I tested deleting 17MB of attachments from an e-mail on another IMAP
server, and it took about 5 minutes, but worked. The time is spent with
the status bar showing "Downloading message..." and a progress bar
gradually filling green. Curious that it takes this long, since I can
download the attachment in ~15s.
I see this problem on two different machines, one running Windows XP and
one running Windows 7.
What could be going wrong with this particular server to cause deleting
just large attachments to hang? Why is it so slow on other servers even
when it works?
Out of curiosity, is the server that hangs one that is operated by GoDaddy?

nope
What option is chosen for Delete message action in that account settings
of that IMAP account ( Tools > Account Settings > That Imap account >
Server settings > 'When I delete a message : < 3 different options> )?
If you choose any other of rest does that improve the performance ?
Also see if lowering the cached connection to lower value like 2/4 does
fix this issue [1] ?

Have you tried not to delete all 14 attachments at once? Try with only a
few or even just one first, and see what happens.
In worst case deleting 14 attachments one by one would be a lengthy
procedure, but should work in the end.
