In firefox 3.5, you can only clear recent history or do private
browsing, which also does not memorize history. But I do not want to
clear history, I want to reduce needed disk space and thus erase the
cache and nothing but the cache. (I am working on a Linux system with a
quota and am permanently near the upper limit. Clearing the cache
usually gets me below the quota.) This was easy in previous firefox
versions (two clicks) but seems to require you to do the cache clearing
manually by navigating to the appropriate directory now, which is a pain
in the neck.
Is there an option to get the previous behavior back?

You can clear the cache from Options > Advanced > Network. There is a
clear button there and that will clear the cache. You can also do it
from the Tools menu > Clear Recent History if you select only cache.

This still works in firefox 3.5.4. I did not remember that there is a
second way to clear the cache. Thanks.

This works only in versions before 3.5. You don't get to select only
cache, when you do clear recent history. You only get to select the
time span for recent history that you want to clear. But if I have one
method that works with two clicks that is fine.
By the way, the "clear-cache button" addon suggested in another message
is not a solution on linux systems. It does not really clear the cache.
It just moves its contents to a new directory called Cache.Trash. This
does not reduce storage consumption, of course. I need to completely
get rid of the cache files.

Following up myself...
I just realized that EE is right, but I did so only after trying out the
"clear recent history" button. Once you have decided to really clear
"history" (which was not my intention) you get a box "details" that you
can click. And there, lo and behold, is the old menu, with the settings
from the previous firefox version by the way (in my case "cookies" and
"cache"), where you can choose what to erase. But I must say this is
misleading, given the fact that "history" had a particular meaning
before, referring to only the list of visited websites.
