The second annual UCM New Music Festival will be held April 10-11, 2010 at the University of Central Missouri. We invite scholars to submit papers or proposals for panel sessions on topics related to music since 1945 to be considered for presentation at the conference. All composers may submit scores to be considered for performance on the festival. Submissions from composers who can supply their own performers are encouraged. Electronic, electroacoustic, acousmatic, and multimedia works are also strongly encouraged (maximum 8.1 format + optional video; see website for list of available technology).
Call for Papers:
This year marks the second annual new music festival at the University of Central Missouri. In keeping with this anniversary, we have organized the festival around the theme of "dualities."
Many binary issues are well-researched in musicological study, from bipartite form to the bit-by-bit nature of digital audio, but the concept of "two-ness" still gives rise to a number of fruitful lines of inquiry. Various dichotomies (e.g. new/old, good/bad, complex/simple) present paths into understandings of music, as well as providing the bases for any number of compositions. Relationships between composers, performers, and audiences are also deeply shaped by dualities. The tensions arising from the self/other dichotomy are inherent in any collaborative team and in some cases can form the foundation for the team's success. Papers on any topic relating to music since 1945 are welcome, but we particularly invite scholars to consider issues relating to dualities in music.
The submission deadline (postmark) for proposals is December 4, 2009. We prefer to receive these proposals via email to Eric Honour in PDF, MS Word, or RTF format. Presenters will be notified by January 31, 2010.
Proposals should include an abstract (ca. 500 words) addressing the general subject, originality, methodology, and conclusions, and may also include supporting documentation as needed. Please specify any audio-visual equipment needed for the session. The maximum time limit for individual papers will be 20 minutes; paper presentations will be limited to 30 minutes total, including time for questions.
