TB on Vista

Cannot get email...says folder is being processed please wait until
processed.

This happened shortly after a windows defender update so I am guessing
its related. Its a file def update for KB915597. I cant even find the
darn thing in my installed updates to uninstall it. Its not listed

Any ideas as I cant get email anymore...

Thanks
Bill

close the program and delete all the *.msf files from the
mail section of the TB profile.

I looked at those files and thats all my work etc...quite a bit to
lose..So I created a new profile which I suppose would have the same
effect and the problem persists. I also did a system restore to remove
the Defender update and the problem is still there. Really dont know now
what could have caused this

I also checked via Web mail to see if anything on the server could be
the problem and there is no mail there

I am now really at a loss.

Any other thoughts?

thanks

your mail isn't kept in the *.msf files. They're kept in
the file that don't contain extensions, such as inbox,
drafts, sent, etc. So, go ahead and delete the *.msf files.

.msf files are indexing files. They tell the program which
way things are sorted, what messages are flagged, tagged,
killed, watched, and other things. When you delete them
[with the program closed], they will be rebuilt upon the
restart of the program.

Something I forgot to mention ...I have a gmail account and it connects
and works ok with that one. Its my ISP Bellsouth/AT&T thats the problem.
But it works ok with Windows Mail and outlook so I am thinking its not
the ISP or maybe they are sabotaging TB? :-)...

Thanks again

I had the same problem as Bill this morning. I noticed one thing that
occurred before opening Thunderbird - McAfee Security Center had
auto-updated. This was a problem for my system a few weeks ago that caused
me to have to perform a total restore.

Any ideas?

If you toggle the status of 'Allow anti-virus clients to quarantine
....' option at Tools > Options>Privacy>Anti-Virus and restart
Thunderbird and try to download mails again , does it works normally ?

Tried that. It continues as connected to server, trying to fetch until it
times out.

You may see this page "http://kb.mozillazine.org/Folder_being_processed"

I'm suspecting 1st reason 'Messages with bad headers or header fields
left blank'.
Using your web browser login to your mail account , look for any such
message in new messages . If you have any , either download or forward
it to any other account and then delete it . Now try to download mails
using TB.

Have you tried other suggestions ,listed in that page ?

Try two things also :
1. recheck account settings of that account at Tools > account settings
|> that account > server settings .
2.Stop your antivirus program completely . Start Thunderbird in safe
mode ( Start > programs > thunderbird [safe mode]. Send a mail to
yourself. Now
try to download mails .

Jack & NIR

I am totally lost . Coming to you now with Windows Mail

I have tried just about everything, deleting mail via web mail, nothing is
on server.
Mcafee did do an update but I honestly cannot recall if it was before or
after. Seems like there is one daily.

I also posted this in the TB mozilla forum and it seems like others are
having issues. Like some cyber bandit has popped up.

The only thing I am thinking left to do is completely uninstall Mcafee and
see if it helps. Mcafee came with my PC and has two months left of free
support. If it worked I would go back to Avast. I am also going to call my
ISP and see if any other users are reporting TB errors. Long shot but never
know.

Thanks for all the responses.

Instead of uninstall , try to stop/disable Mcafee . You may need to
restart your system to stop some Mcafee process , still running even
after you disabled it. Now try to download mail.

I have totally deactivated McAfee Security Center. By safe mode do you mean
"no extensions?" I tried that too. No luck. Only thing I can think is to
backup all of my messages and address books and uninstall TB, then reinstall
and reconfigure. What a pain!

Same as Jack. Safe mode doesnt help, and its a real pain to disable Mcafee.
So many things to stop and not sure which one is relevant. I turned off just
about everything I could and no luck. I wish they had a switch to disable
everything one shot. They have a ton of services running thats why I would
consider the uninstall.

Tks

Is there any doubt that A/V programs are evil?

I've never used them and have never gotten a virus. I would never put up with such clearly unnecessary hassles.

Rich,

I'm going to uninstall McAfee and TB, reinstall TB and see what happens.

I had a similar issue a couple of months ago with my other mail program and
McAfee's auto update. A notice went out from McAfee stating that some could
have issues! I sent many emails and never received a return from McAfee.

Good luck on that front! I'm through with them.

Best,

Jack

I have been hit with the same problem--no mail but mail out. And it
was after a MacAfee update (if you disable the programme, it works). I
had 70 mins on the chatline (text) with MacAfee technical support.
Nothing worked and I was told to do a scan in DOS mode. I won't of
course. I think we have to wait for a move by MacAfee to correct this.

From the mozilla forum. I tried it and it worked

TB is back in business

Here it is:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
McAfee: Please hold windows key in your key board near ctrl key and press R
(Windows key+R)(same as start/run)
McAfee: You will get a run window.
McAfee: Please type services.msc in the run window and click Ok.
McAfee: Please look for McAfee redirector service in the list and right
click and click stop.

Following the same steps and clicking "Start" will turn the firewall back
on.

Use at your discretion but it does instantly allow your e-mail to download

Another data point in the meantime: My wife is using Mozilla on her

Another YES vote! Works for me!

Now, begs the question of "What are the ramifications?"

Will this stay set this way, must I do it every boot-up?
McAfee and TBird were compatible before; what changed?

From the tone of the mozila forum post I would guess or hope Mcafee
will have a fix in an update.

Seems its only the firewall disabled which is no big deal for me.
Windows firewall and router firewall are good enough. Only had those on
my old system with XP and never had a days problem.

Ditto. Got the update last night. Incoming mail stopped. Outgoing
mail still active.

I had a problem like this before that cleared either when I moved my
inbox messages to inbox old (unlikely) or when I deleted the right
message using webmail (more likely).

This time no luck. Removing the msf files got me one step closer:
now I get an empty progress bar.

I installed McAfee because I got a virus that removed administrator
privileges from all accounts and I had to reformat.
There are other email programs that work. Is it time to set up a home
Outlook account?

Yes that worked for me.
Don't understand though: this turns off the firewall? Then why did my
