Dont know when this started but now there is a newsgroup named news, the server is
news, the email add. is us...@domain.invalid and other settigs at their default values
... I tried to remove it, no problem but when i reopen TB, it comes back ! Actually,
if i remove it then go to the Account Settings window again, i can see that acccount
again!! I tried :
1.Remove the account
2. CLose TB (1.5.0.8)
3. GO to Profiles folder\News and delete the folders news-1,news-2 (at least 10
folders) > remove files news.rc news.msf etc..
4. ReOpen TB
I
t comes again !!! and it recreates a single folder + 1 or 2 files (rc and msf)

In Account settings window:
the newsrc file for that account is :
(My APP Folder Path here)\Thunderbird\Profiles\u7d8l256.default\News\news.rc

Local directory is :
(My app folder path here)\Thunderbird\Profiles\u7d8l256.default\News\news-14

After that, i uninstalled all my extensions (including TalkBack) and restarted TB but
no change !!

CAn anyone tell me what it is ?

I had this problem awhile back and after much searching I discovered
that my secnews Netscape account and my news Mozilla account somehow got
"crosslinked" and the fix that worked for me was to delete both
completely (including any leftovers in my profile) and recreating them
..haven't seen that phantom "news account" since.

Thanks very much .... I will tell exactly what i did(may help someone like me) :

I deleted news.mozilla.org account and the profile\new\news.mozilla.org folder and
the rc and msf files but the news account was still there so the text step :
Microsoft Newsgroups. I checked the profile path(and rc file path) in Account
settings and went to Profile\news folder. There were 3 copies :
msnews.microsoft.com (and associated rc and msf file)
msnews.microsoft.com-1 (and associated rc and msf file)
msnews.microsoft.com-2 (and associated rc and msf file)
The profile path(or Store folder, whatever you call it) was msnews.microsoft.com-2 so
i deleted the com and com-1 folders and the associated files and BINGO!. Microsoft
newsgroup was there (without a single change) and the news folder GONE!!! I sunscribe
to this newsgroup and installed the extensions, everything is going fine....

I will be glad to know that how this happened ?

The problem with not removing the files when the account is removed is
bug #128744.

Your problem might be caused by selecting a link to a newsgroup in a Web
page or E-mail message. There are at least two bug reports on this.

See the following:
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=128744>
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160505>
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344849>

Note from the first two (numbers below 200000) that this is an old
problem.

Ayush,
Thanks for responding to my post about the new invalid news account.
I remember that address, us...@domain.invalid, that is just what I had.
The xxxx.default\News\ folder had additional folders named;
news
news-1
news-2

There were actually (5) additional folders. I just deleted all of them.
The others are all Valid account names.
I appreciate the info.
Thanks again. ;-)
