Using Thunderbird 17.0.4 and Firefox 21.0. When I pick on a link in
Thunderbird it takes almost a minute to bring up the page. If I copy the
link location and paste it in Firefox it appears very quickly.
Any suggestions?

Is FF open when you click the link?

FF is open when I select the link. FF is also set as the default.

OK - somethings wrong - got any extensions?
AV software and/or firewall?

FF is also set as the default.

That should be unrelated.
My Tbird is instant when FF is open already.
But you're on FF 21 while I'm on the 17 ESR so there could be something
new I'm not aware of - someone else will know.

There might be multiple reasons for this so take this with a grain of
sault...

I have been experiencing something like this for a long time. But only
5-20 seconds, not as bad as 1 minute. On recent investigation, I'm
thinking it might be related to
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=491947

In my case it starts after thunderbird has been up for period of some
time. In other words, if I restart thunderbird then open a link returns
to a nominal 0-2 seconds. There seems to be much disk IO when it happens.
