Tools, Options, Attachments, View & Edit Actions. What's
listed for PDF?
--
Jordon
No "Options" under Tools for Linux version 3.0b2 but under:
Edit - Preferences - Download Actions
Type PDF has action "Open with evince" which is correct (I can manually
open PDF files with evince).
Thanks,
Phil.

but not automagicaly for Tbird?
works here - just check the box telling Tbird to do it this way all the
time...
maybe you want to set view attachments in line under the view menu?
that doesn't seem to work - hmmm...I've only got linux vers 2.0.0.21,
not that would make a diff.
you want to view it in line, Yes?

Curious. I have no entry for pdf files and there doesn't seem to be a way to
add one on that page. (TB/linux)

you need to tell Tbird what to use, then it shows there.
when 1st brought up, using ubuntu, it automagicly suggests document
viewer, which is evince. document viewer then appears in the option
dialog box.
I was just about to post a similar comment.
I don't think I've ever looked at Download Actions before. I assume
that the nine actions shown are default ones, because I haven't
consciously added any, and, as TRB says, there's no apparent way to add
any preferences via Download Actions itself.

How exactly do you "tell TB what to use"? When the dialogue box comes
up, I always ask TB to open .pdf files in Acrobat, but that clearly
hasn't been added as a preference in Download Actions.

No such box under:
Edit-Preferences-Attachments-Download Actions-View and Edit Actions
(Linux version 3.0b2).
> maybe you want to set view attachments in line under the view menu?
Would be nice but at the moment I just want to click on the file and
open it in a new Evince window.

See above . .
Using linux, Tbird offers "document viewer" as the default choice and
wants to know if that is what to always use for .pdf files.
Doesn't windoze offer you a choice? Should be Adobe but its been awhile
since I've even looked at windoze...
One more time:
click on .pdf attachment
Tbird opens dialog box offering (for linux) "document viewer"
or alternate choice check (which brings up a blank box 1st time around)
tell Tbird to use document viewer and in the future it shows up in that
blank dialog box.
check the "always use this application box for this file type" and there
is no more of this dialog.

I am addressing a .pdf attachment which shows as attachment in the
email. Click on that attachment and the Tbird dialog comes up. After
filling that in, .pdf will show up under edit>preferences>attachments.
Check the "use this app for this file type" and you should be done with it.

vers 3.0b2 of what?

once you do it the first time via independent attachment of .pdf type,
it should.
no, it is the box which come up when you click the .pdf attachment at
the bottom of your view screen,
>>> Jordon wrote:
>>>> Philip Rhoades wrote:
In that same "Opening [attachment name]" dialogue box, in
addition to selecting an action and/or an application, you also need
to check the "Do this automatically for files like this from now on."
box. TB will then add your choice of action/application to the
"Download Actions" list, and it won't ask you again in the future.

I found that to be true on TB on FreeBSD too.
I had to shut off that automatic handler and then try to look
at a .pdf file. Then it let me tell it to use xpdf which I
had installed, to display .pdf files. After that, the automatic
handler utility disappeared and now I have a line in preferences/applications
that says:
PDf file Use xpdf
and it works.
I suspect it is similar in other UNIX versions such as Linux.
Anyway, I also could not find a way to just set it to use xpdf
for .pdf files. I had to go through the long drawn out procedure.

For users of Tb 2.x there is an add-on named MIME Edit that provides a
means to create entries.

Who is General Failure, and why is he searching my HDD?
Kernel Restore reported Major Error used BSOD to msg the enemy!
may be somehow that entry has been corrupted.
Delete that entry.
Select an message having a pdf file attached to it.
Double click on the attachment to open it.
Tb will prompt to select application. Select that and also check the
/use this app for this file type/ option as suggested by goodwin.
I don't think anything is corrupt at Philip's setup - sounds to be
working correctly.
As for the others, dunno.
I have since found that the problem is not with all PDFs - some do
actually open by clicking on them - now I have to find out what the
difference is between those and the ones that DON'T open but only have a
SAVE option . .
I'd love to be able to "Do this automatically for files like this from
now on", but unfortunately that option is greyed out in the dialogue box
that is open in front of me right now.
I only have the option to "Open with ..." (and Adobe doesn't
automatically appear in the menu space) or "Save to Disk".
Any suggestions?
Paul Westcott
I thought this was covered previously in the thread - for the first
time, you need to specify/browse to the application (document viewer or
evince).
Once that is done, it /will/ show the "do this automatically..."
dialogue and the choice will show up in the applications available box.

That sounds like a problem with the way the attachment is

View --> Message Source (or use the <Ctrl-U> keyboard shortcut)
and look at the headers of the attachment. You should see something
like:
--=====================_12166609==_
Content-Type: video/x-ms-wmv; name="TheFlea.wmv"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="TheFlea.wmv"

Content-Type: video/x-ms-wm; name="wrecked_UFO.wm"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="wrecked_UFO.wm"
If you compare the "Content-Type:"s for the ones that open
properly and the ones that don't, you should see a difference. Since
the cause is on the sender's end, however, I don't think there's
anything you can do about it, because the cause is in the mail client,
and not the result of anything the sender is doing.

To the right of that "Open with ..." option there should be a
drop-down arrow. If there isn't, I don't know what to tell you. If
there is, click on it and the selection should expand to show an
additional option of "Other". Click on that and then, as Goodwin has
posted, browse to the application you want to use, select it, and then
the "Do this automatically ..." option should become available.
Hopefully, this should resolve at least some of the problems
you're having opening .pdf attachments. You might also want to take a
look at the post I just made in response to Philip's problem,
regarding attachments that are mis-identified by the sending client.
There certainly is a drop-down arrow, and the only option in the
drop-down menu is Adobe (as I noted, Adobe doesn't automatically appear
in the menu space). However, having chosen the Adobe option, the "Do
this automatically for files like this from now on" instruction remains
greyed out. Therefore I'm unable to instruct TB to always make that
choice, and so the dialogue box will reappear next time a .pdf
attachment needs to be opened.

You are correct:
--NextPart_000_0025_01BDBAA5.86C80EB0
Content-Type: application/octet-stream;
name="w_20090514192700-25p001.pdf"

------_=_NextPart_001_01C9D13F.FDE92B2F
Content-Type: application/pdf;
name="885327.pdf"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename="885327.pdf"
When I edit the mail file and change:
"octet-stream"
to:
"pdf"
the attachment then opens properly - although I had exit TB before
editing and I had delete the ".msf" file a couple of times before it
worked . .
Thanks for that!

I have seen that quite a bit mwith stuff from particular senders of new
posts. They are using Win XP where the XP file associations are using "Name
Space" without adequate MIME type entries in the registry. That can result
in SM & Tb both using "octet-stream" because there registry scan could not
find a MIME for the *.* file extension being attached.
So basically it's an OS configuration problem on the senders end, if the
message client depends on the windows registry storing MIME for any
attachment being sent.

Try this. Select the "Save to Disk" option (but don't click on
OK) and see if the "Do this automatically ..." option becomes
available. If it does, select the "Open with ..." option again and
see if "Do this automatically ..." remains available. If it does, you
should be all set. If it doesn't, there was nothing lost by trying.

I couldn't remember the "octet-stream" string, so I couldn't tell
you exactly what to look for. Glad you found it.

That's understandable.

That's also understandable. The ".msf" file is an index file.
Editing the mail file changes its size and changes the position of
everything following the edit, so it would need to be re-indexed.

You're welcome.
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately choosing to "Save to Disk"
doesn't "un-grey" the "Do this automatically ..." option.
