I am glad to announce new My Life Organized application named OneAlert
- advanced reminder system with simple calendar. GTD speaking
OneAlert is a manager of actions which require less then 2 minutes of
your time and need to be done at a specific time: "Call Katrin in 10
min", "Remind Jim about report tomorrow at 3pm" etc. You usually
do not track such activities in your advanced task management system.
You should not spend much time to manage these actions so we tried to
design OneAlert extremely easy to use and powerful in the same time.

Here is the three-step scenario of adding new reminder to OneAlert:
1. While working in any application press OneAlert hotkey (Win+Down by
default)
2. Type in OneAlert console: "Call Katrin in 10 min" and press
Ctrl+Enter
3. Press OneAlert hotkey again to return to application you worked
with.

If you want to customize your reminder press Enter instead of Ctr+Enter
in step 3 and add additional parameters for your reminder (note,
recurrence, alert actions etc). There are also some useful features
like days calculator, custom colors for days etc.

The look and feel of OneAlert is similar to Google gadgets. Some
screenshots:
http://www.mylifeorganized.net/downloads/files/beta/OneAlertSsh/OneAlertCalendar.gif

http://www.mylifeorganized.net/downloads/files/beta/OneAlertSsh/OneAlertAdvancedSetup.gif
http://www.mylifeorganized.net/downloads/files/beta/OneAlertSsh/OneAlertRecurrence.gif

Some notes for MLO users
1) In OneAlert "Manage Reminders" window you can see new advanced
tree view control. It has columns, icons, multi-select etc. Now I have
needed experience to include this control to MLO. Coming soon.
2) Look at OneAlert "Reminder Recurrence" dialog in "Hourly"
section. You can see new options for recurrent reminders there: Random
range and Consider open closed hours. Using these new settings you can
create new advanced recurrence patterns for OneAlert reminders.
3) The new Licensing system has been designed for OneAlert which will
be used in MLO soon to simplify using it on different computers, USB
drives etc.
So as you can see it is a symbiosis of two products: much code from MLO
used in OneAlert and some code and experience from OneAlert will be
used in MLO soon.

OneAlert is still in beta stage - looking forward to receiving your
feedback.

The link:
http://www.mylifeorganized.net/downloads/files/beta/OneAlert.zip

And lastly OneAlert is FREE for those who purchased MLO-Professional.
Just enter your MLO registration e-mail in OneAlert Registration dialog
to receive your Activation Code and enjoy :)
Others could use OneAlert FREE for as long as they want if only ten
reminders stored in the same time. To remove this limitation
registration is required.

Look like a useful application.

My gut, initial, reaction is with regards to setting the reminders in
the Advanced Options. If I have something todo at 22:00 then I may want
to be reminded at 21:30, then snooze it a few times before I start on
the task. With this just being a reminder as such, I can not see a way
to set a reminder for 22:00 but have it remind me 15 mins, 5 mins
before etc. If I want to do that I have to set the reminder for 21:45
etc. I am probably think of it more like appointments, but it does feel
a little odd.
Great for adding quick reminders, but I am so use to setting alarms
for 15 mins before etc, in other apps. It feels strange having to think
when do I actually want to be reminded? If that makes any sense.

So that is just my gut reaction. I will play around with it some more
and let you know if I have any further comments.

I do have a question though, will this eventually fully integrate with
MLO at all? In other words it would be dandy if you could just run
OneAlert and it checked your MLO file for any reminders etc, even when
MLO wasn't running.

Regards

Steve

Hi Andrey!

I just downloaded and registered my copy of OneAlert. The first thought I
have on this product is it's availability for the Pocket PC. I would feel
uncomfortable having reminders on my desktop that are not available to me
when I am out-and-about with my Pocket PC.

One of the basic tenets of the GTD methodology is to have a trusted system.
With MLO, I have a trusted system with full synchronization between my
desktop computer and my Pocket PC. I would have to have something similar
with OneAlert so I could trust that OneAlert would give me my reminders no
matter where I might be.

Ron, presently there are NO alerts in MLO on the PPC - correct/.

(At least I canlt find them!) So this is already somewhat of an issue,
as my MLO alerts on the PC do not sync to my PPC.

I like this as a quick reminder programm! What would be nice for GTD
beginners like me is some quick and simple 2-Minutes-Count-Down-Timer
within OneAlert (to learn a bit better what can be done in this short
amount of time).

I second the request for a Coutdown Timer, although if would be better if you could set any duration.

You are correct there are no reminders/alerts in the PPC version of MLO at present. Although I do understand it is in  development at the moment.

Hi Andrey,

This looks great, saves me cluttering up the main MLO application. I'm
still in the early stages of MLO, but found myself overwhelmed by the
big GTD template with all its own recurring reminders.

Andrey,

Maybe I did something wrong, butI cannot fiure out what!

When I installed OneAlert, I clicked on the "Resend Activation" button
to get my activation key. Just being lazy, I guess. And it was promptly
sent to my email address. And then again, and again, and again... You
get teh picture by now.

My activation key has been sent to me 10 times in the last 20 hours. I
cannot seem to correlate it to any particular action.

How do I break this daisy chain?

Thanks.

When you press the Resend Activation link OneAlert just opens your
browser with URL. DId you close the browser after this? If for example
you click refresh button in browser the code will be sent again. Let me
know on support email what you did.

Thanks,
Andrey.

Yes, but Firefox keeps the session available for the next time I open
the browser. However I have now received about a dozen activation
emails and I hadn't opened and closed Firefox that many times.

Plus, I was receiving no indication that it is sending a request each
time. Does it do this silently?

OneAlert does not use cookie. OneAlert does not have any Internet
connection functionality integrated. All what it does is sending an URL
to defalult browser of your computer so that *browser* opens it. It is
just like if you type this URL yourself.

Hi Andrey.

I replied to your email, but I thought I would post this here also for
other users' general knowledge. Since I use Firefox and it is set to
save all open tabs from the previous session and reopen them each time
I open the browser, I think that is most likely why the MLO site kept
thinking I was requesting the key. Though it doesn't seem like I had
closed and reopened Firefox as many times as I received the e-mails, I
would imagine it is somehow related to Firefox's Session Saver feature.

Since this is now a standard feature in the latest version of Firefox,
it is likely that you will see this behavior occur more often in the
future by having the activation key e-mail auto-triggered by opening
that web page. Perhaps you can add a second action: have another web
page - maybe a "Thank You" page - auto-open immediately after the
activation email action is triggered. Then if Firefox's Session Saver
keeps reloading that page with each browser session, only the Thank You
page will reopen each time. Just a thought, anyway.

Thanks for all your help, Andrey.

Hi Kevin,

Reminders is the essential feature of OneAlert and it is implemened. If
you are talking about MyLifeOrganized then reminders are also
implemented on desktop side and will be released for PPC soon.

>From help for OneAlert:
There are several methods to create new reminder in OneAlert
application.

How to create new reminder using Down Arrow menu
1. Click Down Arrow menu
2. Select Add Reminder... command
3. Setup reminder parameters in New Reminder dialog and click OK.

How to create new reminder using Parsing Console
1. Activate OneAlert application
2. Type reminder information in Parsing Console (more details on
parsing)
3. Press Enter key to open New Reminder dialog
4. Setup additional reminder parameters in New Reminder dialog and
click OK.

Tip: If you type reminder information in the Parsing Console and press
Ctrl+Enter the New Reminder setup dialog will be skipped and reminder
will be created with default Alert settings.

Double click on selected day in calendar to create reminder
1. Select needed month
2. Double click on a day
3. Setup reminder parameters in New Reminder dialog and click OK.

Note: The days with reminders are displayed in bold on the calendar.

I am finding OneAlert really quick and useful. Thanks.

I have a question about the bar that pops up 10 minutes before the
reminder -- is there any way to stop this happening? It wouldn't be so
bad if it was easy to dismiss, but it involves clicking to show the
menu and then clicking Hide. I would rather it didn't show at all --
perhaps it could be a per reminder option?

Also, the keyboard shortcut doesn't work sometimes. It opens the window
(I'm using Ctrl+N) but it usually won't close it again, though it does
sometimes. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Many thanks,
Martyn

There are several options:
1) right click on OneAlert caption and click dismiss or snooze
2) Or you can click on OneAlert caption (or hit a hotkey) and press
Esc. The first Esc collapsed OneAlert the second hides it.

>I would rather it didn't show at all --

It is designed as "pre-reminder "without much destruction but still
attracting your attention. I will think to create it optional.

>Also, the keyboard shortcut doesn't work sometimes. It opens the window

1) On the second hit of a hotkey OneAlert should return to a window
which was active when you hit the hotkey first time.
2) OneAlert will be closed on second hit of hotkey if it was closed
when you activated it . I.e. second hit returns OneAlert to a status as
it was before activating it by hotkey.

I have been using one alert for a few days. I notice that sometimes the
console disappears and there is no way to get it to come back unless
you exit the program and start it up again.
Otherwise, it looks great.

Hi,

I've started using OneAlert, and I've noticed it uses the same naive
form of parsing that MLO uses. Pretty please with a cherry on top,
use a clearly defined grammar rather than word matching. It's
extremely limiting having to think about what I'm typing in order to
phrase it just so. Moreover, it's a complete pain in the neck if I
want to use an actual number in the message.

One other problem I'm having is that periodically the hotkey won't
make OneAlert hide. The current application's caption bar goes in and
out of focus, but OneAlert still stays resident in the foreground.

Following this up, the problem occurs whenever I change away from the
app that was active when pressing the hotkey. This includes clicking
any of the menu items in OneAlert itself.

Example workflow:

1) I'm in Word and think of something.
2) Press hotkey, OneAlert comes forward.
3a) I click a menu item in OneAlert.
3b) I decide I need to check something online quickly and switch to my
Web browser.
4) Press hotkey again, OneAlert does nothing.
5) Go back to Word, press hotkey again, OneAlert does nothing.

Yay, I must be racking up a high score with posts :-)

As another suggestion, please make "Enter" the default and
"Ctrl+Enter" the special one. In normal use, people are likely to use
the default, so it should probably be the easier key combination.

No, I wasn't. I think the shortcut Ctr+~ could be the actual reason. If
you press it (accidentially) while the OneAlert window is collapsed,
and then expand the collapsed window back, there is no sign left of
the "console<<" button.

Thank you, Andrey!

I don't think so, because I have the same problem: sometimes parsing
console disappears.
I mean, that there is no console, no link "console >>". Absolutely
empty space below calendar.

I am still getting some very weird behaviour from OneAlert.

When I press the shortcut keys I get the calendar, but the console is
missing and there is no way to find it. Launching from the tray icon
has the same result. The only way to see the console again is to Exit
the program and restart.

When I put "... 100 mins" into the console, it interpreted it as 3048
days.

I would also like an option to not have the title bar appear 10 mins
before the alarm -- it is very distracting, and it takes 2 clicks to
get rid of it.

I think this will be a very useful program when it works properly.

Thanks,
Martyn
