Been lurking awhile but Tim Elliott can vouch for my sanity! ;-)

Was wondering if anyone has deployed a secure video streaming
capability in WP? There are lots of solutions (e.g., Bits-on-the-Run;
Amazon S3 using a URL encrypting commercial plugin) but in two client
cases we'll be FTP'ing in .mp4 videos and delivering them on secure
member pages with the JW Player licensed. The key, of course, is to be
certain that no one can simply forward the links to others who could
then access & download the videos.

"Secure Files" looked interesting as a plugin but it's not functioning
quite right and there isn't much info. We'd use Vimeo but they have a
strict policy of non-commercial and other similar services charge a
monthly fee that's beyond either client's ability to pay.

Thoughts?

What about restricting the videos using vimeo them making sure folks are logged in to the page that displays the video.

Does VideoPress provide viewing stats?

Yes, the stats are built in to the WordPress.com stats. Says you can use third parties too though:

That's pretty badass, and just as much as Easy Video Player gives me it seems. I might have to try that out. The price is very nice too.

Thanks for pointing to that one Josh.

No problem, I've been looking for a good excuse to try it out myself.

I'm looking for a place to put the video interviews I'm doing for http://lifeofthefreelancer.com, and that looks like a great place.

So far it's working great. However my posts aren't password protected. We'll see how it goes once my first video goes live tomorrow.

Love VideoPress and use it all the time but you can't mask a
URL...meaning someone could use it to send to their friend who could
then watch the video for free. (Note: To try this, use Safari on a
VideoPress video and go to "Window>Activity" and you'll see the
filename being streamed and you can snag the URL and play it
independently).

Vimeo has a strict "no commercial use" policy (even though they seem
to violate it constantly for 'friends').

This is why I cannot recommend Vimeo for clients other than my non-
profits. Here's what Vimeo says on their site about commercial use:

Do Not Upload Videos Intended for Commercial use.

- You may not upload commercials, infomercials, or demos that actively
sell or promote a product or service.

- Exceptions: independent production companies, authors, musicians,
non profits, churches, artists, and actors may show or promote the
work they have created.

- Businesses may not use Vimeo to externalize their hosting costs.
Vimeo (including Vimeo Plus) is not a business service.

- You may not upload videos containing ads before or after the video,
unless given prior written permission from an authorized member of the
Vimeo staff. Videos with any advertisements in them, including links
to commercial sites, regardless of content, will be removed.

- You may not upload videos pertaining to Multi Level Marketing (MLM),
get rich quick, cash gifting, work from home business, or any other
dubious money making ventures.

- You may not upload product promotions or sales videos, such as real
estate walkthroughs.

- Television stations may not redistribute their programming.

- We reserve the right to allow certain commercial content for those
businesses who have coordinated sponsored advertising campaigns or
direct partnerships with Vimeo.

Too bad too....they're the perfect service for training videos and
other content one wants to restrict to a domain and have a call to
action....but it *still* isn't possible to encrypt the URL in transit
and therefore anyone can, for example, snag the URL from Safari's
Activity (or comparable browser) which includes that video's token ID
and then download the source video.

Pretty tough to monetize content when it's so trivial to snag it.

Another option is using a service like Wistia so you can do commercial offerings along with analytics, etc. It comes with a much higher cost though.

Discovered a solution to protect videos streamed!

Implemented Drain Hole (compatible up to 2.9.2 but having zero issues
on 3.0: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/drain-hole/) and it allows
you to place videos outside of your webroot, create a custom URL to
access them, and make that access role specific. I just installed and
tested it and it works flawlessly...even if someone snags the URL it
will NOT allow them to download and/or view the video.

Matching this with WishList Member and/or MemberWing will allow me to
create and deliver a membership site with both subscription access to
content and having that content protected (and 'Drain Hole' protects
any file placed in the protected directory). Also, I'm using the JW
Player plugin and have licensed the commercial version for use on
client sites.

That is a wicked cool solution. And DrainHole seems really sweet. Gonna have to play with that.
