Support for write LDAP

Digging a little deeper, I found this infamous bug
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86405) which has done
nothing to fix up the situation.
Is there any alternative way to sync the address books? Why is this bug
not being fixed?
Can you suggest any extensions to sync the address book (except
gysnc/google contacts sync etc because I don't have a Google account).

If you look at the bug's dependency list, some things have been done.
But indeed there is a long way to go.
There is no lack of interest, but there is a lack of people with the
skill AND the time to make it happen (and apparently, at one time,
money), and the work is non-trivial

You would think that some of the big organizations that have said they
want this so badly would have by now stepped up to do some of the work.
Anyway, http://nakedape.cc/wiki/WritableLdapAddressBookIdeas offers some
important thoughts. And perhaps more information is needed at
https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:LDAP_Address_Books to address. If
there are any basic issues missing in 86405's blocking dependency list
please file a new bug.

I have come across Zimbra address sharing and sync with Google. Although
I would root for everything 'local' i.e. Thunderbird should perhaps sync
with a local address book; just to cite the example of Evolution as a
PIM. This, I believe is the missing part of the action in otherwise a
near perfect app.
