I think it would be a good idea to have an option to have Tbird compact
all folders on shutdown as well as empty the Deleted folder. That would
save some people a lot of hassle because they keep forgetting to
compact, and it would be convenient, because you would get both jobs
done at once.

Both present:
- Account settings>Server Settings>Server Settings>Empty Deleted
folder on Exit
- Tools>Options>Advanced settings>Network & Diskspace>Disc Space

That is not quite the same thing. The Disk Space setting reminds you to
compact if the volume of deleted items gets past a certain point. I
mean something that would empty the deleted file and then compact
automatically when Tbird is closing.

If you want to get rid of that prompt then goto Tools > Options >
Advanced > General > Config editor. Now type in filter:
mail.purge.ask
Double click on that preference to set it false.

The Xpunge extension will do both with one click *before* you close the
program down - but not automatically, AFAIK.

Hmmm.....re: "mail.purge.ask"; that option doesn't show up here (TB
2.0.0.23 on XP SP3)

There is no need to have crossposted this to .wishlist as the feature is
already included.
