the hardware
(stand offs, screws, nuts, etc.) for $50.00 including shipping. I can
order florescent, transparent, translucent or opaque acrylic in most colors,
so please specify color. The kit will be complete EXCEPT the solvent
necessary to glue the pieces together.
Here is a really good video on how to glue acrylic together:
I start by taping the assembly together with removable scotch tape, then
gluing together, and removing the tape once dry. Example assembly pictures
and the cad drawings are in the "
<http://n8vem-sbc.pbworks.com/w/file/52623834/N8%20Case%20Construction...>
N8 Case Construction.zip" file on the WIKI in the N8 folder.
My PayPal account is: danwerne...@gmail.com, please include your shipping
address, acrylic opacity choice and color choice. I do not have all of
acrylic choices on-hand, so I will likely have to order the acrylic. This
takes 3-4 days, so please allow 5 business days for me to get the kit in
the mail.
Thanks!

I need to double check, but I think so. There is some margin in the case
design, so as long as the mounting holes in the board did not change (which
I do not think they did), it should work fine.

I took a quick look and it looks like the new N8 board will work just
fine. That being said, I do plan on ordering one of the new boards from
Andrew as soon as they are released; so perhaps the safest thing is to wait
until I get one and verify that everything fits ok before ordering.

Thanks Wayne! That's awesome! I cannot wait for the N8 PCBs to arrive. I
am definitely going to build one of these this summer.
Very nice! Thanks and have a nice day!

Hi Dan,
I have been building my N8 case in slow steps over the last week or so. As
of today, it is complete. I am thrilled with how nice this case out. I
really appreciate the work you did on this.

This is great Dan. I am definitely in. Is there a website where I could
get some idea of the color and translucency choices?
Thanks!

Example assembly pictures
and the cad drawings are in the "
<http://n8vem-sbc.pbworks.com/w/file/52623834/N8%20Case%20Construction...>
This
takes 3-4 days, so please allow 5 business days for me to get the kit in
the mail.
Thanks!

Is the ECB bus connector still accessible from outside the case?
Thanks and have a nice day!

PS, the N8 PCB continues grinding away in the trace router. It is looking
fairly good now.
