Thanks to George for the photos.
It's amazing what can happen sometimes when the reports imply that
the whole area is just plain awful. Kay and I were prepared to
leave after a few runs, especially since it drizzled all the way to
Govy. Light fog and sun greeted us at Meadows. Ice was abundant.
The groomers were a bit goofy and off the groom was smooth
ice/hardpack. Cascade opened, so we headed up. The groomers were
OK, but no better. On a lark we decided to try Marmot Ridge.
Marmot Ridge can be very nice in powder conditions, or some of the
most awful junk imaginable. But we tried it anyway. The approach
was icy, but the back side had very nice snow. We did it 3 times in
a row. George was still around for this. Similar thing for Upper
Elevator and the rolling terrain around it. I even skied some
terrain I hadn't been on before.
I never would have imagined that we would find such good off-piste
snow today. We just kept skiing and skipped lunch.
BTW, there was plenty of awful stuff too, but by early afternoon it
softened and could be skied. Cry Baby was in about the best shape
I'd ever seen it.
