Attachments (images, PDFs, .doc files, etc.) which are intact and
readable when I view them in my gmail imap account using my browser are
corrupted after being downloaded to TB. If there are multiple images,
only the first one shows up and only its first few lines are visible.
PDFs and .doc files give an error message when I try to open them. (I
haven't received any e-mail with multiple PDFs or multiple .doc files,
or had time to send myself a test e-mail with such multiples, but I'm
guessing that, similarly, only the first one would show up, and be
similarly corrupted.)

View Source shows that the single attachment has a proper header and
quite a bit of code, but then seems to break off -- at least, if I
remember correctly what should appear *after* an attachment.

This behavior started fairly recently, and I have not recently changed
any settings, either in gmail or in TB.

I was getting this problem with a Gmail IMAP account in Thunderbird 2 a
couple of years ago or more when I first started using Gmail and IMAP.
It was solved by setting this boolean option for the server:

mail.server.server6.fetch_by_chunks false

Obviously, this example shows that my mail server is server 6. If yours
is, for example, server 1, then you would set
mail.server.server1.fetch_by_chunks to false.

This forces the download of the attachment in a single chunk, otherwise
there can be corruption, apparently.

Hi. I only have mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks, already set to
false. But I also have mail.imap.fetch_by_chunks, which I now have set
to false. So I'm waiting to see whether that fixes the problem.

Thanks for the help.

You're welcome - I guess these are overarching options for all servers.
Hope it works.

The Config Editor will show the defaults which are used to generat intial
seting for new accounts.
mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks is an example. There should be a
version of this for the account Your having a problem with. Try filtering
on 'fetch_by_chunks'.

Gmail actually recommends this in their suggested settings for TB, along
with changing browser.cache.memory.capacity to 30720.

Still not working.

I had already filtered on that, and found only the two which I mention
above. (Also see my reply to next post, from Tarkus.)

Still not working.

My settings had long been exactly as listed there. (BTW, in 2.0 Config
Editor is under Thunderbird/Preferences rather than Tools/Options, at
least on the Mac.) Attachments are still coming through truncated.
Fortunately, I can get them using gmail's browser interface. But I
would certainly like to be able to get them in TB, especially since this
behavior only started in the past week or so.

I discovered today that attachments *sent* by TB are also being
truncated. This is very bad, because I have receipts that I *must*
send, for business reasons.

All my settings are (and previously were) exactly as specified by the
gmail recommendations which Tarkus references below. But the truncating
still happens, both when sending and when receiving.

Any more suggestions?

More information, which I just discovered: Apparently the attachments
*are* being sent correctly: I sent an e-mail with two attachments.
When I looked at it in TB's Sent folder, there was only one attachment
and it was truncated. But when I used gmail's browser interface and
looked at the same message in gmail's Sent folder, both attachment were
there, intact.

So is it possible that they *are* being sent correctly (and possibly
received correctly -- there's no way to tell) but are being *displayed*
incorrectly in TB (i.e. only partially)? Please note that they appear
truncated both in the normal viewing window and using View Source, and
also when I save the attachments (whether received or sent) and try to
open them.

Any idea what could be causing this?
