Misinformation on websites annoys me, especially on dead websites that no one updates. Please give me feedback on this idea:
You see misinformation on a website. You drag your mouse to highlight the error. Then you click a button on your browser labeled "Report Error."
A form opens, showing at the top the text that you highlighted. Below is a field for you to type the correct information. There are buttons to click, such as "spelling error," "grammatical error," "HTML character display error," "factual error," etc.
You then click “Submit.” The form goes to the website’s content manager. A new metatag could be developed for webpage headers identifying an e-mail address to send alleged errors to. If no such metatag is in the header, the form could be sent to the WHOIS contact.
The website’s content manager corrects the error and returns the form to you. If you are satisfied that the error has been corrected, you approve the correction and the ticket closes.
But if the website’s content manager doesn’t correct the error within a certain amount of time, perhaps one week, then Firefox browser users viewing the webpage will see a yellow flag next to the alleged erroneous information. These users can click on the yellow flag to read what you reported. They can add comments to your report.
If the website’s content manager doesn’t correct the error within 30 days, the yellow flag is replaced with an orange flag.
If the website's content manager doesn't correct the error, your form goes to a third party fact-checking organization. This could be a volunteer organization similar to Wikipedia. The fact-checking organization would have the power to replace yellow flags and orange flags with red flags.
Another color flag would be used for controversial, disputed, or uncertain information. This flag could be white, i.e., a black line outline of a flag. This flag would be used to prevent flame wars, i.e., not to create another venue for cranks to argue about whether Obama is a Muslim.
