I have found a work around for this of sorts. I am now able to send
email reminders via gmail by following the instructions here

You end up creating a proxy email service of sorts on your own
computer using a product called 'stunnel'. Setup is easy if you take
your time.
Make sure you get your computer name correct. I went into system
information and used "system name". You then put that in the MLO email
settings as the SMTP server. Works great.
