What high-end managed hosting environment do you recommend?

We have a site that needs 24/7 support access, preferably via phone.  The max budget is $200/month.

Has anyone tried wpengine.com?  If so, what are your experiences?  Any other recommendations along those lines?

Thanks!

I'm curious what classifies one as high-end.  The traffic they can handle?  I thought you only did early mornings with the babe, not late nights? ;-)

Reid,
Thanks for sharing your experiences.  Who do you use in lieu of the two that you mention?

Thanks!
Toby

Hi Toby
We had a very difficult experience with wp-engine. Super nice guys, and it seemed like they wanted to do a good job - but at the end of the day they couldn't provide half of the features that they had promised. I see that they just recently launched added Git support, so maybe they're stepping up their game.

I have heard similar things about page.ly as well.

Good question.  Here is how I define "high-end" off the top of my head:
  • When I call tech support I get to speak with a tech support person who is helpful.
  • When I call tech support I am not put on hold for more than 5 minutes.
  • Knowledge of WordPress-specific requirements.
  • Consistent availability and up-time.
  • Honest when things go wrong.
I suppose that's really it.

Regarding working at night...today was an odd day.  :)

Hi Reid,

I'd be interested to hear more about the issues you ran into with WP Engine. I've got a couple customers with them and the service has been great so far.

I'm about a week away from pulling the trigger on a professional level or higher account with them. But, I'd like to hear about your frustrations as a bit of balance to all the positive PR they've been getting.

I have 2 clients in the initial stages of using WP Engine. I'll let you know how it goes, but the consensus of what I read online says WP Engine is 'the best' with the caveats of them being a very specialized platform (restrictions on plugins, can't run source control on the server -- though you can now git-deploy). Some people have had bad experiences, and I guess they've really beefed up their offering in the last few months.

Not WordPress specific but great support (ticket and phone) -- if you want a great general purpose host that can run WP well:

I've heard good things about Synthesis hosting (Genesis is no longer required) and they don't put number of domain limits on Multisite installs.

Here's a comparison between the top 3:

ZippyKid and Nodeki are other options -- not sure about support though.

I've used Dreamhost VPS, and while it's great for quick and easy setups, it's performance is severely lacking even when you max the ram. What is really nice is they offer a seamless upgrade to a dedicated server which offer far better performance; and the dedicated servers are around the same price as the maxed out VPS. Only limitation is the dedicated server has a hard storage limit, but they do offer unlimited bandwidth which is uncommon for dedicated servers.

Thanks,
Nick

Toby,
You should ping Josh about using WPengine. We use it for one client that has a multisite install. They are pretty responsive but I would say we have to contact them for a lot more things than we would normally have to with another host. I think some of that may be because they are more setup for individual installs.

So far, rocky.

Running into the same issues Reid/Modern Tribe did: they are very restrictive on what you can do (outside WP itself).

Looks like I'll be investigating other high perf. hosts or splitting the site into 2 pieces (WP, private API) to make the WP Engine servers not work too hard...
