Just thought I'd point out that there's practically no way anyone will
be using HD-DVD in their next console. The format is 100% dead.
Toshiba stopped manufacturing the discs completely in 2008 and I think
that overhauling one of their factories to put the discs back into
production just so that one company could use them would be too cost

 Good point!
I wonder if they (or anyone else in a business that stands to profit from such a line of thinking) have thought of that. Though, I suppose it all depends on when they release their next system...whether or not something else piques their interest.

I don't think they intended the download stuff to be that heavily pushed, more a temptation. After all, they were trying to focus on drawing in the typically-non-gamer audience...who may also be non-internet (or at least non-broadband) folks too.

The point is that the HD-DVD tech is pretty dead, but it was fully
developed. So if Nintendo uses this format there are very little
drives out there to facilitate home pirating. They'll probably get a
nice deal from Toshiba who should be keen to recover a little coin on
their investments.
Nintendo will probably stick to a real medium for their next

I'm not sure why you would think there would need to be so may servers per game. Under the download-to-your-own-HDD method, you could definitely fit more than 10 games on a server. Even if the server had only a single HDD (which is unlikely) I'd imagine *at least* 2TB... so unless games got seriously larger and so badly coded their was no compression to the install file, I can't see why you couldn't get 100-1000 new games on a drive.

So I guess if this new shebang goes ahead, you would have to pay to play all existing games on the service again.
Not to mention the number of servers required for this... I mean, say 10 servers per game and 1000 games... that's an awful lot of servers - and that's just an example.
Whilst you would lose the whole packaging thing, you would have a huge increase an energy consumption, as those servers would be on 24/7, unlike our games consoles which are only on when we use them.

Actually, MS has ready been dipping their feet heavily into those waters...as has Nintendo! LIVE Arcade title are downloads, as are play-on-demand and XBox Originals. Nintendo has been doing not just the VC titles, but WiiWare and DSiWare.

While I too prefer having some physical thing to hold forever, that enables me to play years later...the cost to produce those formats as well as their effect on the environment in packaging as well as defunct carts or discs have been gradually swaying many companies to offer digital formats (maybe not as sole versions, but at least as alternatives)

Whilst that may be cool for some people, I hate that idea.
1) Games will never be supported "forever". Atleast with a disc-based medium I can play it whenever I want regardless of whether the company has gone under, or removed support for that game.
2) I love having my games consoles. Not only are most of them well designed, some of them are damn sexy (Japanese Sega Saturn springs to mind).

Nintendo may well adopt hd-dvd. It's dirt cheap. And they could latch on their own security algorithms just like they're doing now with the wii. It'll be cracked in the end like everything else has.

The most important thing for the next console to be a success. Is that it'll be easy to port games across platforms.

HD-DVD is even easier to crack than Blu-Ray and it still required licensing
fees.
Hell, even using HDMI requires licensing fees.
My belief is that HD-DVD is dead forever.
Tom

-------Original Message-------

To: NintendoScene
Suggests

I've been expecting new hardware for a while now. Disks will become obsolete as soon as the cloud becomes more stable,
and as more people move to broadband connections. A number of
companies are working towards this end already, Netflix, MS, On live.
I know these are technologies that have yet to be proven.
Check out this as the future.
[link]

I've been expecting new hardware for a while now. But now that sales
are structurally down it may happen. My thoughts:
Based on the last few years it will be an upgrade. In line with cube
to Wii step and the strategy with the DS!
I do hope the hardware will be on par with the PS3 & 360. That will
make the platform interesting for 3rd parties and crossplatform

That's a good point actually. They might have seen it elsewhere bought a few and sold it on to this shop for a profit.

That must be the reason. When I see that kinda thing here, it tend to be after a really good deal that non-gamers cashed in on and just made a quick turnaround for the cash.
To: "Nintendo Scene" <N-Scene@googlegroups.com>
What is going on here? Am in my local games exchange in Camden, there's a load of second hand Mario Bros Wii games up for sale (at least 30). So soon after Christmas, I hope the gamers completed the game at least before selling it on. The good news for me is that is selling for quite a bit more than what I paid for it!

 @Dave
With Blu-ray being the future of the (physical) medium , I think both
Microsoft and Nintendo will eventually end up having to use them in
their systems at some point in the future. It might not be with either
of their next set of hardware , but unless either of them decide to go
digital only , dvd won't be able to hold out for games for much
