Trying to filter out porn spam in binary newsgroups so I set a filter to
delete any messages with ".rar" in the subject line but it is not working.

Would it help you to just mark the messages as read?

The concept of 'delete' sorta baffles me.

First off file extension name in subject filtering will work. I use one
to ignore .wmv mutipart postings in a group.

x match any of the following
subject > contains > .wmv
subject > contains > .rar
action
delete message

Mike, in the context of this filter, delete is similar with ignore.
Difference is the headers do not get added to the local store so the
local count will be lower and file size smaller.

I was mistaken-it is working. Apparently the computer needed to be
rebooted before the changes took effect. I was under the impression
that after making changes you still just had to exit Thunderbird and
then reopen it.

A TB restart is not needed in the case of going back to the Tools menu
and selecting command Run Filters on Folder. For this Delete kind of
filter, TB marks headers with a red slashed 'O' to left of subject then
it dumps the marked items. That has been how it worked for me with TB17.
