If I'm reading (and occasionally posting) a group such as
m.s.thunderbird, is there a keystroke combination equivalent to right
clicking the current group and clicking "Get messages".

It's a sort of "Refresh view" action. I'm using Thunderbird 14.0 if that
helps.

I posted a reply to my own article in m.test and then pressed F5.
Nothing happened. I pressed it several times, over a period of about a
minute. Still nothing. I'm pretty certain that a right click on the
group, then "Get messages" would have fetched my new post almost
instantly (albeit after a tiny initial delay).

I think this is a focus issue. It seems that after sending a new post,
the "Write:" window closes, and Thunderbird gets the focus back, but
within the Thunderbird window, whatever has the focus doesn't respond to F5.

I clicked in the message that I'd just replied to, pressed F5, and my
new post appeared.

So, is there a keystroke combination which will take the focus to the
message section first, so the F5 gets noticed?

Usually, a post will appear within a few seconds, but sometimes it takes
about a minute. I;'ve set TB to check & d/l every 10 minutes, that's
good enough for me.

I've found the sequence:

1. Write
2. Ctrl+Return to send the post
3. F6 to switch the focus
4. F5 to "Get Mesages" (aka "Refresh")

 eliminates all the waiting. :-)

Ctrl+t will fetch new messages in the group you are viewing.

Ctrl+t must be broken on my keyboard; it doesn't do anything noticeable
for me. It's possible that some other application has usurped Ctrl+t but
it's not a shortcut that I recognise.

It doesn't work on the latest version and has been replace by F5.

It doesn't do anything for me and it's not listed in moz kb Tb shortcuts
page.

Curses - that extra 5cm stretch is going to waste a lot of my energy
(I'm not very energetic)

Well then, add that to the list of things the devs decided to
change/fix/replace/remove for reasons known only to them...

One of the keyboard shortcuts used by TB had to be removed because it
conflicted with Lightning. Since I don't use [Ctrl] shortcuts I did not
focus on which, rather the reason.

that would have been Shift+c...
Which was Mark all read.
Then it was changed to Ctrl+Shift+c so Lightening could use Shift+c
Then it was all changed again so Ctrl+Shift+c gets the calendar and
Shift+c marks read.
