Boggs (b. 1898) got his start playing (while working) in the coal
mines all over the poverty-stricken Appalachian region. His earliest
recordings, a blend Appalachian old-time music and early blues, come
from 1927-1929. During this time Boggs was fairly popular and able
to make a living with his music, much to the dismay of his wife who,
like many others at the time, considered secular music a sin. By
1930, however, the Great Depression had forced Boggs to pawn his
banjo and go back to selling moonshine and working in the coal
mines. This would have been the end of Boggs' career had he

TECHNICAL SPACE COMPOSERS CREW
(Pre Can) The project name for a
one-off collaboration between Can's bass player Holger Czukay and
the painter Rolf Dammers. Canaxis 5 (1969) was an early attempt at
manipulating ethnic music (World music), in many ways predating the
discreet background music of certain ambient Brian Eno albums. The
album was made using tape loops from traditional Vietnamese music to
create some kind of 'acoustic sound painting'. The result was a
strange sound milage. It contained only two tracks:
"Boat-Woman-Song" and "Canaxis". Few ordinary instruments were in
use, only Holger's bass can be heard occasionally. Nowadays, this
album is nothing more than a curiosity, documenting the ambient
music in its' early childhood. Czukay's tape editing skills steadily
improved through the years - as proved by the mid-period Can albums
and even more so on his solo albums. |

Exprés, Vibraciones o Sal Común. Tras una corresponsalía en Nueva
York para El País, Diario 16 y El Periódico, fue contratado a
principios de los 80 por Rock Espezial, publicación de la que será
director durante varios años, hasta que ésta se transforma en
Rockdelux. También formó parte de la redacción de Musical Exprés,
mítico espacio televisivo presentado por Angel Casas, y extendió sus
actividades a la radio, creando varios programas y participando en
otros tantos. En 1985 cofundó y bautizó la revista Ruta 66, ya con
más de veinte años de trayectoria. En calidad de productor
discográfico y letrista, ha trabajado con Loquillo y Los
Trogloditas, los Rápidos, Desechables, Cancer Moon y otros. Es
coautor de los libros I Dreamed Of Noise, una biografía en inglés
sobre Sonic Youth, y Punk Book, así como autor de Escupidos de la
Boca de Dios y Combustión Espontánea, biografías de la Banda Trapera
del Río y The Stooges respectivamente. En la actualidad compagina la
codirección de Ruta 66 con colaboraciones en el periódico El Mundo,

One of the earliest figures
in American music, Charley Patton is not only often credited with
being the father of the Delta Blues, but perhaps equally importantly
was one of the first true "rock stars" of American music. Not that
he played rock music (according to musicologist Robert Palmer, he
played "deep blues, white hillbilly songs, nineteenth-century
ballads, and other varieties of black and white country dance
music"), but he acted like a modern rock star: flashy clothes,
flashy stage performances, virtuoso guitar playing, and a "live fast
/ die young" lifestyle. The tracks found here feature another giant
of the Delta blues: Willie Brown. Although Willie Brown was an
accomplished vocalist and his guitar playing was second to none,
Brown was perhaps best known as a sideman (and for his seminal "Make
Me A Pallet On The Floor"), accompanying Robert Johnson, Son House
and, as heard here, Charley Patton. He appeared on many of Patton's
sessions recorded between 1930-1934 and his amazing guitar playing
can be heard here on "Moon Going Down", "Some Summer Day", as well
as on his own "Dry Well Blues". Much of the material recorded here
was recorded in 1934 in NYC, just months before his death. "Hang It
On The Wall" and "Poor Me", recorded in February, were the last
songs he ever recorded. Previously released on Monk ONLY in the
limited box now sold out! |

ephemera and full annotation and band histories. Psych-Funk 101 - A
Global Psychedelic Funk Curriculum introduces students to the global
phenomenon of psychedelic funk music, and covers the "golden years"
of the movement, from approximately 1967 until 1980. This
compilation does not focus on American and British bands. Rather it
focuses on the bands throughout the Global Village that were
influenced by the innovation of American and British bands - that
many times one upped the heroes they sought to emulate. This
compilation focuses on bands influenced by James Brown, The Meters,
Sly and The Family Stone, Booker T and The MGs and The Bar Kays and
unsung rhythmic forces such as drummers Bernard Purdie, Idris
Muhammad, Earl Palmer, bassists such Carol Kaye and Jimmy Lewis. It
focuses on bands who took that energy and combined it with the flair
of psychedelic-rock musicians such as Jimi Hendrix and Cream - as
well as pop-rock acts taken by the experimental side of psychedelia
such as The Beatles. But these bands added their own, unique
cultural flourishes. The result is mind-bending. Think about it for
a second - what musical forces were greater than that of funk and
psychedelic music in the late 60s and early 70s? These forces,
combined by bands happy to incorporate folk music and
improvisational elements from other musical forms, lead to an
amazing body of work still being unearthed by researchers the world
over - and still capable of inspiring new investigations into shapes

Set) to out-and-out mod classics (The Fleur de Lys and The Richard
Kent Style) - all the genres and styles are represented and many of
the musicians involved went on to massive success in later years.
With mod enjoying its highest profile in a generation, from Weller
and Oasis to The Last Shadow Puppets and Twisted Wheel, this album
showcases a whole host of brilliant, undiscovered anthems for old

Pennsylvania duo's 5th full-length but the first to stick to just
one style which was, surprisingly enough, country music. That said,
the title of the album is only half-correct as there's actually only

Featuring some of Nashville's greatest session musicians (including
"Pig" Robbins, Charlie McCoy, and the Jordanaires), this is one of
Ween's finest records to date, with that classic Ween sense of humor
filtered through a distinct countrypolitan sound. |
