Which way do you recommend installing Google Analytics? Should I use a plugin or add it to footer.php or functions.php?

I use Yoast's Google Analytics plugin. Works well.

+1 on the Yoast recommendation. You can also use either Google Tag Manager or the GA code in your HEADER (not in your footer) as well. I like Yoast because it's easy and it works.

We also use googleanalyticator, although yoast's plugin rocks.

Thanks. I will use the Yoast plugin, I’m using their SEO one as well. I’d wondered if it was better to just install it into the code instead of using another plugin. I’m curious why you say to add the code in the header instead of the footer. In the past (in static sites), I’d always added it to the footer.

Thanks,

Jodi - the new GA code loads asynchronously, so it only sends data to Google when the page fully loads. However, in order to capture the most data while the page loads, you put GA in the header. That allows for reports like the GA page speed report to work, because it calculates the delta between when you start loading the page and when it finishes.

Previously you put it in the footer because you wanted to load the GA code last to save on download time. It's no longer an issue with asynchronous code.

That's very useful to know, Jeff, thanks!
So when using a plugin like Yoast, where do they put it? Header?
