Is there an address book ad-on or alternative for Thunderbird so that
one can make changes to an address from inside T-Bird?  I really liked
the program but I find it really irritating that if I get an address
change or addition from someone I have to open another program to make
the changes.

Timothy,

I think many could be confused by your wording here... By "open another
program" do you really mean "open another window" (in this case, the
address book window)? If so, it is really NOT another program, it is
part of the same ThunderBird program. If so, I can understand your
irritation with this. My ThunderPlunger addon
<https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/thunderplunger/> has
code which does most of what I think you might want. Contact me by
clicking on my name top of this page and email to the address shown. Let
me know what you are looking for. I may be able to make some changes to
address your needs.

Are you a Mac user by any chance?

Yes, he's using Unison/2.1.5 which is Mac exclusive.

Ooops, yeah, I guess I forgot to make that clear.  So, to any who
weren't sure, last I checked Thunderbird uses the Mac's address book but
to make any changes, one has to open the Mac address book.

You could use windows which lets you do the operation from within TB ;-)

Anyone know if this means that addons which manipulate the address book
simply don't work on Mac? Or have the addon programming interfaces been
"mapped" somehow to Apple ones?

Thanks

For comments on Mac/Tbird integration, see this.  It probably won't tell
you anything you don't already know, but the links might be useful:
http://www.neilturner.me.uk/2007/08/21/thunderbird_and_mac_os_x.html

For more info on importing addresses into the Tbird address book:
http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20040905025741769

Searching on "Thunderbird address book on mac" will give you a bunch
more hits.

Also, Tbird should be saving addresses for your outgoing mail in
Collected Addresses in its address book.

Finally, IIRC even on the Mac, you can build your own address book from
incoming mail: right click on name > select Add to Address Book (there
are other options, too.)

FWIW, I avoided the Mac's address book. I d/l TBird as soon as I bought
the Mac, and that's what I used; I never used Mail. I no longer use the
Mac, though, too restrictive in too many ways (as your plea for help
illustrates), and the software is too expensive.

Respectfully disagree.  I have been a TB user since it originated.
First on Windows, then 7 years ago I switched to Apple/MAC/OSx.  I have
all of my addresses in the TB addressbook and my OSX addressbook is empty.
