A meet-up would be great .. i kind of enthusiastically joined this group .. hoping  to learn  python over the last 6 mths .. but i am so stuck with perl .. and work .. hardly getting time to even start  .. unless some one could do a crash course for beginner  in a day .. and if some one could explain Why i should opt for python rather than perl .

Python is another tool in your toolkit. Use it when appropriate. Use perl when appropriate. Crash courses are not feasible and in my opinion waste of time. I'd rather that people sit and understand the basic stuff by themselves and we do something hands on during the meets, something simple enough for even a python beginner to be able to do hands on.

+1 Mehul.
I think, such so called crash course must be focused on specific things given we understand the basics.
Happy hacking.

Let us not just have talks this time. Ideally, I'd like to have 1 talk, 1 demo and 1 hands on session in which we have 2 groups - newbies and advanced working on something useful.
Also, let's look at venue options.

Good Idea, let me see if I can do either a demo or hands on on some thing.
Last time I did a Pylons talk but hardly had 4 people to listen.
May be I would choose to convert this into a complete demo of
installation and basic project.
This all can happen only if we do it on or after 30th Nov.
Happy hacking.

Format is good - something for everyone. I have a small web app that is ready and yet to be deployed ( http://webcomic.in ) so would like to do demo of the same or launch it. We can have a python introduction session so as to reboot the user meets and attract some new developers. Hands on session could be advanced. @parth can we get IITB as a venue ?

@krishnakant I like to propose the date of 2nd dec 2012. It's a sunday and everyone can be expected to be free. Timing 11.00 AM and once the session we can have lunch at glumohar if that works for everyone ?.

If possible I can take the intro session on Python.
Over the time I have created some wonderful material for beginners out of the workshops I have been doing all around the country.

Adding the guys at FOSSEE for the venue.

I'll follow up on the time and venue.
Let's work on finalising the topics
1. Talk - Flash by Dhruv
2. Demo - webcomic.in by Ankur
3. Hands-on - ??

Flask right ?

I think we can have a Hands-on session with Flask and something more research based for
talk.

agree with you!  Count me in for  pythong+mongo/redis stuff. Happy to give beginner talk (pymongo).
If you recall last hackathon, everyone wants to do stuff around mongo!

I would say python beginner should be "Extra" topic, at the start or end <not in middle>

So if anyone wants to learn python, they needs to come early or stay there late!   Coz, rest of folks who already know will get bored!

I'd rather have that as a one day workshop because there's just so much you can do in one session. And series haven't worked out well in the past.

I don't even mind the very same day, although scheduling it I think will be difficult.

@mehul and @parth can we get the venue fixed asap reason being we need atleast 3-4 weeks to spread the word around.

@Krishnakant  let us avoid pylons reason being the Pylons project has now moved towards Pyramid. I like @mehul's suggestion on Python workshop being a day long process. I gave a python 101 talk a year back and one needs atleast 4-5 hours to do justice to it. What I suggest is let us have two meets consecutively and then try to organize a day long workshop "Learn Python" only for beginners an we can reach out to college students for that meet.

@Dhruv Be nice if you can put a small write up on what you will cover in the talk. Personally I look forward to the talk.

get it done by today.

I'm thinking we have these long workshops once every 4 or 6 months as a separate event rather than holding it at the same time as regular meets. That will give enough time to prepare and publicise it.

@mehul That's nice. Also a prerequisite of a sort placed by the guys at Indian Python Society to get PyCon hosted elsewhere is to have a visibly active Python local community/user base, makes total sense to me. So let us do this along with regular meets, hopefully some day we can bring PyCon to Mumbai. For 2013 they are already booking the hall it seems so 2014 is our best chance.

@parth My bad i forgot you joined enthought @hardik thanks for helping us out.
