We use music to situate and define ourselves in time and space, as well as to articulate geographic, social, and cultural identities. The relationship between music and space encompasses such wide-ranging topics as the architecture of performance spaces, acoustics, societal and geographic locations, musical communities, and contested spaces, both social and political. Music functions in the temporal world not only through performance but also within memory, as well as its use in film, dance, and other visual media. Music is also perhaps uniquely capable of demonstrating the various ways that space, place, and time inform and constitute one another. As a performed art, music helps us to both define and challenge the limits of existing spatial and temporal borders.

With this framework in mind, Echo: a music-centered journal is pleased to announce its third annual conference, "Space, Time, and Music", to be held at UCLA on May 30-31, 2008. Scholars from all areas of music research are invited to submit proposals for papers on this theme; proposals for pre-arranged panels are also welcome. Papers will each be twenty minutes long (around 2400 words) followed by ten minutes for discussion.

Individual presenters should submit an abstract of 300 words or less, and should also include: 1) the paper title; 2) the author's name and a brief biography (50-100 words); 3) institutional affiliation and contact information; 4) audio-visual requirements. Panel chairs should include all of the above for each member of the panel, as well as a separate, more general description of the panel's overall theme (200-250 words). Submissions are due March 17th and may be sent electronically to echoconf at ucla.edu (please put "Echo Conference Submission" in the subject line). Alternately, print submissions may be sent to:
