Sounds like there will be a meeting on January 29th at The Loft, (119 West Main St. Missoula, MT 59802) starting at 6:30PM.

Here is some information on The Loft:
http://www.theloftofmissoula.com/

I believe that we're allowed to bring alcoholic beverages and stuff too :)

I'll try to walk through a Gentoo install in VirtualBox if you are interesting in watching.  I'll have a few different images at various stages so I can get some of the compiling and waiting out of the way beforehand.

Here is the Gentoo installation handbook: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml

I'll be briefly mentioning steps 1 through 3 and step 4 is where actual stuff will happen.

Brad, is it possible to test out hooking up to the projector sometime before the meeting?  I'd rather spend the time there presenting rather than actually tinkering with the projector and xinerama/twinview or whatever I'll need to use, but that might be fun :P .. or people can literally watch over my shoulder, that is fine too.

I haven't been to an MLUG meeting yet, but I'd like to come check it
out. Is there anything special I need to know about entering the
venue? Never been to the Loft, but hopefully navigating the way in
won't be too difficult?

It's been years since I've played with Gentoo, so I'll be curious to see
how it's changed since 2005. Also would be interested in discussing
possibilities regarding getting a wireless mesh network started in
Missoula for local p2p communication that doesn't rely on access to any
ISPs, if anyone else might be into that...

I'm currently feeling quite under the weather and I doubt I'll be feeling good enough to be social by Tuesday evening.  This is unfortunate because I was looking forward to seeing you all, seeing the space that The Loft has to offer and presenting on my favorite distro.

Oh bummer!  I hope you feel better soon, Seth!

Is anyone else willing to do a presentation on Gentoo or another distro?  (or have alternate suggestions?)  Of course, we can always just get together and chat, but it's been mentioned (and I agree) that it's nice to have something specific planned for the meetings.

Hiya Ben,

I've been to the Loft (located at 119 West Main St in Missoula) once before.  If I recall correctly, the on Main door has a sign and you'll go up some stairs located on the left.  As you probably already saw on earlier this evening on the list, we may not have the Gentoo presentation on Tuesday after all (unless someone else offers to do so, since the original presenter is ill.)

I'm also certain that someone at the meeting will be interested in hearing more about your wireless mesh network idea.

Hope to see you there!

Hey Seth, I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Hope you get better soon.

I'd like to hear more from the group, quickly if possible, on your preferences, about whether to cancel the meeting and reconvene next month, or to continue on this Tuesday sans Seth.

I personally enjoy the disorganized bull sessions, and I usually learn a lot from them. I do think we should continue to schedule more formal educational activities, but I think we should still meet when formal activities fall through. This is sort of a win-win, because those who may dislike disorganization can skip the bull sessions and still attend the more formal events.

Please let us know your preferences by early monday evening, and we'll go from there.

よろしくお願いします!

--Ryan

The turnoff for me about the disorganized bull sessions is that the more-talkative peeps wind up dominating the conversation in various ways that detract from the feeling of productiveness and community.  If I wanted to not get a word in edgewise and/or if I wanted to dwell on subjects that don't pertain to me, I'd attend a lecture instead of a group meeting.  For example (and I apologize if this seems harsh, I'm not trying to single anyone out), talking about the Raspberry Pi at the last meeting was cool but returning to the subject of the Pi six more times while we were just trying to make introductions around the circle, wasn't as cool.

My point is that without regularly occurring events/presentations/demos/workshops I personally will lose interest in attending MLUG meetups.

That's my two cents.

-Mike

Based on how I'm feeling today, I will likely be at work tomorrow .. as well as attending the LUG.

Sorry for the alarm.

Thanks, Ryan.

I'd still like to meet on Tuesday evening as well. If we do end up
cancelling though, I need to know ASAP so our Facebook page event can be
updated too (I'm not sure if everyone that has 'Liked' the Facebook page
is also on this email list.)

Whoops! My email wasn't sorted by date, so I didn't see your note, Seth
(and work is CRAZY today, so I'm frantic) ;)

Glad you're feeling better and I hope we'll see you on Tuesday at 6:30,
presenting Gentoo!

Seth, that's good to hear. We'll look forward to seeing you. I hope we didn't pressure you into it though. Take care and hope you feel better soon.
