Font Question

I am in the process of starting a new Mini Mac workstation. I was wondering if there is a better way of handling fonts. We have 7 mac minis running Creator. There has to be a better way to handle the font issue between work stations.

Is there a way to create a folder on a server and have each workstation look at that folder for fonts? Just wondering.

I hope someone out there has an answer.

Are you using any Ad Tracking software?? We at the Herald use Morcor's Xpance (now Brainworks apparently), and they offer a Font server piece. However, i decided not to go that route myself for our Ad Builders. I like to keep it as simple as possible, we have a pretty standard set and i found it easier to keep it to the desktop level. Since we only have 7 ad builders it is more manageable. I use Linotype FontXplorer X 1.2.3; that is the last "free" version of that software. The new versions are around $100ish (off the top of my head). We use mac minis as well, but they are the 4,1 version and still running Snow Leopard that runs FontXplorer fine. I do have it running on a couple Mountain Lion stations and it still seems to work.

The trick is the copy the fonts a directory on the local machine and then add the fonts to the program. This latest version needs to have the physical residing on the system rather than ingested into the program.

I have a .dmg installer of that free version and would share if you want to try it out.

Yes, I agree with Steve. We use to implement a font server until it became
too costly and too hectic. Though, we also work with a standard set of
fonts, so it was easier for us just to load the standard set onto each
machine into the System Library (as opposed to the user library) so users
on that machine have access to all the fonts. It works out great. We use
the built in Font Book to load the fonts, and a nice complimentary program
to access special characters called PopChar from Ergonis software.

Though, if your always adding new fonts, you might want to add the fonts
you have into each user's library so they can add any new fonts themselves
(that you would put on the server for the user to access). If you keep
them in one location as we do, then the user will need admin privileges to
add fonts. But since we are not adding new fonts all the time, we chose to
keep them in one location so the fonts stay nice and secure without being
altered or accidentally deleted.

Just remember, you need to have a font license for each machine you load
the font onto.
