Hi everyone,

*Next Meetup*: January 28th 6:00PM - 8:00PM, I'll bring sandwiches again :)
*Location*: TBA Suggestions?
*Remote Participation? *Last time there were a couple of requests for
remote participation - would a Google Hangout work?

I've also created a *Meetup* event:
http://www.meetup.com/Webmaker-BC/events/99173512/ as an experiment in
reaching more people.

There are a few agenda items, with room for yours:

- *Open Data Day - Feb 23 <http://opendataday.org/> * (hoping Herb can
attend and update us)

- Erik and I hacked on a Popcorn.js Plugin *for* Open Data last week:
finding data we thought kids could get excited about wasn't easy. We can
demo Popcorn Maker and our idea for feedback.

- GenOpen <https://wiki.mozilla.org/GenOpen>

'Global Youth Open Source' project I've been working on as part of Mozilla
Reps: <https://wiki.mozilla.org/GenOpen>, we hope to launch this project
in early March with a series of hackjams, would like to run one here (maybe
this is how we can get CAGIS girls hacking :) - looking for feedback.

- Hacker/Maker spaces Victoria

Anyone on the list want to talk about this/share what they are doing now?
Jentery are you Aurthor, Suan Mikka or Paige able to attend and talk about
your space at U of Vic? I can ask Makerspace V ? Some of us are interested
in Family Hacker spaces, would love your thoughts. Also contacting:
http://interartscentre.ca/

Any other topics you would like to see/present?

Thanks so much,

-Emma

Hi team,

I think that Google+ hangouts can be a good solution for livestreaming your
events and bringing others in. Check out these case studies from TechSoup
Canada: http://www.techsoupcanada.ca/node/7028

Thanks for creating the meetup - I believe it's a great way to find new
people.

By the way, I'm working with a Victoria volunteer to set up a new
NetSquared Victoria group that will have the mandate of holding nonprofit
tech meetups. If/when the group is formed I'll connect you two, because you
sound like perfect candidates for co-producing a couple of training
sessions.

Good to hear from you, Emma.

Unfortunately, no one at MLab is able to make the January meeting.
However, we should be able to attend in February or --- more likely ---
in March. How's that sound?

In the meantime, my English graduate seminar this semester is building
an online/offline exhibit. Perhaps the project will interest some folks
on this list. The syllabus is here: http://bit.ly/WZbVta. And we'll be
adding to the repo between now and May, when the exhibit launches (with
a physical component in the Maltwood Gallery).

Looking forward to meeting you in the near future.

Best,
Jentery

Hey, Emma! We can use my office again if folks thought that was decent and accessible.

I bet we could also ask the library, though. Scott, do you know if that is true?

I'd have to say that remote participation is hard for something like this. Probably not a very satisfying experience for either the remotee or the real time participants. Video conferencing is just hard, and requires that everyone is engaged looking into the camera, has the right microphones, follows the conventions of a video chat (ie, speak in turns) - but, I may be the outlier. If folks disagree I'd be happy to be overruled :)

We could make sure we take good notes and have a summary conversation here on the list.
Brett

Hi all,

I could make the TIE Lab at UVic available as a regular location for these meets. There is meter pay parking though but not much $ I think. I have one boardroom that can sit 12 with two connecting rooms with 5 + 3 workstations. The front door could be closed and kids could be unleashed there for child-care needs (I do that every once in awhile and also have a box of coloring stuff, etc., there). I also have another room in another wing that could fit 15 but tight (has 3 round tables of 6 but the furniture is too big for the room IMHO). All are VC connected so if you need capacity to be larger, we could always connect the two rooms by video. We could do off-site participation using blue jeans network. We piloted a multi-access class and it was quite fine for remote users.

I would need to set up someone who will be a regular attendee with key and alarm access, however. My schedule is hectic juggling work and often single parenting so I wouldn't want the responsibility to be key master. We could use this space this Monday but I might not be there (Mondays suck for me in general), so whomever would need to come out today, tomorrow, or Monday to campus to grab the key and alarm code.

Cheers,
Valerie

Just wanted to thank Val for this generous offer (even if she couldn't be
there), I really like the idea of having space for kids.
For this Monday (as Val knows) we'll be meeting at St. Margaret's school, I
wasn't able to pickup keys this time around. Our agenda for this week
includes discussion on our goals for 2013, which will likely include
running regular events and it will be great to have options like this.
Thank you again Val - and we really hope to get you out in person at some
point!
I/We will take good notes and post those, in absence of remote attendance
this time around, and see how that works.

No problem. I single parent on Mondays and it's hectic with piano lessons already till 5:00. If you have meets on Wed/Thurs/Fri, I can make those. Otherwise, I'll keep watch on the notes.

TTYL,

Valerie
