Take a deep breath, I'm new to Linux.

I'm trying to set up the svga x-server on my laptop, but I have no
idea which monitor to choose and how to calculate the modelines. I've
done this yesterday on my desktop and it worked, so I hope to have a
basic understanding of what it's all about. But what "monitor" do you
choose, when you are using a 12,1'' (800x600) TFT display?

Any hints would be much appreciated.

If you look under www.linux.org/hardware/laptop.html for your laptop, you
will probably find the information you need.  I was able through that to
find the Neomagic driver needed to run linux on a Compaq 1620 laptop.

:OK, up and running. 800x600 works, 640x480 is completely messed up
:(tiled screen). I simply removed that resolution from the XF86Config

Anatol, check out ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/XBF. (that is if you have
NeoMagic card as that is the impression that I got). There is even a
sample usable XF86Config file...

It must be something very simple that a newbee just can't see. X uses
that "screen" section in the XF86Config file which is for the vga16
driver. A section for the svga driver exists and AFAIK it's ok, but X
isn't interested in it...

        I'm not sure I understand the problem, so take this with a grain of
salt.  I don't think the SVGA server would use the vga16 section in
XF86Config (I could be wrong here).  Look at the first line in
/etc/X11/Xserver; are you running the SVGA server or the VGA16 server?
If you are running the SVGA server, try commenting out the vga16 section
of XF86Config and see if the SVGA server runs or spits out an error
message.
