DELTA 5 - MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS
Delta 5 were part of the thriving Leeds post-punk scene in the late 1970s. This 7" features the band's debut single, "Mind Your Own Business", first released in 1979, backed with a remix by post-punk hero Peter Hook, best known as the bass player for Joy Division and New Order, under the name Man Ray. LINGG, LOUIS & THE BOMBS - HATE YOUR LAWS
Louis Lingg and the Bombs are goddamn punk-rock-garage-pop-anarcho saviours of the 2 and half minute pop song. They come from Paris where they regularly blow up little bars with explosions of snot and beer fuelled punk rock energy. The group is named after Louis Lingg, the famous Chicago anarchist who committed suicide on death row in 1887. Some of their songs are ultra-political anarchist punk rock and some of their songs are like children's nursery rhymes. ALL of their song's are full of interesting pop hooks and melodies and they are sung with energy and commitment. Their influences: Punk bands like The Briefs, The Epoxies, Antiflag, Pansy Division and The Dickies. They have a strong love of '77 style punk like The Buzzcocks, The Clash, The Adverts and The Undertones.

VENEREANS/PLATANOS - SPLIT

AUDIENCE - FRIEND'S FRIEND'S FRIEND'S
Whether or not Audience should be considered a "real Prog" band, but no matter how one might classify them this band certainly has to be considered a rather unique one. The combination of Howard Werths vocals and Keith Gemmells versatile use of sax, flute and clarinet is just immediately highly fascinating. All the tracks on this album are just equally great - although its true that the instrumental "Ebony Variations" with its playful jazzy renditions of a classical theme and Gemmels really virtuoso clarinet play doesnt fit quite well to the rest - Nonetheless this piece is an excellent one as well as a very rare one.

BEAUSOLEIL, BOBBY - LUCIFER RISING O.S.T. (4LP)
REPRESS SOON AVAILABLE!! A complete anthology of the recordings made for the Lucifer Rising motion picture soundtrack by BOBBY BEAUSOLEIL with THE FREEDOM ORCHESTRA and THE MAGICK POWERHOUSE OF OZ. This fully authorized and definitive release will include: ~Remastered recordings spanning 11 years, from the 67 recording to the Tracy Prison recordings of 78. ~4 full-length LPs worth of Lucifer Rising material with half being never-before-heard sessions personally selected by Bobby BeauSoleil. ~9 new pieces of art from Bobby: 8 record sleeve panels and one 2'x3' poster. ~2 posters: one by Bobby BeauSoleil and one by Dennis Dread. ~A much-extended version of the "Fallen Angel Blues" piece by Bobby that originally appeared in the Kenneth Anger DVD set. ~"Hymns to the Solar Temple"- impressions on a visit to Bobby at the Oregon Correctional Facility in Pendleton, Oregon by Dennis Dread. ~"The Saga of a Soundtrack" by Michael Moynihan ~Art from Dennis Dread for the back of the LP box, also to be included as a 2'x2' poster. ~Art from Dennis Dread for the front lid of the box which will provide a window into the works of Bobby's to be found within. ~Remastered by Robert Ferbrache, well known for his work with Blood Axis, 16 Horsepower and others. All art has been created specifically for this release. The music of Lucifer Rising reverberates with all the pathos and raw emotive energy of an ageless archetype. Like Kenneth Anger's film itself, the symbols evoked in sound are at once timeless and yet strangely born of a very specific time and place, a frozen moment that has been sealed to us forever. Something emerges from the grooves of this vinyl collection that we can only hope to borrow for a short while and ride like a solar disk to places yet unknown. Now, for the first time, all of the music composed for the soundtrack project has been compiled into a single public release. The Lucifer Rising Suite begins with the 1967 version of the soundtrack and continues through a logical sequence of the recordings made in the years spanning 1976-79. With respect to the latter, the original master tapes were mined for music that had not been heard by anyone in nearly three decades. The newly unearthed recordings were then restored, cleaned up and combined with those previously released to make the anthology as complete as possible. "The compositions that comprise the Suite are sequenced in an order that tells a story, after a fashion. It is a story that may be impossible to tell in a strictly literary manner, one that - like a mirrors reflection into another - is both personal and allegorical.

BIG BROTHER ERNIE JOSHEP - CONFUSION
Fringe-figure Ernie Joseph, the band's charismatic front-man, formed various groups around Southern California before finally forming his most successful effort, Big Brother, and signing to Bill Holmes' All American label in the late sixties. The band's first, and unfortunately last release, "Confusion", is intense, blues-heavy Southern California psych, which weighs in at the Hendrix-end of the spectrum. Known for its wild live shows, the band, despite being an important piece of the L.A. psych scene, was soon forgotten by all but a small army of devoted fans and collectors (who often break the bank to get their hands on an original copy).

BIRMINGHAM SUNDAY - A MESSAGE FROM BIRMINGHAM SUNDAY
Formed by some high-school friends from Carson City, Nevada, the band began playing clubs around the state in the late sixties, and soon landed a contract with Bill Holmes' (Strawberry Alarm Clock's producer) label, All American. This teenage band played mostly folk-influenced psych, with beautiful male/female vocal harmonies rising above the music (which featured Doors-influenced organ playing and some wind instruments as well). The album was originally released as a test pressing, and the impossibly-rare original copies have been known to sell for mind-boggling prices.

BLACK DIAMOND HEAVIES - ALIVE AS FUCK: MASONIC LODGE, KY
Recorded live on a hot-ass night of July the 24th 2009 at Dr. Johnny Walker's (Soledad Brothers / Cut In the Hill Gang) flat in Covington, Kentucky, this is the BLACK DIAMOND HEAVIES absolutely live and kicking out the jam Southern style. It's a VINYL and DIGITAL ONLY release. The LP comes on COLOR VINYL, pressing limited to 1,000 copies.Black Diamond Heavies is a self-described punk-ass blues duo from the South consisting of John Wesley Myers on bass keys, fender Rhodes, organ, and lead vocals and Van Campbell on drums, percussion and vocals. This is a another slab of grungy, dirty, blues punk rock'n'roll with a heavy, greasy, touch of soul. This time the two-piece traveled to Akron, Ohio, to team up with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and record in his newly built studio, equipped with vintage gear. The result is everything one would expect, and more. The "blues groove monsters" deliver another blues/soul/rock masterpiece of gothic proportions. Worth mentioning is a guest appearance by Ralph Carney on horns, best known for his long-time association with Tom Waits. Gravel-throated singer James Leg harbors a demi-doom perhaps due to having to hold together everything but the drums. He may be the only current broken blues carnival barker who heard John Lee Hooker long before Captain Beefheart or Tom Waits, or Man Man for that matter, and has yet to use a beard as evidence of purity-what with purity being something gutter boozers should rarely be concerned with. The razor-stabbed organ-fueled gutter-gospel, "Oh, Sinnerman," actually exudes some of the tempo meander of a rambling church sermon, but the sparse sound of a graveyard Bassholes kin.- Eric Davidson / CMJ "With a sound that's blues-rooted but steeped in Stooges sludge, the Heavies' cranky, cranked-up sets burn black as tire fires. Stylistically, BDH is often lumped in with R.L. Burnside and Tom Waits. That's a fine place to start, but the comparison misses the band's joy and boogie. Instead, think Exile on Main Street recorded in Howlin' Wolf's casket. Nothing smooth or clean here. Just eight-bar skronk in bad need of a tetanus shot." - The Pitch "Their attack of drums and keyboards is a mean, f-ed up, gospel punky hybrid and rocks with ragged, soulful passion. - Rock Sound "Tom Waits growls. Joe Cocker growls. Myers bark like a man who had his throat ripped out by a wolf. He gargles the thick blues drawl of a man who has never inhaled without a Marlboro Red in his gob." - NME "With just Myers on keyboards and vocals and Van Campbell behind the drums, the Black Diamond Heavies generate a mighty wall of sound and the duo cuts a hard, bluesy groove." - AMG

BOBAK/JONS/MALONE - MOTHERLIGHT
Known by the name of an album rather than the name of the group, Motherlight produced an album full of spooky psychedelia with progressive leanings, which works really well. Almost all tracks have a slightly unsettling atmosphere, originating in a clever use of dissonance, without being quirky. On A Meadow - Lea has good fuzz guitar paired to pastoral lyrics, while Mona Lose bears overt traces of malice. Burning The Weed sounds quite surprisingly akin to US Kaleidoscope. The Lens is Procol Harum on a bad trip and even foreshadows Joy Division! This is great!

BYRD, DONALD - SLOW DRAG
Beautiful stuff -- and one of the best Donald Byrd albums of the 60s! The album is a killer all the way through -- recorded with a group that Byrd maintained for 2 years, one that featured Sonny Red on alto sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums -- all of whom come together magnificently in a razor-sharp formation, mixing hardbop and soul jazz with an edge that you'll hardly find on any of Byrd's other albums from the time. A lot of the credit is due to Sonny Red -- who plays with a raspy tone that's odd for the alto, and which really draws out Byrd's solo skills. Walton's got a heavy left-handed approach that really hits some great grooves -- and the team of Booker and Higgins leap lyrically, yet also throw just the right amount of funk into the rhythms. Includes the Blue Break classic "Jelly Roll", the amazing jazz dancer "Book's Bossa", and the sublime "Slow Drag", one of the strangest groovers you'll ever hear!

CAPTAIN BEYOND - SUFFICIENTLY BREATHLESS
Captain Beyond incorporated a wide variety of styles into all of their music. They could rock out as well as mellow out. There were splashes of Santana, brushes of Iron Butterfly, dabblings of Yes, Black Sabbath, Hendrix, and countless others, but never to the point of derivity. Fans of just about any genre or sub-genre of classic rock music will find much to savor on this disc. The opening titular track is a hippie paradise of chugging, textured acoustic rhythm guitar twined with spacey fuzz solos and tight vocal harmonies. Another favorite is the Robin Trower-esque "Starglow Energy", a beautiful and anxious psychedelic rocker that you won't believe wasn't in the charts.

DEFIANCE - THE PROPHECY
Reformed after a 15 year hiatus, bay area thrashers Defiance return with The Prophecy. Currently featuring vocalist Steev Esquivel (Skinlab), guitarist Jim Adams, bassist Mike Kaufmann and drummer Mark Hernandez (Vio-lence, Forbidden), the band recorded the album in San Francisco and in early interviews Kaufmann confirmed, we always felt the band broke up too early so we plan to use this opportunity to pick up where we left off. Formed in 1985 Defiance recorded their first record in 1988. Product of Society (Roadrunner) was produced by Jeff Waters (Annihilator) and immediately found the band an impressive worldwide audience. Beyond Recognition, the bands third and last album was released in 1992. In 2005 the band finally regrouped after years of requests from fans. Artwork by Travis Smith (Death, Katatonia). Features guitarist Glen Alvelais (Forbidden). Limited to 300.

DOWN - NOLA
The combination of Phil Anselmo and Pepper Keenan should be enough to cause heavy metal fans to drool, but with a full cast made up of members of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and Eyehategod, Down is truly a supergroup, and performs as such. Make no mistake, though, the music inevitably comes back to Anselmo and Keenan. NOLA (an acronym for New Orleans, Louisiana) takes the two superstars' writing talents and distinctive sounds and focuses them in a feast of Cajun-style heavy metal. Like much of Pantera's music, NOLA is lyrically enigmatic and frequently celebrates the use of controlled substances. Glorification of cannabis aside, the album's true focus is inner melancholy and atonement for earlier sins. Keenan's own brand of crunching axework - the kind that typifies his work with Corrosion of Conformity - compliments Anselmo's genuinely sorrowful vocals, and the two propel the album to its logical conclusion without the flashy solos or other excesses that often accompany their separate works. The two also combine in a unique way on "Pray for the Locust," an instrumental that was written by Anselmo but consists simply of Keenan on the guitar. From the highly layered "Stone the Crow," the group's only major radio hit, to the ponderous, introspective "Bury Me in Smoke," the members of Down display their abilities to play quality rock & roll outside the comfort of their individual bands. In terms of consistency and sheer rock power, NOLA surpasses all but the very best of the featured artists' other works, and can proudly be embraced in any of the associated bands' catalogs. This is a landmark album that combines the talents of dedicated rock musicians, and should be included in any collection of heavy metal music.

EAST OF EDEN - SNAFU
Clearly the better of East Of Eden albums, this second album is a much proggier statement than Mercator Projected, but it is still plagued with imperfections but none are glaring. The sound is rather different but is also tighter (different rhythm section), but the three frontmen Arbus, Caines and Nicholson are still there. "Snafu" is almost a jazz album, deeply rooted in the avant-garde - with its Charles Mingus cover version, some tracks that play backwards etc. Its what the British press wouldve once called "jazz-tinged". And they had the bottle to pull singles from this album!

FEVER TREE - FEVER TREE
Fever Tree's lone hit single, the haunting 1968 tribal anthem "San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native)," perfectly captured the spirit of the psychedelic era. Although their signature hit led many to assume that they were a Bay Area band, Fever Tree actually hailed from Houston, Texas. "San Francisco Girls" quickly emerged as a staple of American underground FM radio, and won the band an international audience after becoming an airplay favorite of influential British DJ John Peel. "San Francisco Girls" is also the centerpiece of Fever Tree's self-titled first LP, one of the period's most distinctive debut efforts. As the album demonstrates, the quintet was adept at incorporating jazz and classical influences, ambitious song structures and resourceful production touches. Such memorable numbers as "The Sun Also Rises" and "Come with Me (Rainsong)" benefit from Dennis Keller's hypnotic vocals, Michael Knust's dynamic guitar work and Rob Landes' inventive keyboard textures. Also included is a memorable medley of the Beatles' "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out," and a unique interpretation of the Neil Young/Buffalo Springfield nugget "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing." Fever Tree's expansive musical settings also feature key contributions from a pair of noted arrangers: David Angel, renowned for his work on Love's Forever Changes and Gene Page, whose resume includes work with the likes of Phil Spector and Marvin Gaye. Fever Tree would release three more well-received albums, before disbanding at the dawn of the 1970s. Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in the band's vintage work, and this one-of-a-kind debut album remains a deeply compelling sonic artifact. Sundazed's new vinyl edition of this vintage gem is mastered from the original analog tapes, features complete original cover art and is pressed on high-quality, high-definition vinyl, the better to recapture the original magic of this timeless album.

FOSTER, RONNIE - TWO HEADED FREAP
Amazing stuff by Ronnie Foster -- a sweet little album of slow funky keyboard tones, much more loosely arranged than his later work, with a dope groove that was years ahead of its time! The album's in some ways a blueprint for some of our favorite jazz-based hip hop -- and although Ronnie's playing organ, on most of the cuts, he handles the instrument more like it's a Fender Rhodes! Funky jazz with a sinister, soulful groove -- with players including Gene Bianco on harp, Arthur Jenkins on congas, George Duvivier and Gordon Edwards on bass, Jimmy Johnson on drums, Gerorge Dvens on vibes and Gene Gertoncini on guitar. Includes the massive cut "Mystic Brew", which is a tasty Tribe sample, plus lots of other goodies like "Chunky", "Summer Song", and "Don't Knock My Love".

GORDON, DEXTER - CLUBHOUSE
Rare Blue Note work from Dexter Gordon -- an album that was recorded during Gordon's legendary run for the label in the 60s, but not issued until a brief vinyl pressing nearly 15 years later! The record's got Gordon vamping in tight hardbop formation -- a sound that's strongly 60s Blue Note all the way through, and which shows the great control that the label helped bring to Dex's music -- giving him new focus and energy to take off on much freer flights later in the 60s. Other players on the date include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Barry Harris on piano, Billy Higgins on drums, and Bob Cranshaw on bass -- and Hubbard's trumpet is an especially welcome element here on the more upbeat numbers. Titles include "Hanky Panky", "Jodi", "Lady Iris B", "Clubhouse", and "Devilette".

GROUNDHOGS - SOLID
In the tradition of the best bands of the era, the Groundhogs took something known, like "the blues", and twisted it into something entirely new, so that over three decades later their sound still has a character all its own. Led by the extremely talented and inventive guitar wizard / idea-man Tony McPhee, with Clive Brooks and Peter Cruickshank as the hard-hitting rhythm section, "Solid" (1973) was one of a string of excellent albums by the band during this period, but on this album, the band really stretches out, boldly trying out a number of effects and instruments (mellotron, for example) mostly with great success.

HANCOCK, HERBIE - INVENTIONS & DIMENSIONS
A really unique little record from Herbie Hancock -- one that's almost completely improvised over Latin percussion! The setup is quite spare -- and quite different than Herbie's other Blue Note work -- and the group features improvised backgrounds by bassist Paul Chambers and 2 Latin percussionists, Willie Bobo and Osvaldo "Chihuahau" Martinez. Herbie only wrote simple sketches for the songs on the album, and most of the work on the tracks was done live, spontaneously, in the studio -- creating a very free groove that never goes too far out, but which is far more adventurous than usual. All tracks are long, and titles include "Succotash", "Triangle", and "Mimosa".

HUNGER! - STRICKLY FROM HUNGER
Hunger! (originally from Portland, Oregon), were full-fledged members of the L.A. psych scene of the late-sixties, and despite their opening for top-shelf acts like the Doors and The Strawberry Alarm Clock, their one and only album did not make much of a splash at the time, and the band dissolved soon after its release. However, the album has since become one of the most collectible in its genre and upon listening one can see why. This rhythm-heavy Doors-influenced hard psych is frequently referred to as "one of the best psychedelic albums of all time"! Band member Ed King went on to play with the Strawberry Alarm Clock and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

"Hypocrisy" is just one of the strongest albums on death metal ever, with Lead frontman Peter Tägtgren unleashing all his passion with a heavy vocal performance, a thrilling keyboard work and corrosive riffs. The lyrical themes are about a pessimistic futuristic vision, dealing also with sadness, despair and nihilism. On the other hand, this is a really varied album. We can find a lot of different rhythms, intensities and melting points between styles. Starting with the blood-freezing, overwhelming anthem "Fractured Millennium", passing through the extremely brutal and aggressive "Apocalyptic Hybrid", going back to some beautiful and heavy semi-ballads like "Elastic Inverted Visions", "Until The End" or "Disconnected Magnetic Corridors", blasting with the Hardcore-like rapid song "Time Warp" and slowing down with the sad, depressive closure "Paled Empty Sphere", this album has an experimentation level barely seen before and, what is even more uncommon, all the new elements proved here success with mastery. One of the high points of "Hypocrisy" is without doubt its incredible atmosphere. The aggressive riffs and a razor-like, cold keyboard will cut your skin deep into your blood, but at the same time Tägtgren put a lot of emphasis in song structures, with very interesting rhythm changes and long instrumental parts that even give a progressive touch in songs like "Paranormal Mysteria" (which is an example of a simply perfect song writing). It has everything needed to conform a masterpiece. Limited to 300.

HYPOCRISY - THE FOURTH DIMENSION (2XLP)
We are honored to contribute to the metal scene with the vinyl release of this classic death metal masterpiece. Of all HYPOCRISY albums this one will always be their darkest work, nearly an hour of engulfing, mystical and esoteric Death Metal sounds embalmed with black dyed atmospheres and Mr. Tägtgren's subhuman vocals. What can be said about "Apocalypse", "Never To Return", "Black Forest", "Reincarnation", "The North Wind" and the introspective title track? They're all classics, among the best tracks the band has written as a Death Metal band. limited to 300.

KELLEY, WYNTON - KELLEY GREAT
One of the few non-trio sides recorded by Wynton Kelly from this time, and it's a nice batch of long tracks that feature the pianist with Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter, both of whom are at the height of their young talents at this time. Very tightly groovin', with a good in the pocket feel, mostly because Paul Chambers is on bass and Philly Joe Jones is on drums. Two great Shorter originals -- "Mama G" and "Sydney", plus "What Know" by Morgan, and "Wrinkles" by Kelly. (Gold label pressing with deep groove, in a cover with Kelly Great mis-spelled Kelley Great. MANN, HERBIE - PUSH PUSH
One of Herbie Mann's biggest albums -- and one of his funkiest too! The cover's a bit of an off-putter -- although it probably helped sell the record, back in the day -- but the grooves are as rock-solid as anything that Herbie cut at the time -- tight, focused, and a perfect showcase for his soulful work on flute! Tracks have a groove that's somewhat relaxed -- almost a shift from the soul jazz vibe of Mann's earlier Atlantic work into some of the freer modes that were showing up in the CTI generation -- and the players on the date include both Duane Allman and Cornell Dupree on guitars, Richard Tee on keyboards, Chuck Rainey on bass, Ralph MacDonald on percussion, and Bernard Purdie on drums -- a player whose work here is definitely a key part of the sound!

MCGRIFF, JIMMY - ELECTRIC FUNK
One of Jimmy's funkiest albums ever -- a sweeeeet batch of short, hard, and funky cuts -- and a record that ranks right up there with the mighty Soul Sugar for sheer funkiness! The album's great all the way through -- tight arrangements by Horace Ott, who also plays electric piano on the set, making for a clean, cool 2-keys kind of groove. Loads of great cuts -- including "Spear for Moondog", "Tight Times", "Funky Junk", "Bird Wave", and "Back on the Track".

ORCHESTRE POLY-RHYTHMO DE COTONOU - KINGS OF BENIN URBAN GROOVE (2XLP)
"1972-1980". Repress! A fine mixture of hard psychedelic Afro-funk, driving Afro-beat, deep Afro-Latin and Cuban grooves, all with that unique flavour that ruled the dancefloors, gatherings and parties of 70's urban Benin (Dahomey).

RED, SONNY - OUT OF THE BLUE
An amazing set from altoist Sonny Red -- a player who hardly ever got to make any albums as a leader, and who really burns brightly on this Blue Note classic! Red's got a tone on alto that's as deep and sharp as most tenorists of his generation -- extremely soulful, but with a really raspy edge that's almost modern at times -- a combination that's quite unique, and which makes his playing on a few key albums well worth tracking down. This album's one of the best of Sonny's few dates on record -- and it features the saxophonist working with two different groups -- both headed by Wynton Kelly on piano, and with either Sam Jones or Paul Chambers on bass, and either Roy Brooks or Jimmy Cobb on drums -- a hell of a great rhythm lineup, no matter how you slice it! Both groups are right on the money, and the whole album swings very nicely -- and titles include "Alone Too Long", "The Lope", "Nadia", "Bluesville", and "Blues In the Pocket".

SICK OF IT ALL - DEATH TO TYRANTS
After releasing three albums on Fat Wreck Chords, as well as a live album and a collection of rarities, the band took on the challenge to push themselves further. Death To Tyrants was recorded with Dean Baltulonis (Give Up The Ghost, Most Precious Blood) at Atomic Studios and mixed by Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Heaven Shall Burn). "There's a political slant to a number of songs, because of the more desperate world view we have nowadays," Majidi, "But we still share personal experiences, philosophies and moods that we hope everyone can relate to." Proving to be an institution of hardcore while different trends came and went, the band have crafted an album which proves why they are the hardcore heavyweight champions of not only New York, but the world. It's their longevity and conviction that has kept the band's reputation untarnished and legendary. On Death To Tyrants, the band pulls no punches and shows clearly why they are the definition of "hardcore."

SMITH, LONNIE - TURNING POINT
A stone killer from organist Lonnie Smith -- one of his completely cooking early albums for Blue Note, and a hard-burner all the way through! Smith's working here with a really great group that includes Idris Muhammad on drums and Melvin Sparks on guitar -- both of whom give the album a really heavy bottom, and almost make the set feel like one of those classic Prestige jammers from the same time. But added to them is a great horn section of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Julian Preister on trombone, and Bennie Maupin on tenor -- all of whom give the record a slightly hipper, more modern feel -- in keeping with the Blue Note groove of the time. Tracks are all nice and long -- and titles include the originals "Turning Point" and "Slow High" -- plus versions of "See Saw", "People Sure Act Funny", and "Eleanor Rigby".

TIAMAT - A DEEPER KIND OF SLUMBER (2XLP)
TIAMAT got the top of their songwriting and composition with this album. " A deeper.." goes further this time from what the band got with the great "Wildhoney", and explores psychedelic, dark ambient, gothic and pinkfloydish landscapes during the entire album. A path that Johan Endlung would never leave in their future albums. Very accessible and more commercial than ever in an angular masterpiece, unusual and reflecting the aim for innovation and originality that Edlung keeped in his mind, now as a one-man band project than never before. Limited to 300.

TURRENTINE, STANLEY - SPOILER
Stanley Turrentine's no spoiler here -- as his tenor sax soars out over the top of some sweet larger group arrangements from Duke Pearson -- all awash in a great sense of soul, joy, and life! The album's got a much brighter feel than you might guess from the cover -- a vibe that's a bit similar to Stan's classic Joyride album, but a bit more open and free -- thanks to the lyrical touches of Pearson on the charts. Other players include Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Pepper Dadams on baritone sax -- plus rhythm from McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Joseph Rivera on percussion. As on some of the other Pearson dates from the time -- particularly those with Donald Byrd -- the use of electric bass really opens things up, by creating a subtle rhythmic pulse that really drives most numbers along. And also in the Pearson mode, the added players aren't really a horn section in the conventional way -- just a group of like-minded, top-shelf jazz players who egg on the main soloist with a great sense of enthusiasm for the music!

VARIOUS - TUMBELE! (2XLP)
'Biguine, Afro & Latin Sounds from the French Caribbean, 1963-74'. A look at the unique and overlooked sounds from the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Lilting biguines, heavy gwo ka drums and tumbl rhythms collide with the sounds of the carnival. Haitian, Congolese and Puerto Rican influences are added to the pot in a percussive celebration of Afro-Caribbean spirit. Often overlooked in the English speaking Caribbean, the scattering drums and soaring clarinets of the biguine ruled the airwaves and dancefloors of Martinique and Guadeloupe in the 1960s. This album showcases the vibrancy of the scene on the islands in the 60s and 70s - a scene that would go on to develop the all-conquering sound of zouk in the '80s. Uptown bands like Ensemble La Perfecta and Les Loups Noirs combine heavy rhythms and psychedelic effects in an inimitable style - check out the crazed Jet Biguine for a better idea! The deep and introspective sounds of Monsieur Dolor and Guadeloupean hero Robert Loison show the deep African roots of the music - songs born out of the plantations, with an insistent rhythm and mournful vocals that are unique to these islands. Overlooked outside of Paris, Montreal and the French Caribbean for many years, this collection redresses the balance by presenting the vital sounds of Martinique and Guadeloupe - missing pieces of the musical jigsaw puzzle of the Caribbean.

WILSON, REUBEN - LOVE BUG
Heavy funk from Reuben Wilson -- one of the last great organ players to emerge from the 60s Hammond scene, and one of the hardest hitting cats at Blue Note during the funk years of the label! The album's a tight one all the way through -- performed with a combo that has Idris Muhammad playing some nice snapping drums, plus Grant Green on guitar, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and George Coleman on bass. Includes the funky cuts "Hot Rod" and "Love Bug", plus other groovers like "Back Out" and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me".

YOUNG, LARRY - HEAVEN ON EARTH
Larry Young's last official release for Blue Note, and a return to more straight-ahead soul jazz organ playing after his freer set from the year before. Despite that fact, though, the set's got its darker moments, especially since Byard Lancaster's on alto and Herbert Morgan (who we only know from the Young Blue Note sessions) is on tenor. Nice modal organ tracks, with a good groove, and excellent solos. Young's wife sings on a version of "My Funny Valentine", and other tracks include "The Infant", "The Cradle", and "The Hereafter".
