The only reason the tech support is good is because people contribute
back as they can, that's the only way it works. If a huge influx of
non-comitters comes in it can break down the open support system as it
were. It's the people who return the favor that keep the open support
communities working. Also it rarely works like paid-for support. You
can't just go in and expect them to answer every single question, as
commonly happens. You have to be willing to research the answers
first, then if you're unable to find an answer, ask. Sometimes asking
might mean asking where to start to look (but that should be taken
care of by a projects FAQs and such).
So really, the support is anything but free, it's just a different
investment than a monetary one.
