Originally
released in 1991 by Lookout! Records, the Shit Split reached many a punk
rocker, inspiring a legion of kids to fuck shit up! And now, after being
unavailable for 18 months, this classic is back in print thanks to the
granddaddy of all US punk labels, Alternative
Tentacles. Blatz and Filth exploded out of the East Bay scene at 924 Gilman
Street, home to Operation Ivy, Green Day,
Crimpshrine, Rancid, Jawbreaker, and hundreds more. Blatz (featuring past
and future members of The Gr'ups, The Criminals, Dead and Gone, and
Subincision) took a raucous, slightly more melodic sound mashed with
hair-raising female/male vocals, while Filth (formed out of the ashes of
Isocracy, The Vagrants, and Crimpshrine) featured razor-gargling vocals
over super punk guitars. Both bands lived the life of chaos and disorder,
getting arrested for nakedness or being assaulted by brick-wielding
suburban tweakers. Somehow, in the studio, the two groups harnessed the
destructive power of their live shows (and lives), producing a classic
slab of pure East Bay punk fucking rock! Both bands
live on in spirit today, if the countless patches still worn by mohicans
and crusties around the world are any indication. The LP contains the
original version of the Shit Split: eight songs from Blatz, including
their signature "Fuk Shit Up" and a cover of Fear's "I Don't Care About
You," and seven songs from Filth, including "Scarred for Life" and their
version of Peter and the Test Tube Babies' classic "Banned from the Pubs."
The Shit Split double-lp contains everything on the LP plus all records
released by each band (Blatz's Cheaper Than Beer 7", Bitches and Beer
split with Tribe 8, and track from Lookout!'s Can of Pork comp; Filth's
Live the Chaos 7" and This Is Why We Are the Drunks split with Submachine)
plus a bonus Blatz live/practice/sound collage and Filth's 1990 cassette
demo. |

Uno de los más conocidos
grupos colombianos son Los Flippers, pero poca gente fuera de Colombia
sabe de este bonito disco que grabaron en 1973. Probablemente sea por el
hecho de que fuera autoeditado en el sello de su líder Arturo Astudillo en
lugar de hacerlo con sellos relativamente importantes como hicieron con
sus anteriores discos. La música en este disco es especial, puesto que
mezcla psicodelia con sonido progresivo y soul también. Con muy buena
producción, aquí tenemos a Los Flippers en su punto álgido de inspiración
y experiencia instrumental, y el resultado es mucho más maduro que sus
anteriores grabaciones. Con todas las canciones originales a excepción de
un cover de Buddy Miles, Los Flippers usaron varios efectos psicodélicos
además de algo de viento. En esta primera reedición de "Pronto
viviremos.", incluímos también un tema extra sacado de un raro single
anterior, con un temazo en onda Iron Butterfly. Remasterizado a partir de
masters (excepto el bonus track), incluye además un insert con notas del
propio Arturo Astudillo. |

with their second album Im sure you already know that Holly Golightly
& The Brokeoffs are Holly Golightly and Lawyer Dave (A one man drum
& guitar extravaganza). Since their debut album, You Cant Buy A Gun
When Youre Crying (Damgood 283 LP/CD) they have been touring the world
including two, three month tours of the States and one 2-3 month hike
around Europe including Hollys biggest ever tour of the UK. They stopped
off in Spain to record this album in late May and it follows on really
well from the first album, in fact its an even better album with tracks
like the first single My 45 (Damgood314) a great song about marital bliss
and a re-recording of their last single I Wanna Hug You, Kiss You, Squeeze
You (Till my arms fall off). Heres what Holly & Dave have to say about
the album. "In the studio...This particular project was recorded in the
middle of a 50 date tour during the only break we had. That week found us
in Gijon,
Spain on
the Northern coast. We had chosen to record there at an analog studio by
the name of Circo Perotti which is outfitted with a lovely selection of
vintage microphones and loads of ancient outboard treasures to play with.
After wrangling with all the ghosts, goblins and gremlins that inhabit
gear and studios of this nature, the record was completed in five days...
which is one more day than we spent the last one, so it may seem a little
over produced to some! While we must admit it was probably not the most
carefully recorded string of sounds ever committed to tape, we do feel
that it suits the songs. We were a bit weary and dirty. If you listen
close, you'll hear the mud on our shoes on more than a few tracks.

A mediados de los sesenta,
un buen nmero de bandas empezaron a tomar prestados elementos de msica
oriental para aadir un toque misterioso y extico a su sonido. Notorios
ejemplos son los Kinks con "See my friends", los Byrds con "Eight miles
high", los Beatles con "Norwegian wood" o los Stones con "Paint it black".
Menos conocidos
que esos, pero reconocidos en el ambiente underground como maestros en esa
mezcla, fueron los Cedars (tambin conocidos por Sea-ders). Slo que para
ellos no se trataba de flirtear con otra cultura, sino que ellos formaban
parte de ella. Formados en Beirut, Lbano, en 1964 e inicialmente conocidos
como Top 5, en 1966 adoptaron el nombre de Sea-ders (o Cedars!), y
grabaron un total de 10 temas hasta su fin en 1968. Dos de esas canciones
no se llegaron a editar, ni lo hacen ahora. Las otras ocho estn ahora aqu
juntas por primera vez, con sonido remasterizado. La asombrosa mezcla de
msica oriental y occidental es espectacular...el clsico "For your
information" (enorme xito en Turqua por entonces!) es asombroso, as como
"Thanks a lot" o "Hide if you want to hide". Son 8 temas en total slo,
pero esta es una edicin de primera, te digo yo. Hzte con una de estas 600
copias numeradas a mano antes de que sea demasiado tarde, amigo...y
disfrtala! |

and DOA were the two pillars of the Vancouver, BC, Canada punk scene who
caught Jello Biafras attention and were spotlighted in the landmark
Alternative Tentacles compilation Let Them Eat Jellybeans. The Subhumans,
first active between 1978 and 1982, were the more elusive of the two, with
many out-of-print releases fetching bank on eBay and making it difficult
for present-day fans to connect the dots. Now, the Subhumans join the
Alternative Tentacles "Reissues of Necessity" pantheon with Death Was Too
Kind, a collection of material from the early years, lovingly remastered
from original source material: the very first single Death to the Sickoids
(only 500 were pressed); the Firing Squad single; the self-titled EP
produced by Bob Rock, who went on to work with Metallica, The Cult,
Offspring, etc.; "Look at the Dawn" and "Pissed Off. With Good Reason,"

sung (!!!) great cover of the Prunes' "I had too much to dream" by
Conjunto Oliveira Muge in Mozambique, the eerie French sung "Eh bien mon
ami" by African Fiesta... Nicely done release with remastered sound, and

sello Gramophone, que se transformaría en EMI años después, mandó a tres
empleados a Irak. Sí, leen ustedes bien, a Irak...más concretamente a
Bagdag. Durante tres años estuvieron registrando grabaciones de distintos
artistas que pululaban por entonces así que ya imaginas lo que puedes
encontrarte en esta doble Lp, locuras y maravillas con sabor árabe, turco,
kurdo, irakí...todo ello completado con fotos y artículos...eh!!! deja de
babear, loco de la música, y píllate este documento sonoro histórico.

te vale. ...Of Baghdad, 1925-1929". In the mid-1920s The
Gramophone Company - soon before it became EMI - employed two or three
Europeans to criss-cross Iraq. They logged regional
demographics, assessed the German competition, and checked out the scores
of record shops and hundreds of musical venues. In Kerbala its man
fearfully disguised himself as an Arab. This was the groundwork for three
sessions, conducted in Baghdad in the second half of the decade,
which produced nearly one thousand recordings. Business was good - the
first group of records, though deemed aesthetically unsuccessful by the
Company, immediately produced twelve thousand sales to just two outlets in
the city. 'Give Me Love' is second in Honest Jon's excellent series of
albums exploring the 78s held in the EMI Archive at Hayes. Drawing on the
full range of these Baghdad recordings, it is a wondrous,
deeply poignant glimpse of social living since obliterated, in which
ethnicities, faiths and traditions appear woven richly and meltingly
together, however precariously. There is dance music featuring Arab folk
singers from the countryside, backed by professional Jewish musicians in
Iraqi styles popularly termed 'Egyptian', and perfected in nightclubs
where the first duty of the secular women singers on this album was
prostititution. Also including some Arabic word-play, in a nod to the
musical form of the Arabic mawwal, a Hebrew hymn is kick-started with a
cry of 'Allah!', most likely from one of the Jewish performers. There are
pieces from Bahrain and
Kuwait; sometimes mixed
together in one performance, the different dialects are far-flung. There
are beautiful high and lonesome Kurdish violin improvisations; and some
unaccompanied circular breathing on a zourna so unearthly it seems to
cross late Coltrane with Sun Ra. All the songs are characterised by
searing emotion and crisis of feeling; many by erotic urgency. As with the
other titles in the series, the recordings have been startlingly restored
at Abbey Road; and they are presented with full translations, rare
photographs (in this case, several performers), and notes - including an
extensive interview with a citizen of Baghdad throughout this period, who
knew many of the musicians here personally. |

(aunque fue grabado en 1975), "Songs" de Warlus puede ser considerado como
el rey absoluto de todos los discos oscuros y privados editados en Francia
en los años 70. Warlus fue el proyecto personal del músico Richard
Maubert, que creó una pequeña obra maestra de personal y melancólico
pop-folk-fuzz psicodélico, grabado de forma casera y con una atmósfera
realmente lisérgica. Cantado en inglés, sorprendentemente recuerda a otros
discos privados USA de la época como Kath. Un disco muy especial que sin
duda atraerá por igual tanto a fans de oscura psicodelia como a
interesados en la escena underground D.I.Y pre-punk de los 70. Si te
gustan otros raros discos franceses como Dandelion o Les Temps Heureux,
alucinarás con Warlus. Reedición hecha con el permiso de Richard Maubert,

Hailing from New Jersey, X ONE WAY X is the side project of Bill Henderson
(THURSDAY, THE PROCEEDURE, BETWEEN THE WARS) - a true phenomenon of
MySpace, after "Generic Hardcore Song" found its way onto the site the
band have received in excess of 60,000 plays which led to their debut
album on Underground Commique in 2005. Their side of the split album -
entitled "Start Whenever" (a nod to GORILLA BISCUITS) features 10 brand
new tracks. On the flipside are self proclaimed legendary Boston (UK, not USA)
straight edge hardcore band YOUTH OF STRENGTH who allegedly inspired the
whole straight edge scene with demo tapes in the mid 80s that were the
main influence on YOUTH OF TODAY and CHAIN OF STRENGTH. After their 20
year old demo "Shouting For A Better Tomorrow" was released on 7" in late
2005, the bands notoriety spread throughout the hardcore scene, the band
have subsequently reformed and re-recorded some of their old material with
brand new songs - as displayed on the 21 tracks of their side of the
album, entitled (YOUTH OF TODAY fans turn away now!) "WE'RE NOT IN THIS TO
BREAK DOWN THE WALLS ALONE"... inspirational band or just a bunch of
thirty-somethings messing around with too much time on their hands? You
decide! In addition to the 31 tracks on the LP, there is also a bonus CD
included featuring an extra 28 tracks - thats an eye watering 59 tracks in
