DELTA 5 - MIND
YOUR OWN BUSINESS Delta 5 were part
of the thriving Leeds post-punk scene in the late 1970s. This 7"
features the band's debut single, "Mind Your Own Business", first
released in 1979, backed with a remix by post-punk hero Peter Hook,
best known as the bass player for Joy Division and New Order, under
the name Man Ray. Originally released in 1979 on Rough Trade and

MONKS - PRETTY
SUZANNE 1967 UNRELEASED
heavy FUZZ Version from mega rare one-sided acetate). This is the
one to change the history books. So far we were lead to believe that
the Monks, after their LP failed to chart, tuned it down and tried a
couple more pop tunes before vanishing in oblivion. The truth is far
from that: bound by their contract with Polydor, the Monks were
unable to develope their music the way they really wanted to. In
1967 the Monks went on their own time and money into Tonstudio Pfanz
near Hamburg to record this smashing fuzz driven freak beat version
of Pretty Suzanne behind Polydor's back!! Trying to fuck over
Germany's biggest record label???? It doesn't get more punk than
that in my book!!! Sure enough they got in trouble for it and this
killer version remained unreleased to this day. First ever legit
reissue in full cooperation with the Monks. Mastered from the
original (only known!!) acetate. In amazing high fidelity fuzz
sound!!! |

MUTE |
NORMAL - WARM
LEATHERETTE Reissue of the
very first release on Mute. Although Daniel Miller founded Mute with
the intention of releasing his own music, he only released one 7"
vinyl single of his project The Normal. The Normal were born in 1978
when Daniel Miller, inspired by the attitude of punk, and the music
of people like Can, Neu, Kraftwerk etc. bought a KORG700S and a four
track recorder and set up Mute to release the resultant single
called 'T.V.O.D.' backed with 'Warm Leatherette' which investigated
the erotic possibilities of a car crash. Before punk it would have
been inconceivable for someone of Miller's self confessed musical
limitations to release such a record. Over a quarter of a century
later the first release on Mute records is still as original and
groundbreaking as ever. |

A medio

BEAT BOYS - BEAT
BOYS
Along with Os
Mutantes, the Beat Boys represented the most radical element in
Brazilian rock: their name, clothes, hair-and intense fuzz guitar
raves-were all fierce indicators of a rebel spirit, and this in a
dangerous time for such self-expression. Here is the simple truth:
The Beat Boys were at the very epicenter of the cultural revolution
that convulsed Brazil during the late 1960s, that movement of
rupture, that bringing together of electricity and avant-garde
erudition that has come to be known as Tropicalia. They backed
Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil for their defining moments as
artists-both live, and in the studio on tracks which became the
opening Tropicalist salvo (a rare EP). So, what were this group of
Argentine rock musicians doing in the forefront of all things
outrageous in Brazil? More to the point, why is it that very few
people, even among the Brazilian music cognoscenti, have ever heard
of them? One explanation must be the fact that the band were
essentially outsiders to the Brazilian music scene. As unlikely as
it was for them to penetrate the inner circles of Brazilian elite
musicians (it was unlikely), it was even more unlikely that they
would remain there once their closest friends, Caetano Veloso and
Gilberto Gil, were exiled from Brazil. This disc includes the Beat
Boys entire output under their own name: their sole album-an
exercise in what one might call "controlled Tropicalia", laden with
torrid psychedelic moments (released by RCA Victor in 1968), as well
as a rare singles track from the same year. |

BYRD, DONALD -
SLOW DRAG Beautiful stuff
-- and one of the best Donald Byrd albums of the 60s! The album is a
killer all the way through -- recorded with a group that Byrd
maintained for 2 years, one that featured Sonny Red on alto sax,
Cedar Walton on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Billy Higgins on
drums -- all of whom come together magnificently in a razor-sharp
formation, mixing hardbop and soul jazz with an edge that you'll
hardly find on any of Byrd's other albums from the time. A lot of
the credit is due to Sonny Red -- who plays with a raspy tone that's
odd for the alto, and which really draws out Byrd's solo skills.
Walton's got a heavy left-handed approach that really hits some
great grooves -- and the team of Booker and Higgins leap lyrically,
yet also throw just the right amount of funk into the rhythms.
Includes the Blue Break classic "Jelly Roll", the amazing jazz
dancer "Book's Bossa", and the sublime "Slow Drag", one of the
strangest groovers you'll ever hear! |

CANDIDO -
BEAUTIFUL straighter Latin
jazz mode of earlier years -- working with a funky lineup of players
arranged by the mad genius Joe Cain, and going for a mixed
electric/acoustic sound that reminds us of Mongo Santamaria's best
work -- only a heck of a lot funkier! In addition to killer conga
licks from Candi, the album features some really heavy guitar and
organ lines, plus some good choppy sax work -- wailing away with a
really solid soulful sound. Imagine Booker T & The MGs working
in Spanish Harlem -- and you've got part of the picture of this one!
Titles include "I'm On My Way", "Tic Tac Toe", "Serenade To A

CHEYENNE'S COMIN'
- CHEYENNE'S COMIN' An obscure group
put together by Gene Russell -- and featuring Native American
vocalist Cheyenne Fowler. The best cuts on the record have a jazz
funk approach to soul -- with funky keyboard grooving, wah-wah
guitar, and tasty horn flourishes over the top. Cheyenne's not the
greatest vocalist in the world technically, but she's got a strong
and proud style that really carries the record -- and reinforces the
"bad Indian" motif in which she's portrayed. Titles include "I Don't

"It Ain't All About That", "Come Back To Me", "I Love You But I

DORHAM, KENNY -
TROMPETA TOCCATA A wonderfully
free-thinking set by Kenny Dorham -- and a record that really breaks
from his earlier work! The album's not exactly experimental, but it
features longer tracks with a looser approach than some of Dorham's
sweeter shorter work -- more in a rhythmically progressive mode that
lets the soloists carve out their own space in the set. Joe
Henderson joins Kenny on the frontline, and the rest of the group
includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Albert
Heath on drums. All titles are originals, with some great modernist
inflections, especially in the changes -- and titles include "The

DYLAN, BOB - SELF
PORTRAIT 2XLP One of the most
controversial albums in Bob Dylans remarkable catalog, the 1970
double-LP Self Portrait continues to exercise a considerable
fascination amongst Dylan devotees. Released on the heels of the
artists game-changing Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait offered a
quirky assortment of studio and live tracks, encompassing Dylan
originals as well as covers of familiar pop and folk numbers,
recorded with an all-star musical cast. At the time of its original
release, the sprawling, unconventional Self Portrait generated an
immense amount of discussion and disagreement amongst Dylans
admirers. The ongoing controversy surrounding the album has been
fueled over the years by Dylan himself. At various times, Dylan has
defended Self Portrait as a heartfelt artistic statement, dismissed
it as a joke and described it as a concerted effort to escape the
pressures of his unwanted status as the voice of a generation.
Whatever the artists actual intentions, Self Portrait retains a
unique niche in the hearts of Dylan devotees, and is often cited as
an early landmark in the birth of alternative country. Self
Portraits highlights include the Dylan originals "Wigwam," later
featured in the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums; "Living the
Blues," subsequently covered by artists ranging from Leon Redbone to
Antony Hegarty; and "The Mighty Quinn (Quinn the Eskimo)," which
Manfred Mann had turned into a British Invasion hit in 1968. The
latter song is one of a quartet of live tracks drawn from Dylans
legendary performance with The Band at the historic Isle of Wight
festival, along with memorable versions of the Dylan standards "Like
a Rolling Stone," "Minstrel Boy" and "She Belongs to Me." Also
featured are Dylans readings of a variety of outside material,
ranging from his iconic interpretation of the rural folk song
"Copper Kettle" to his distinctive takes on such familiar tunes as
Paul Simons "The Boxer," Gordon Lightfoots "Early Mornin Rain" and
the vintage Everly Brothers hits "Let It Be Me" and "Take a Message
to Mary." Sundazed has restored this one-of-a-kind release to its
original double-LP format. Mastered from the original analog master
tapes, the album is pressed on high-quality, high-definition vinyl,
with meticulously reproduced original gatefold cover art.

FRANKLIN, ARETHA
- SPARKLE (C.MAYFIELD PROD) A classic 70s
soul soundtrack -- and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield
wrote the soundtrack and produced the album -- and the result is a
killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals
with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty
well at this point, but the album really gave her a push -- and the
super-hip setting let her record some of her best work of the 70s.
If you own only one Aretha Franklin album from the 70s, it should
probably be this one -- as the mixture of soul, funk, and soundtrack
grooves is great, and a refreshing change from some of the cliches
that could show up on other records. Features the sublime "Something

FUNKADELIC -
STANDING ON THE VERGE (2XLP) This year is the
40th Anniversary of Funkadelic's first release and we are proud to
celebrate that landmark with the very first Funkadelic Best Of
compilation to cover both their Westbound and Warner Brothers years.
Over a period of 12 years from their Westbound debut album to the
release of 1981's The Electric Spanking Of War Babies, Funkadelic,
piloted by George Clinton, redefined the way that black music was
recorded and presented. They scored 20 R&B chart hit singles and
a dozen chart albums, but their influence was far greater. They
brought rock music into the black music charts and demanded to be
treated like a rock band and in the years following their demise
they have become treated as musical greats, by the sampling hip hop
hordes and by the rock music establishment. Standing On The Verge
includes the two number one R&B singles One Nation Under A
Groove and (Not Just) Knee Deep, sample favourites such as I'll Bet
You and Undisco Kidd and dancefloor monsters such as Cosmic Slop and
Better By The Pound. We have also taken the time to shine a light on
more contemplative masterpieces such as Sexy Ways, the wonderful
instrumental A Joyful Process, and the incredible ten minute-plus
epic Maggot Brain. Their early 1969 single Whatever Makes My Baby
Feels Good is included - the first time it has ever been reissued.

MODE FOR JOE Classic early
work by Joe Henderson -- very well titled with the use of "mode",
given the new sound and new direction Henderson was taking his tenor

lineup that includes Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, and
Bobby Hutcherson -- the last of whom really brings in some
tremendous moments to the record, using vibes to create a slightly
off-kilter feel that pushes the set from straight hardbop into the
modern realm with traces of "new thing" tones and colors. Joe's
solos are incredible -- searing, searching, yet still pulsing with

players -- like Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, and Tony Williams --
standing out with Hill as some of the most adventurous players for
the label at the time! The album's awash with jagged piano likes
from Hill -- supported by a modernist 3 horn frontline of Henderson,
Dolphy, and Kenny Dorham -- skittishly working their way into
territory that's never truly free, but wonderfully expressive and
exploratory -- a clear summation of the sense of "modern" in modern
jazz! The set features 5 excellent Andrew Hill compositions,

awaited new album from Brighton's finest. This English top ska act
play music since a long time. Beyond the first impression the
listener will realize/discover subtle and clever instrumental parts
e.g. unusual keyboard tunes and very thoughtful, melancholic
humorous undertones. |

MANN, HERBIE -
PUSH PUSH One of Herbie
Mann's biggest albums -- and one of his funkiest too! The cover's a
bit of an off-putter -- although it probably helped sell the record,
back in the day -- but the grooves are as rock-solid as anything
that Herbie cut at the time -- tight, focused, and a perfect
showcase for his soulful work on flute! Tracks have a groove that's
somewhat relaxed -- almost a shift from the soul jazz vibe of Mann's
earlier Atlantic work into some of the freer modes that were showing
up in the CTI generation -- and the players on the date include both
Duane Allman and Cornell Dupree on guitars, Richard Tee on
keyboards, Chuck Rainey on bass, Ralph MacDonald on percussion, and
Bernard Purdie on drums -- a player whose work here is definitely a
key part of the sound! |

MC5 - SHAKIN'
STREET
1960s California
had the hippies, Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin, while Detroit had
the White Panthers, the Stooges and the MC5. From the band that
paved the road for punk rock comes this 25-song collection of demos,
outtakes and live performances traces the band from its beginnings
in 1965 up to their last recordings in 1971. This material has all
been released before, but never have all of these rarities been
offered together on vinyl. Including some gems like an uncensored
"Kick Out The Jams", the rare A-Square single of "Looking At You",
the High Time outtake "Gotta Keep Moving", "Sister Anne" recorded in
2003 with Lemmy from Motorhead, and much more. Bonus CD
contains the 18 studio tracks only. |

MCLEAN, JACKIE -
A FICKLE SONANCE Stunning! This is
one of Jackie's best-ever albums, and it's a haunting mix of hard
bop and some of the more modernist tendencies that would inform his
"new thing" period. Butch Warren plays bass, and he drives the set
with an intensity that reminds us of Mingus -- and which fits
perfectly with Jackie's writing, which is influenced here clearly by
the time he spent with Mingus. The title cut is one of the best
tracks you'll ever hear on Blue Note, and both Jackie and Tommy
Turrentine play fantastic solos all the way through. Sonny Clark's
on piano, compin' hard and loud, and the whole LP rolls along with a
fantastic sense of urgency that you don't always hear on Blue Note.
Other titles
include "Enitnerrut", "Lost", and "Sundu". |

MICRAGIRLS - WILD
GIRL WALK THE MICRAGIRLS,
the marvellous drum-organ-guitar-trio, did the 'Wild Girl Walk' at
the Altai Studio, Helsinki (with noisepunknig Pentti Dassum on the
mix and 22PP's Asko on the coffee machine). If you like your sound
wild and raw, primitive and ramshackle, blaring out of tiny
micra-car speakers, all windows rolled down for fresh northern wind
in the face, then this is for you. Risu keeps good beats rolling on
and on, jumps and stomps even if the skins are ripped apart. Kata's
organ keeps flying loops through the garage not puzzled when her old
Rocket smells funny and burned while Mari's guitar trashes and cuts
it's way , sharp like a cutlass in the jungle, through the orgiastic
happening of yells and screams. And in the turmoil of speedy noise
once in a while you will be wrapped up for a recovery in the silky
backdrop of darker moments, sweet and twanging micra-ballads. The
only cover in the 12 song collection, "Funnel Of Love" (originally
by Wanda Jackson), gives a hint from which era the 3 Ladies from
Kuopio once draw their influences from. Sure, their own stuff is
still running on 60s fuel, but is so much now and their own. Heavy
Trash friend Jon Spencer from NY together with Matt Verta-Ray joined
for "Out Of Tune" vocals. Well,... what can we say..."Girls go
Crazy". They even dare to do an "Electric Chair Twist". Disturbing?
Micragirls turned on the switch. Really cool, no - really hot Bone

MITCHELL, BLUE -
THE THING TO DO The thing to do
-- is jam! Blue's sounding wonderful in this classic set for Blue
Note -- one of his best small group albums -- recorded with a sound
that's solidly in keeping with his lyrically melodic work in the
Horace Silver group! The quintet features Chick Corea on piano --
sounding incredibly subtle, and making us wish he'd recorded more
sides like this -- plus Junior Cook on tenor, nicely matching Blue
as he did on so many albums from the time -- and bass by Gene Taylor
and drums by Al Foster. Titles include the hit soul jazzer "Fungii
Mama", plus more introspective numbers like "Mona's Mood", "Chick's
Tune", "Step Lightly", and "The Thing To Do". |

MOBLEY, HANK - A
SLICE OF THE TOP A lost session by
Hank Mobley -- originally recorded in 1966, but not officially
issued until 1979, and then only briefly until another short issue
in the mid 90s. The record has Mobley reaching out into a new bag,
hitting a more soulfully arranged sound than on some of his other
straighter Blue Notes. Duke Pearson arranged the group, and it's
slightly larger than usual -- with James Spaulding on alto, Lee
Morgan on trumpet, McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass,
Billy Higgins on drums, and Kiane Zawadi and Howard Johnson
providing a very unique tuba/euphonium bass part. Titles include
"Hank's Other Bag", "Touch Of Blue", and "A Slice Of The Top".

MORGAN, LEE - THE
COOKER
A very
appropriate title for a very cooking little album -- one of Lee
Morgan's first efforts as a leader, cut back during his first years
of late 50s fame! The style here is a bit less Morgan-esque than
some of Lee's later 60s classics -- but the record is rock-solid
throughout, and proof that Morgan was every bit as great a leader in
a hardbop session as Hank Mobley or some of the other emerging
heavyweights at Blue Note! The strength of the group really helps
keep the fire stoked on the set -- and Bobby Timmons turns in some
amazing piano work alongside a lineup that includes Pepper Adams on
baritone sax, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums.
The Adams presence gives the record a bit of the feel of some of
Pepper's sessions with Donald Byrd -- but the sparkling, soaring
sound of Morgan makes the record way more than just a copycat set.
Titles include "New-Ma", "Night In Tunisia", "Lover Man", "Just One
Of Those Things", and "Heavy Dipper". |

MORGION - AMONG
MAJESTIC RUIN To those who
don't know, Morgion play strongly death metal-influenced doom.
Guttural vocals and up-tempo sections occasionally come into play
during the epic compositions, but for the most part, this is a fine
doom metal offering, combining extremely heavy riffing at times with
slow, majestic, keyboard-laden atmospheric flourishes. Hauntingly
beautiful while still being massively heavy. Morgion weave out five
anguished offerings on this album, every one of them an amazement in
itself, each one sorrowfully adept at proving that Morgion are an
awesome band and deserve more recognition than they currently
garner. Includes a bonus track from a 1995 demo that is quality.

band backing Chrissy Tembo on his now well-known "My ancestors"
album. They released this one in 1977, and you'll be amazed when you
hear it if you're somehow into Hendrix, Black Sabbath, heavy
psychedelia or Afro psych-rock. Most of the tracks on the LP follow
that direction, and the rest enter the Afrobeat sound..but most of
it is fuzzy, heavy psych-rock as you can expect. This release has a
surprising high quality sound and is limited to 600 copies only. One

NIRVANA - BLEACH:
DELUXE EDITION 2XLP Seattle, WA -
Marking the 20th Anniversary of NIRVANA's debut album, Sub Pop will
re-issue the Platinum Certified classic "Bleach". This expanded
CD/double-LP will include a never-before-released live performance,
special packaging and the first run of the double-LP will be on 180g
white vinyl (the first run of the original LP was also on white
vinyl). Originally recorded over three sessions with producer Jack
Endino at Seattle's Reciprocal Recording Studios in December 1988
and January 1989, "Bleach" was released in June of '89 and remains
unequivocally/unsurprisingly Sub Pop's very favorite NIRVANA
full-length. The album initially sold 40,000 copies, but was brought
into the international spotlight following the release and worldwide
success of their 1991sophomore effort, "Nevermind". Subsequently
"Bleach" went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the US alone,
according to Nielsen SoundScan. This 20th Anniversary Edition has
been re-mastered from the original tapes at Sterling Sound in a
session overseen by producer Jack Endino. This edition will include
an unreleased live recording of a complete February 9th, 1990 show
at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. The show features
performances of "Love Buzz," "About a Girl" and a cover of The
Vaselines' song "Molly's Lips" and has been re-mixed from the
original tapes by Endino (complete track listing below). A 16-page
LP booklet which includes candid photos of the band not previously
released to the public will also be included in this deluxe edition.

POUYA, MEHR -
AFRICAN JUMBO Abbass Mehrpouya
was one of Iran's top sitarists before passing in 1993. Having
released a series of 7" singles that range from psychedelic, pop and
even heavy funk, collectors are pushing one another aside in an
attempt to obtain his legendary work. While his psychedelic guitars
and flutes have collectors drooling at the mouth, his heavy funk
moments can be heard rocking dance floors in clubs across the world.
This album, his sole lp release "African Jumbo", is both the rarest,
and most in demand album from Iran, dated sometime in the mid 70's.
The 11+ minute track "African Jumbo" is not only a masterpiece of
psychedelic funk, but is also only available on this sole and
impossibly hard to find album. A simply wonderful experience full of
beautiful sitars and flutes, while heavy drums, horns and percussion
help fill out the wonderful melodies. Mehrpouya's talents weren't
limited to traditional instruments either. He was known to have
invented original instruments from bones and other natural
materials, while using pots as a replacement for drums. Truly a
magical album from a legendary artist within Iran's musical history,
and one that is near impossible to source as an original. A true
holy grail of Iranian music for both it's rarity and content, this
release is enriched with a bonus track, taken from a rare cassette.

PERCUSSION BITTER SWEET Max Roach's
masterpiece! This record is one of his most perfectly realized
visions -- and it's a marvelous album that combines politics and
modern jazz, yet still manages to swing! The players are some of the
hippest that Roach ever worked with -- and include Eric Dolphy,
Booker Little, Clifford Jordan, and Julian Priester -- and the
record features some of the best-ever singing from Abbey Lincoln!
Abbey's incredible on the track "Mendacity", an incredibly haunting
Civil Rights-era number that should go right up there with "Strange
Fruit", and which features wonderful alto work from Dolphy! She also
sings wordlessly on the track "Garvey's Ghost" -- and then sits out
the rest of the set so that Max and the group can wail on the tracks
"Praise For A Martyr", "Man From South Africa", and "Tender
Warriors". Incredibly hip -- and a perfect blend of soul, jazz,
politics, and pure righteous spirit! |

SCHIBBINZ -
LIVIN' FREE In 1967, a bunch
of US and Argentinean kids recorded a magical album which has
remained unknown for many years due to its extreme rarity, with less
than a handful known copies to exist. Released in 1968 in Argentina
by a label called Phonexa, the Schibbinz album could be regarded as
the ultimate teen garage folk-rock album ever. An album of fragile
beauty, full of teen charm, innocent vocals, jangly guitars,
charming lo-fi sound and lost-in-time atmosphere. It has the look
and sound that can only be found on some USA 60s private pressings
like Rising Storm or Summer Sounds. But Schibbinz music is something
else. So now we're proud to present this wonderful and mega-rare
album to the world, in a production counting with the band's
involvement and assistance. Master tapes are lost, but the sound has
been carefully remastered from an original near mint copy.
Extensive, detailed liner notes and lots of cool pictures from the
band's archives are all included in a 4 page insert. |

SHORTER, WAYNE -
SPEAK NO EVIL An album of
incredible beauty -- and one of the key early sides that Shorter cut
for Blue Note! It's nearly impossible to describe the genius of
these records without playing them -- and upon playing, all words
disappear in the brilliance of Shorter's incredible tone, solo
imagination, and writing! There's a nascent soulfulness here that
would emerge quite strongly across the field of jazz in the late 60s
and early 70s -- bubbling forth here on the session, with a sound
that we could only call Shorter-archetypal -- and return to again
and again over the years, as proof that few players ever measured up
as greatly at such a young age! The group's a quintet with Herbie
Hancock on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ron Carter on bass,
and Elvin Jones on drums -- and the set list includes "Speak No

TOASTERS - ONE
MORE BULLET Ska revivals come
and go, but the Toasters just keep doing what they do - which is
play third-wave ska that draws on the sounds of late-'70s 2 Tone
bands like Madness and the Specials as well as horn-heavy American
R&B. The only original member remaining is guitarist and lead
singer Rob "Bucket" Hingley, but he's really all it takes to make a
band the Toasters: his everyman vocals and karate-chop guitar pretty
much define the band's sound, along with the tight horn arrangements
and modest hooks. The current incarnation also benefits from the
presence of bassist Jason Nwagbaraocha, who also contributes harmony
vocals and some incisive toasting on "Where's the Freedom?" and
"Life in a Bubble." When they try to settle into a reggae groove on
"Run Rudy Run Redux" the results are a bit clumsy, but when they
appropriate material by the Dave Clark Five ("Bits and Pieces") and
the Everly Brothers ("When Will I Be Loved") the results are lots of
good, skanking fun. And by the way, if you download a pirated
version of this album, Hingley intends to find you and beat you up.
Fair warning.

VARIOUS - HARRY
SMITH'S ANTHOLOGY 2 (2XLP) The importance of
Harry Smith's work can not be overstated. Not only did he
single-handedly save much of American folk music from extinction,
but when he handed his record collection over to Smithsonian
folkways in 1952, he opened the floodgates for the American folk
revival of the following decade. Not since John and Alan Lomax had
anyone paid so much attention to saving the American folk song from
extinction, but unlike the Lomaxes, Smith was not a government
worker armed with a tape recorder, he was just a guy from Portland,
Oregon armed with a love for music and an insatiably curious mind.
So, when the U.S. Government began melting down old records to be
used as shellac during WWII, Smith kicked into high gear, buying up
as many old 78s from the '20s and '30s as he could find. Much of the
music found here then, comes from a time before television,
arm-in-arm with rock & roll, began beaming its über-culture into
every household in America erasing much of what had grown up locally
in each area. As can be heard so beautifully on these ballads, prior
to WWII America was in many ways no more than a patchwork of
territories, with local cultures and musical traditions reaching
both far into the immigrant past of each area's inhabitants, but
also into the future to create something wonderful and firmly rooted
in the newness and adventure of life on this new continent.

VARIOUS -
TUMBELE! (2XLP) 'Biguine, Afro
& Latin Sounds from the French Caribbean, 1963-74'. A look at
the unique and overlooked sounds from the islands of Guadeloupe and
Martinique. Lilting biguines, heavy gwo ka drums and tumbl rhythms
collide with the sounds of the carnival. Haitian, Congolese and
Puerto Rican influences are added to the pot in a percussive
celebration of Afro-Caribbean spirit. Often overlooked in the
English speaking Caribbean, the scattering drums and soaring
clarinets of the biguine ruled the airwaves and dancefloors of
Martinique and Guadeloupe in the 1960s. This album showcases the
vibrancy of the scene on the islands in the 60s and 70s - a scene
that would go on to develop the all-conquering sound of zouk in the
'80s. Uptown bands like Ensemble La Perfecta and Les Loups Noirs
combine heavy rhythms and psychedelic effects in an inimitable style
- check out the crazed Jet Biguine for a better idea! The deep and
introspective sounds of Monsieur Dolor and Guadeloupean hero Robert
Loison show the deep African roots of the music - songs born out of
the plantations, with an insistent rhythm and mournful vocals that
are unique to these islands. Overlooked outside of Paris, Montreal
and the French Caribbean for many years, this collection redresses
the balance by presenting the vital sounds of Martinique and
Guadeloupe - missing pieces of the musical jigsaw puzzle of the
Caribbean. |

this band was not a success in the past once you hear it--it's that
good. Warpig's long-sought-after self-titled debut will surely

WILLIAMS, HANK -
SINGS
Once in a great
while a truly superlative musical talent comes along, it only
happens a handful of times per century, and one of those times "it"
was Hank Williams. Despite his swift and total rise to super stardom
by the age 25, by 29 he was dead in the back of his own
Cadillac...but it is what happened in the meantime that made all the
difference. While America, returning victorious from the War in
1945, attempted to create an image of a invincibility, wealth and
power in the face of its citizens and the world, there was a boy
with a guitar from a place called "Wrong Side of the Tracks",
Alabama, who had another story to tell, a story that, amid all the
propaganda and ticker tape parades, Americans could relate to and,
judging from the record sales, obviously wanted to hear, and from
1946 to 1951 Hank Williams recorded enough hits to last country
music stations for the following fifty. He dominated the country
music charts throughout this period (with 11 number 1 songs and many
more in the top ten), and songs like "Cold Cold Heart", "Hey Good
Lookin'", and "Your Cheatin' Heart, have become standards in
American music. These five albums represent a complete chronological
retrospective (1946-1951) of the man who revolutionized not only
country music, but pop music as well. |

astounding!), and also some tracks in a bizarre crooner-lounge
"Incredible Strange Music" vein. Reissued for the first time, in

WHITELAW, PAUL
- BELLE AND SEBASTIAN PVP. 20.95
biografía sobre Belle and Sebastian.
Belle and Sebastian.

BIXBY, DAVE - ODE
TO QUETZALCOATL Since its
discovery in the late 90s, Dave Bixbys legendary $2000 private press
album from 1969 is considered by all serious record collectors as
the king in the loner/downer folk genre. After being involved in 60s
Michigan folk and garage-rock bands such as The Shillelaghs and
Peter & The Prophets, Bixby started playing acoustic guitar and
experimenting with LSD. After a year of drug abuse he felt broken.
Starting a soul-searching, spiritual journey, he wrote "Ode to
Quetzalcoatl" and most of the material for his second album,
Harbingers "Second Coming" in just one month and a half.

BLUE CAPS -
PARAGUAY 1969-1972 Paraguay is one
of the very few countries of South America that still haven't had
its own place in the 60's & 70's music reissue scenario, until
now. Born in Asuncin in 1965, Los Blue Caps found fame in Argentina
where they remained for nearly a decade. They released a good number
of albums and 45s, and as commonly happened back then, the record
company forced them to record some mainstream songs, resulting in
the fact that none of their LPs is great from start to finish but
they really have a bunch of amazing tracks, that have been selected
for this fantastic "best of" kinda vinyl release. Garage,
psychedelic, 60's beat-pop, there's a bit of all that in here. Album
opens with the astounding psychedelic garage stomper "No me dejes
solo" with its psychedelic effects and effective fuzz tones, being
the only English language song of the entire album. The rest of the
album has nice guitar with some fuzz here and there, as well as cool
organs. Limited reissue of 600 copies, with remastered sound,
extensive liner notes, photos. |

BROMA DE SSATAN
- ASI HICIMOS LA GUERRA 1982 , Tres
No
antes: ASI HACEMOS LA GUERRA.. Ixma (La Broma de Ssatan)

one of the most important Psychedelic bands in Portugal operating

harder, groovier Freakbeat. For the first time reissued in glorious

TREE PEOPLE -
HUMAN VOICES Watch out for
this rarity. You know the Tree People, late 70s predecessors of the
ongoing new folk movement in the USA. You know their 1979 debut
album and you know it's a masterpiece... but oh well, did you know
about their second album??? Surely not, especially because it was a
cassette only release at the time with a very short print. Luckily
enough, the Tree People guys kept the mastertapes of these
recordings and we're proud to be making this wonderful music
available now. After the CD version released last month, here's the
vinyl also with splendid sound quality. The music here is equally as
good, if not better, than the self-titled debut and a real must for
any folk and psych-folk lover. Acoustic guitars, subtile
percussions, wonderful flute work and some warm vocals, but overall
a real big dose of quality and originality that makes the Tree
People music be absolutely ahead of its time and therefore so much
admired today. A real beauty! Comes with an insert including liners
by the band's leader Stephen Cohen, as well as some pictures.

VARIOUS -
MISMAS CANCIONES

WATERLOO - FIRST
BATTLE
Regarded as one
of the best European progressive rock albums from the 70s, the sole
release by Belgian group Waterloo was originally released on the
Vogue label and is a highly collectable item being paid obscene sums
in the collectors market. Released in 1970 and entirely sung in
English, this brilliant album is a blend of progressive rock and
heavy prog, with obvious Jethro Tull influence but with something
else really of their own, making of it a very special album. We're
very pleased to present the first ever official vinyl reissue of
such a classic of the European progressive rock history, in high
quality reissue standards including an insert with extensive liners
and photos. Limited to 500.
