Amazing stuff
from Ahmed Abdul-Malik -- one of the early 60s most enigmatic
jazz talents! Malik was Monk's bassist for a few years, but by
the time of this record, he was working in a very
sophisticated cross-cultural mode -- pulling together many
different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into
a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records,
which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern
instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz, and
features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo
Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on
drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got
a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to
Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from
the time. Titles include "Nights On Saturn", "La Ibkey", "The
Hustlers", and "Oud Blues". |

Whenever
someone makes the transition from jazz instrumentalist to
R&B singer, he/she is bound to be lambasted by jazz
purists and denounced as a sellout. Roy Ayers was no exception
_ like George Benson, George Duke, and Patrice Rushen, Ayers
was frequently attacked by jazz's hardcore in the late '70s
for turning away from instrumental jazz and making
vocal-oriented soul and funk his main focus. But what didn't
interest jazz snobs excited R&B lovers, who found a lot to
admire about Vibrations and other Ayers albums from that
period. This 1976 LP boasted the moody hit "Searching," which
has jazz overtones but is essentially an R&B song. Ayers
and his band Ubiquity are also quite appealing on gems that
range from the sweaty, driving funk of "One Sweet Love to
Remember," "Moving Grooving," "Higher," and "Domelo (Give It
to Me)," to mellow quiet storm numbers like "Baby, You Give Me
a Feeling" and "Baby, I Need Your Love." With Vibrations,
Ayers reminded us that jazz's loss was certainly soul/funk's
gain. |

complement to the soulful sound of Smith, the man who almost
single-handedly pioneered the use of the Hammond B3 organ in
jazz. Backed at times by bassists George Duvivier and Milt
Hinton as well as powerful big-band drummer Mel Lewis, Burrell
and Smith dig into the gospel-ish "Travelin" with as much
fervor as they lavish on the Little Willie John/Peggy Lee
chart item "Fever." But its the azure side of such standards
as "Easy Living" and "Soft Winds" that rules the roost on this
superb collaboration. |

set was recorded right before Byrd's legendary run with Larry
Mizell in the early 70s -- and the electric approach is a bit
different here -- a style that blends Byrd's wonderful trumpet
lines with the larger ensemble mode Blue Note sometimes used
in the late 60s, but with a spacey, stretched-out feel that's
mighty nice! The album's somewhat similar to Byrd's Kofi set
-- but possibly a bit more open overall -- and players here
include Duke Pearson on electric piano, Jerry Dodgion on alto
and sopranos ax, Frank Foster on tenor, Pepper Adams on
baritone, Hermeto Pascoal on flute, Wally Richardson on
guitar, Ron Carter on bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Airto

recordings from March 13, 1958 see a 32-year-old John Coltrane
playing an obscure date with little known jazz trumpeter /
flugelhorn player, Wilbur Harden. These recordings made at the
legendary Van Gelder studios also include Tommy Flanagan on
piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums (while
the 2 bonus tracks feature Curtis Fuller on trombone, Ali
Jackson on bass, Howard Williams on piano, and Arthur Taylor
on drums).The immensely talented, but equally obscure Harden
appeared on several Yusef Lateef and Curtis Fuller records for
Savoy as well as leading his own sessions in the late fifties,
only to drop out of the jazz scene entirely by 1960 due to
health problems (and finally pass away in 1969). In fact,
Harden was a great composer and a pioneer on the flugelhorn
and all the tracks on this album are Harden compositions.
Coltrane, as history has shown, fared much better, and during
this period was just on the cusp of super-stardom. He was busy
playing around NYC with Thelonious Monk, and had recently
rejoined the Miles Davis sextet, and it would not be long
before Coltrane would begin leading his own sessions, soon
becoming a household name in jazz. 2 bonus tracks
previously not included in the original album. |

Recorded in
NYC on Oct 13, 1958, this album was originally released as
"Hard Driving Jazz" (mono version) / "Stereo Drive" (stereo
version) and the then 29-year-old pianist Cecil Taylor (not
John Coltrane) originally got top billing on this date. This
session is interesting because it is the only one Taylor ever
did with Coltrane, and considering Taylor's status as one of
the true founders of free jazz and Coltrane's status as jazz
legend it is a kind of missing link in the history of jazz.
Here the group plays two originals (one by trumpet player
Kenny Dorham and one by bass man Chuck Israels), while the
other two tracks "Just Friends" and "Like Someone In Love" are
standards, an interesting look into early Taylor, because by
the early sixties he was played almost exclusively original
compositions. One of the most uncompromising and unique
pianists in jazz, his difficult and percussive style has
placed him in a class of his own, making him one of those
artists you either love or hate.but love or hate him, there is
no denying his contribution to jazz, and that his visionary
music is still ahead of the pack. |

After playing
cool jazz for a few years, Davis recorded an album called
Walkin and "hard bop" was born. The year was 1954. Hard bop
was still slower than bebop, but more driving than cool jazz.
Where cool jazz is sometimes referred to as chamber jazz, hard
bop brought in elements of R&B and gospel. The Walkin
album is now considered to be one of Davis seminal albums,
with his all-star rhythm section playing behind him, Horace
Silver on piano, and the one-two punch of Kenny Clarke on
drums and Percy Heath on bass delivering the goods, as they
always did. Heath and Clarke went on to do another important
session that year with Davis, but in addition to Horace Silver
on piano there was another genius of the ivories, Thelonious
Monk. This, of course, was the infamous "Christmas Eve
session", which eventually became two albums, Bags Groove
(based on Milt Jacksons theme), and Miles Davis and the Modern
Jazz Giants. These two albums are important because they are
one of the few instances of Davis and Monk playing together.
1954 was also a significant year because it was Davis last
year in relative obscurity, the following year he played,
"Well You Neednt" at the Newport Jazz Festival and the rest is
history. All this happened in 1954. And it's all on this Doxy
album! |

1958 for Riverside, this was Evans' second album as leader,
recorded shortly after he had officially left Miles Davis'
legendary sextet and just before he returned to the sextet to
record the era-defining "Kind Of Blue". Miles took a lot of
flack for giving his piano slot to a white musician when there
were plenty of talented black pianists out there, but Miles
Davis was not interested in getting a good pianist, he wanted
an exceptional pianist, and that is exactly what Evans was.
Like Miles Davis, Evans became the standard by which other
jazz musicians measured their own playing, and now there is
hardly a jazz piano player around that can say that he has not
in some way been influenced by "the Evans style of playing".
With fellow Davis sideman Philly Joe Jones on drums, and Dizzy
Gillespie's bass man, Sam Jones, on the bass, this trio album
captures Evans at a critical moment in his career, having
proven himself to peers and critics alike (as the cover
testifies -with high praise from Davis, Ahmad Jamal, George
Shearing and Cannonball Adderley), not only this is a much
more confident and personal album than his first one, but it
documents a totally new style of jazz piano playing that went
on to influence generations to come. The album includes three
originals, including the acclaimed "Peace Piece", along with
Sonny Rollins' "Oleo", also a favorite of Davis at the time,
Cole Porter's "Lucky to Be Me", and Gigi Gryce's "Minority",

completely improvised over Latin percussion! The setup is
quite spare -- and quite different than Herbie's other Blue
Note work -- and the group features improvised backgrounds by
bassist Paul Chambers and 2 Latin percussionists, Willie Bobo
and Osvaldo "Chihuahau" Martinez. Herbie only wrote simple
sketches for the songs on the album, and most of the work on
the tracks was done live, spontaneously, in the studio --
creating a very free groove that never goes too far out, but
which is far more adventurous than usual. All tracks are long,

released in 1957 on the Bethlehem label, this obscure album
shows Mingus exploring new territory with his sextet while
incorporating vocals into his work, On the opening track,
"Scenes In The City", Mel Stewart (who played Henry Jefferson
in the American TV series All In the Family), performs a
spoken word piece written by actor and playwright Lonne Elder
III and the legendary Langston Hughes. The track is a snapshot
of Harlem and NYC in the 1950s, and for that alone this album
stands out in the Mingus repertoire. Although the rest of the
album features no spoken word or poetry, the playing is top
notch and sidemen - Jimmy Knepper on Trombone, Shafi Hadi on
sax, Clarence Shaw and Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Horace
Parlan and Bob Hammer on piano - can all evidently run with

officially issued until 1979, and then only briefly until

wonderfully, and the longer-than-usual tracks on the album
show a whole new side of his talents that were later reprised

Of Faces" fue publicado en 1975 en Black Saint, fue recibido
con escepticismo por algunos críticos, que vieron el álbum

the genius of these records without playing them -- and upon
playing, all words disappear in the brilliance of Shorter's
incredible tone, solo imagination, and writing! There's a
nascent soulfulness here that would emerge quite strongly
across the field of jazz in the late 60s and early 70s --
bubbling forth here on the session, with a sound that we could
only call Shorter-archetypal -- and return to again and again
over the years, as proof that few players ever measured up as
greatly at such a young age! The group's a quintet with Herbie
Hancock on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ron Carter on
bass, and Elvin Jones on drums -- and the set list includes

A great little
album cut by Nina Simone during the time she was working with
Weldon Irvine -- a live album that really has the lady
stretching out, and showing off all the cool, complicated
grooves she brought to a concert setting! Weldon did the
arrangements, and they've got a very righteous feel overall --
which really seems to inspire Simone in her interpretations of
the tunes, as she improvises a lot and really takes off with
the lyrics! The album includes a really haunting version of
"My Sweet Lord", the classic "Poppies", and a great poem/song
called "Today Is A Killer" that goes on for over 15 minutes!

Kathleen Waymon, better known as Nina Simone, originally
wanted to be a classical pianist, but she traded that dream in
to become The High Priestess Of Soul. While she is well known
for her recordings of soulful jazz, blues, folk and R&B,
she was also an outspoken civil rights advocate, and it was
this potent combination that made her the declared idol of
many. Her first recordings were made in New York City during
1957 for Bethlehem and feature Simone backed by Jimmy Bond on
bass and Albert Heath on drums, delivering classic and
emotional renditions of such standards as "Mood Indigo", "Good
Bait", "Youll Never Walk Alone", "Dont Smoke In Bed", "Love Me
Or Leave Me", "My Baby Just Cares For Me" and her soulful
version of Gershwins "I Loves You Porgy," which gave her a Top

Funky funky
stuff from Jimmy Smith -- a killer late 60s album cut in
collaboration with Johnny Pate, who's very much at the height
of his blackploitation power here! The backings are full, but
in ways that are quite different than other Smith albums on
Verve -- such as the sides done with Oliver Nelson -- and
Pate's groove here is plenty schooled in soul, yet also leaves
lots of room for Smith's organ lines as the main solo vehicle.
And as an added bonus, Jimmy also sings on the record -- in a
rough, raspy style that might not work on a straighter jazz
set, but which really sounds great here -- almost making the
music come across like some of those funky Quincy Jones
soundtrack numbers with vocals. |

through! Smith's working here with a really great group that

almost make the set feel like one of those classic Prestige
jammers from the same time. But added to them is a great horn
section of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Julian Preister on trombone,
and Bennie Maupin on tenor -- all of whom give the record a
slightly hipper, more modern feel -- in keeping with the Blue
Note groove of the time. Tracks are all nice and long -- and
titles include the originals "Turning Point" and "Slow High"

One of jazz
musics best kept secrets, Chicago born pianist Lennie Tristano
was a major innovator in his field and is considered one of
the greatest jazz pianists of all time. The blind pianist of
Italian descent was also the first jazz musician to perform
and record in the free jazz style. In 1949 (several years
before Ornette Coleman), his quintet recorded what is widely
considered the very first free jazz album. However, Tristano
was suspicious of record labels and recorded very rarely,
preferring to concentrate his efforts on teaching, opening one
of the first jazz schools in NYC in 1951 (students included
Charles Mingus, Lee Konitz, Wayne Marsh, among others), making
the few records he did record all the more significant. This
album, originally released on his own Jazz Records label (he
was also one of the first jazz musicians to start his own
record label) was recorded in 1955-56 in Tristanos Manhattan
studio and features Peter Ind on bass and Tom Weyburn on
drums. |

musics best kept secrets, the blind Chicago-born pianist
Lennie Tristano was a major innovator in his field and is
considered one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. He
also broke major ground with the release of this album,
Crosscurrents, in 1949, which is widely considered one of the
earliest recordings ever made (if not THE earliest) in the
free jazz style (years before his better-known colleague,
Ornette Coleman). It is not only significant, however, because
it is innovative, but also because the playing is consistently
excellent. In addition to Tristanos sextet (featuring Lee
Konitz and Wayne Marsh), we also hear clarinettist Buddy
DeFrancos sextet (featuring Teddy Charles), and both DeFranco
and trombonist Bill Harris playing with a big band.

Turrentine's no spoiler here -- as his tenor sax soars out
over the top of some sweet larger group arrangements from Duke
Pearson -- all awash in a great sense of soul, joy, and life!
The album's got a much brighter feel than you might guess from
the cover -- a vibe that's a bit similar to Stan's classic
Joyride album, but a bit more open and free -- thanks to the
lyrical touches of Pearson on the charts. Other players
include Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone,
James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Pepper Dadams on
baritone sax -- plus rhythm from McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob
Cranshaw on electric bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Joseph
Rivera on percussion. As on some of the other Pearson dates
from the time -- particularly those with Donald Byrd -- the
use of electric bass really opens things up, by creating a
subtle rhythmic pulse that really drives most numbers along.
And also in the Pearson mode, the added players aren't really
a horn section in the conventional way -- just a group of
like-minded, top-shelf jazz players who egg on the main
soloist with a great sense of enthusiasm for the music!

Cándido
Camero, uno de los congueros más importantes del mundo, grabó
estas "Brujerías" en 1971 con la banda de Tito Puente -de la
que Candido era miembro-, quien cuenta este disco como suyo
propio -lo que te dará una idea de lo BUENO que es este
material. Candido fue el primer hombre es tocar dos y tres
congas simultáneamente y fue un genio de la melodía y la
percusión. Atrapado aquí en formato de pequeña banda y nada
menos que con la compañía de los arreglos de "El Rey" Tito
Puente y el "tumbao" de Israel "Cachao" López al contrabajo en
varias canciones, ésta es sin duda una de las mejores
grabaciones de Candido. El set es una impecable selección de
temas percusivos jazzeros -con Candido al mando desde las
congas, y el grupo dejando crecer el groove por detrás en un
modo mucho más abierto que en sus grbaciones de los 50-. Toda
la sesión tiene un ardiente aire de "descarga", con montones
de Jazz, montones de percusión, y montones de acción!
"Take More Candy" tiene uno de los mejores solos de...
de todos los tiempos!! Candido se lanza a por todas.
Hay una técnica increíble en ese solo y el sonido es
igualmente espectacular. "Ti-Chi-Can" tiene a Tito Puente,
Chino Pozo a los bongos y Candido a las congas. Es simple, si
Puente cuenta estas "Brujerías" como suyas, TU también
