Hi,

It seems the class MusicalWork is sort of isolated. It has no direct
connection with the class Agent (MusicalArtist) we found only two
meaningful relations:
mo:performed_in (domain= mo:score/ mo:MusicalWork, range=
mo:Performance)
mo:composed_in (domain= MusicalWork, range= mo:Composition)

in comments of the class mo:MusicalManifestation says:

Work #1 J. S. Bach's Six suites for unaccompanied cello

* Expression #1 sound issued during the performance by Janos
Starker recorded in 1963 and 1965
o Manifestation #1 recordings released on 33 1/3 rpm sound
discs in 1965 by Mercury
o Manifestation #2 recordings re-released on compact disc in
1991 by Mercury
* Expression #2 sound issued during the performances by Yo-Yo Ma
recorded in 1983
o Manifestation #1 recordings released on 33 1/3 rpm sound
discs in 1983 by CBS Records
o Manifestation #2 recordings re-released on compact disc in
1992 by CBS Records

which indicates that a work can have multiple expressions and every
expression can have multiple manifestations which makes sense. To get
to manifestation from musicalWork we should follow the path
MusicalWork->Performance->Agent->Manifestation. Is there any other way
to get to Manifestation from MusicalWork?

The other question is how we can represent a MusicalExpression of a
MusicalWork.

Cheers!

Hello!

It depends what type of expression you want to tackle. If you just
want a direct relationship between Work and Expression, it is in FRBR:
http://vocab.org/frbr/core#term-realization

If you want to describe a performance, the simplest workflow I can think of is:

MusicalWork --performed_in--> Performance --recorded_as--> Signal
(expression) ----published_as---> Record (manifestation)

(See the diagram in the MO specification)

Cheers!

Hello,

As a newcomer to the Music Ontology, I would say that the diagram in
the specification could have included "MusicalExpression" and
"MusicalManifestation"
(or perhaps a second diagram, recalling the FRBR model)....

True, it would be great to add something to the diagram relating its
parts to related FRBR concepts.

Fred, could you do that, or send the source of the diagram over?

Cheers!

Sure :)

Firstly I have to find the file; and then I will do this.

Expect it sometimes tomorrow since my current day is already loaded.

Take care,

Hi,

What do you mean by "source of the diagram"?
Was it generated automatically? With which tool?

Víctor

Oh, I was just meaning the omnigraffle source (there is only a bitmap
on the specification page)

Cheers!

After looking at it, I am not too sure if we would benefit from adding
them in this schema. The thing is that if we start adding parent classes
in there, where will we stop? I would personally try to keep it as
simple as possible.

Anyway, I joint the SVG (I would suggest to use inkscape to work with
it) file that I exported from the Visio file (expect some glitches
introduced from the export).

So play with it and share ideas :)

Thanks,

Take care,

Fred
