I can configure Thunderbird to request a receipt for all messages, or
request a receipt for an individual message as I'm composing it, but I
don't see any way to mark a specific entry in my address book so that I
always request receipts for messages sent to it.

I have only a couple of addressees from whom I want receipts, and I don't
want to count on remembering to ask for one in each message.

Is there something in Thunderbird 2.x that I haven't found?

Can Thunderbird 3.x do this?

Keep in mind (you may already know this) that Return Receipts are
unreliable for determining your recipient got your email.

In Thunderbird 2, Tools > Options > Advanced tab
Determine how Thunderbird handles return receipts [click button]

When I receive a request for a return receipt:
(嚙瘟) Never send a return receipt
( ) Allow return receipts for some messages ... more

I believe that is the default selection. I also guess that most all
email clients will have a similar setting.

That's how it handles requests for receipts in message I ->receive.

I want to request receipts for messages I ->send, but just for
messages sent to a couple of addressees (from my address book).

I know I can do it on a per-message basis as I compose the message, but
I don't want to rely on my memory.

Well, of course! :-) That's without question.

My point was that *everyone* can configure their email clients as
described above to not sent receipts. So even if you do request one - to
see when they opened the mail - chances remain high that you will not be
notified.

If you were emailing me, you would never know when or if I opened it ...

Yes, yes, I know that. However, the person(s) with whom I'm
corresponding request and honor said receipts.

Do you always try to second guess people this way?

And, you apparently can't answer the question anyway.

Ok, you didn't really say that.

Of course! Isn't it a lot of fun? :-)

Nope. I responded mostly because I don't care for return receipts. To
me, and to others who've posted about them, they're an invasion of
privacy.

Of course, there is the other, obvious, aspect. Because they OPENED the
email doesn't mean they read it, or that they will use any information
therein.
So, I DON'T return receipts.

When you send an email to multiple recipients, Thunderbird uploads _one_
single copy of the email to your mail server, to be delivered to _all_
of the recipients.

To do what you ask for, Thunderbird would have to upload multiple separate
copies of the email, with differences between each of the uploaded copies.
Thunderbird does not do this.

Thunderbird does not do "mail merge" (see "http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mail_merge").
"Mail merge" is also about uploading multiple separate copies of the email
(personalized for each recipient). If Thunderbird does not do "mail merge",
then I would not expect Thunderbird to do what you are asking for.

Don't use TB for e-mail, so cannot answer the question as posed.
However, could you use a second profile for those messages requesting a
receipt - a bit messy, but may work.
