So, we need a good location.

This will be for the weekend (Saturday, Sunday), and preferably
somewhere in KL. Requirements:

1. Ample parking (preferably, free, if not at a flat rate)
2. Near public transport is a bonus
3. Good bandwidth - WiFi must not fail
4. Power to handle geeks (we can bring power boards if need be)
5. Projector
6. Tables, chairs, the usual

One room for the talk - preferably a hall.

One room for hanging out - having hackfest, code conventions, and more

Naturally, we'd like the location to be *free* (as in teh tarik), so
we don't have to go find sponsors to pay for the location. Attendance
to this event, should naturally be free - its for cultivating an
environment where sharing knowledge, is about caring for geeks.

Any suggestions?

In case anyone is wondering, the picked dates are Saturday 30 May
2009, and I don't know if this should extend to Sunday 31 May 2009.
Note that Sunday 31 May will clash with MSC-OSCON's "hackathon" day.
Some have suggested Friday 29 May 2009, but this will involve
participants taking leave from work... which may not work out (plus,
Friday is mosque day, so you tend to lose about 3 hours+ of hacking
and learning). More on this later.

So, location ideas people!

Thanks

I could venture the Integricity office which is located at
Centrepoint, Bandar Utama

Sorry, it's in PJ :)

Free on weekends.

> 2. Near public transport is a bonus

Buses stop nearby (there's a free 1Utama bus from the Kelana Jaya LRT)

> 3. Good bandwidth - WiFi must not fail

Well, we have 4mbps, courtesy of #streamyxsucks but we could share the
mobile bandwidth that others have via routers.

> 4. Power to handle geeks (we can bring power boards if need be)

It's a commercial office, so we should be able to handle it.

> 5. Projector

Yup.

> 6. Tables, chairs, the usual

Yup.

> One room for the talk - preferably a hall.

Could seat up to 40-50 I guess, it's not that HUGE...

> One room for hanging out - having hackfest, code conventions, and more

We have smaller break-out areas with beanbags, a bar area, a glass
room... :)

Free? Definitely not. Yes, a cuppa teh tarik at least.

A whole day Saturday would be better, and Sunday if needed. Fridays
would disrupt the whole office.

We probably have an extra one I can borrow as well.

Ouch. How much is a cuppa teh tarik?

Assuming people are serious about it, any place (pantry?) for some
silly activities like baking? (heh!) Free cupcakes! Or cookies! Fresh!
Yes, we'll clean up, we promise!

Just a whole day event would be best, IMHO. Release early, release
often and all that.

Hi guys,
My name is Mahen and I belong to the IBM Innovation Center, we're
located at Bandar Utama, right next to Wan U. As you might know IBM
supports Open Source initiatives and I am trying to see if we can get
hold of our training room to help you host GeekCamp. If you could
provide me with an exact date, agenda and types of activities you
intend to hold, I'll try to see how we can help you out.

> 1. Ample parking (preferably, free, if not at a flat rate)
Right next to Wan U, so you can park your cars there.
>2. Near public transport is a bonus
There are buses going to Wan U but realistically speaking, you need to
take a cab or car there.
>3. Good bandwidth - WiFi must not fail
We do have wireless access but you won't be able to access it unless
you're an IBM employee. The training room has around 35 PCs with
wired broadband access, though.
>4. Power to handle geeks (we can bring power boards if need be)
We have enough power.
>5. Projector
We do have a projector
>6. Tables, chairs, the usual
As mentioned before, we have around 35 PCs, with chairs. We even have
a vending machine which provides free drinks and water.

If you want, one of you could come over to check out the venue. I'm
generally available throughout the week so just drop me a message if
you're interested.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Mahendren Munisamy

It is safe to assume the participants will be bringing their own
laptops. I don't think IBM will allow to unplug from the PCs into the
laptops. This might not work out if that's the case.

Hi Kamal,
It's not a problem really, the issue is only with wireless.  You can always get Internet access by hooking up your laptop to one of the 35 wired connections mentioned below.

Please do let us know if you are interested and we'll proceed with the necessary arrangements.

Sincerely,
mahen

Interesting. Any problems if the laptops reshare the connection over
their wifi? Would the network ops be pissed we changed the topology
just a little bit :)?

I'm definitely interested but can't make a commitment right now. There
are a few locations we would like to check out. Thanks for your help.
You'll be the first to know if we decide to use your facilities.

I can bring in my Linksys Wireless router if necessary. No issue there.

FYI.

But better get clarification from whoever handle the network. Whether it is possible to do so.
And double check if the network is free for all or restricted access based on mac address.

Hi,
We have no issues if you wanted to hook up a wireless router.  Just FYI, I have attached the Center's flier and a the PPT slide shows some of the facilities we have.  The training room is appears in the bottom left of the PPT slide (entitled "Workshop in session at IIC").  We have roughly 30 PCs hooked up to broadband.  Please do let me know if you need any furter info:

Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestions and offers!

I've decided to hold geekcamp in the offices of Integricity. Alex
(@TheBackpackr) offered his office 5 days ago
http://twitter.com/TheBackpackr/statuses/1532417616 and I checked it
out on Monday. I posted pics of the place at the @geekcamp twitter
account. Check them out at http://twitpic.com/photos/geekcamp

I also just got hosting donated by foss.org.my so I'll get the site up
quickly to post info like the location and a Google Docs form thing to
list proposed talks and also take in suggested talks.

Under construction.

Probably not much of a help if you arrive by bus but:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Puduraya+Bus+Station&daddr=Lebuh+Bandar+Utama,+Bandar+Utama,+Petaling+Jaya,+Selangor,+Malaysia+(Secret+Recipe+Centrepoint+Bandar+Utama)&hl=en&geocode=CRlzD0dr7w2-Far_LwAdctQPBiGcDX8gLT0LHA%3BFfLjLwAd63IOBiEbMP-OD5mXxg&mra=pe&mrcr=0&sll=3.142106,101.659976&sspn=0.103528,0.169601&ie=UTF8&ll=3.140002,101.653919&spn=0.103528,0.169601&z=13

Taxi would be the easiest and least painful. But if you're early and
want to hitch a ride, I'd be driving to it from near Cempaka LRT
station (reachable via the LRT next to puduraya). Email me your
contact (phone number) later if you're interested. Not going to pick
anyone up from Puduraya, sorry, that place has heavy traffic.
