I hope Josh Leuze has been getting his talk together about i18n-ing a
plugin, because I'm nominating him to speak on this subject at our
next meeting.

I've been thinking about it, I'll be ready!

Yeah, we're about two weeks out from the next user group meeting at The Nerdery. So Josh, better get cracking on that presentation.

What's on the docket so far:
  • Setting up your theme/plugin for translating - Josh Leuze
Anything else you all want to see (not sure if Josh want's to talk in front of everyone for the whole meeting)?

As a reminder, two topics I mentioned for the last meeting are (that haven't been covered in a while):
  • Site performance tips
  • WordPress security

Just a thought, since Josh is going to be talking about localization and plugins, is anyone interested in a quick, "My first plugin" primer? It may be appropriate as a lead in to his presentation (if he wasn't planning on covering that already I could).

I'd be interested in a primer.

I'm also looking forward to learning more about security.

I can do a session on security this month and maybe in a month or two performance (which is a bag of snakes even with great tools like W3 Total Cache).

I was planning to cover internationalizing a simple plugin, so starting out with a "My first plugin" primer would be perfect.

I would love a my first plugin primer.

If you want to get a good presentation together for W3 Total Cache to present in March or April that'd be awesome. It is a plugin I've referred to in previous performance talks, but I have never covered (and I can't remember anyone covering it in the year and a half that I've been going to the meetings).

Josh, do you want to cover "my first plugin" primer, or should I take care of it?

Sure, I can roll the plugin primer and plugin internationalization into one session. Does anyone have any good ideas for a plugin?

Are you looking for ideas to do in the "My First Plugin" session?  A while back, I created a function that displays a random background image on a website based on a pool of "Background Image" custom post types.  That might be a relatively straightforward and useful plugin for the session.  Just a thought!

Also, I would like to do a show-and-tell lightning round of 2-minute presentations.

Has anyone worked on something recently that is demoable?  I have a couple of fun things I would like to show off.  :)

I am usually the last person to want to get up and talk at these, but
I actually just finished a project that I am really proud of,
featuring two of *my* first plugins. (a miracle by itself!) So if you
need another lightning talk, I'd love to do one!

I apologize if this isn't the right place to post this.

A friend and I would like to attend your next meeting. Your website
says in one area that your meetings are the 4th Thursday of the month,
in another area that they're every other month on the 4th Thursday,
the Agendas page looks like it hasn't been updated, this thread makes
it sound like you're meeting this Thursday, and the countdown on your
site says it's 23 days until your next meeting... It's enough to
confuse newcomers like us. :)

1. When are your meetings?

2. Do we need to RSVP? If so, how?

Thanks.

I'm not the official go-to person on this, but don't see anyone else that has responded. Yes we are meeting this Thursday, at the Nerdery. I think the subjects this time are first-time plugins, and plugin internationalization. And there will be a show and tell; a couple minutes each for anyone who has done something cool they want to demo. I'll leave it to Toby and others to fix the website as I don't have permissions to do that. We start at 6:30 with free pizza and soda, compliments of the Nerdery, and then the meeting starts at 7. Usually runs until 8:30/9.

We used to only meet every other month, but for a year now we've been meeting every month on the 4th Thursday of the month. We will be meeting tomorrow night (6:30pm food arrives, 7:00pm we start the meeting), and Toby should be posting the agenda sometime today. There is no need to RSVP, just show up (and bring some friends).

It seems the countdown widget cannot determine "fourth thursday of the
month" properly without PHP 5.3... so I removed the widget until
mspwordpress.com gets an upgrade.

Doh!  Good ol' PHP 5.2.

Gillian, Can we upgrade to PHP 5.3 on the site?

The gathering is tomorrow (Thursday) at the Nerdery.  Pizza and pop at 6:30, official fun at 7 p.m.

I will post the official agenda this afternoon.

Tim,
I've got you penciled in for March on the topic of WP Security or WP
Performance. Just let me know as we get closer to the date which you
would like to cover.

At the January meeting of the MSP wordpress group, there was a gentleman from Hennepin Tech who thought we might be able to host an unWordcamp at Hennepin Tech. If you know who it was, or if he's on the forum, could you please respond? We're now thinking of next November and we'd like to talk about the possibility.

Thanks! I'll be posting my notes soon with the links that I referenced last night for anyone who wants to learn more.

I thought the show-and-tell projects were sweet, hopefully we'll have some more projects to show off next month!

Thanks for taking and sharing those photos, Adie!  I have uploaded them to the "summary" post where they wait, like two lonely souls waiting for a bus at midnight in Minneapolis, for Josh's notes.

Josh, You have a user in the mspwordpress.com install, so you should be good to go there.
