New WP hosting service that is between wp.com and doing it yourself,
for $50/month.
Being a developer and a major geek, I guess that I would rather use my
own box than give up control. However, I basically live in an echo
chamber. What do you all think about services like this? I know
Page.ly was talked about during the last meeting, and now WP Engine.
Link to post about it (not promoting RWW, just saw it there first):

Topic: XML-RPC issuePeter Fleck <pfh...@gmail.com> Jul 28 05:59PM -0500 ^
I'm having some trouble autoposting from Posterous to a WordPress
blog. Posterous tells me "The site settings for this autopost site
don't allow autoposting." (I think they mean the WP site not the
Posterous site.)
XML-RPC has to be enabled and it is. I've tried giving Posterous both
admin and editor privileges. Posterous can check the authentication
and doesn't complain. But still the error.
I set this site up with 'index.php' at root and WP in the WordPress
folder. I believe I have it configured correctly and I don't get any
errors when browsing the site. But I'm wondering if that affects the
XML-RPC situation.
Any ideas?
Peter

Like any api, xmlrpc is an endpoint that expects to see what it needs at the
top level. Are you pointing the endpoint into the wp folder?

Peter, are both XML-RPC and Atom publishing checked? Posterous might be going over Atom.

Garrick - Tried it with Atom on and off.
Mitch - if I point to the wordpress folder it says it can't
authenticate because it can't find a valid endpoint. It does seem to
authenticate when I point it at root where index.php sits.
I also tried a symbolic link to the xmlrpc.php file placed at root but
that didn't work.

I'm guessing this is in production, or I would suggest moving the whole
folder to root, and ruling out several things.
Maybe try that on a subdomain with a duplicate of the files to narrow down
the issue?

Topic: Secure Video Streaming?steveborsch <sbo...@gmail.com> Jul 28 01:22PM -0700 ^
Been lurking awhile but Tim Elliott can vouch for my sanity! ;-)
Was wondering if anyone has deployed a secure video streaming
capability in WP? There are lots of solutions (e.g., Bits-on-the-Run;
Amazon S3 using a URL encrypting commercial plugin) but in two client
cases we'll be FTP'ing in .mp4 videos and delivering them on secure
member pages with the JW Player licensed. The key, of course, is to be
certain that no one can simply forward the links to others who could
then access & download the videos.
"Secure Files" looked interesting as a plugin but it's not functioning
quite right and there isn't much info. We'd use Vimeo but they have a
strict policy of non-commercial and other similar services charge a
monthly fee that's beyond either client's ability to pay.
Thoughts?

What about restricting the videos using vimeo them making sure folks are
logged in to the page that displays the video.

Yes, the stats are built in to the WordPress.com stats. Says you can use
third parties too though:

That's pretty badass, and just as much as Easy Video Player gives me it
seems. I might have to try that out. The price is very nice too.
Thanks for pointing to that one Josh.

No problem, I've been looking for a good excuse to try it out myself.
