If I change the default printer in Windows, Thunderbird does not change
it's setting when printing and retains the old printer selection even
after a reboot. Help, I want TB to reset the selected printer to the new
default automatically.

Hi Ron,

In my experience, TB & FF do not follow the "default printer" convention
that all other Windows programs do. Both of those programs remember the
"last used" printer instead. I don't mind it (actually I prefer it)
because I usually print to a PDF driver so as not to waste paper on
spill over blank pages that seems so common on web pages and email.

Others have reported their systems use the Windows default, but none I
have ever worked on act that way.

I just ran a test. If TBird is active when you change your default
printer, you must terminate and then relaunch TBird. Then it will use
the new default.

Tell me more. :-)

I did a Google search on "PDF driver" and came up with what
appear to be the names of several different ones. What do you use
and/or recommend.

Not my findings here. FF & TB both will use the "last used printer"
rather than the "Windows default". This has been consistent with dozens
of installs. I have *never* seen either program revert to the Windows
default in /any/ instance.

Hi Ken,

I use Paperport to print PDF copies of web pages, check free
verifications, etc. It prints a PDF copy to a "Desktop" of folders. I
also use a DocuCom PDF Driver.

There is a free PDF driver called PDF995 (the cost of purchasing it is
$9.95, hence the name) that you can use also.

If you care for more info, let me know,

Thanks Terry. That solves my problem.

I just did a test. I have five printers setup (some virtual).

1. I printed a message from this thread on a printer that is not my
default.

2. I changed my default printer to a third one.

3. I closed TBird.

4. I relaunched TBird.

5. I started to print another message from this thread.

TBird selected my new default printer, neither the previous printer used
nor the old default.

Well I stand corrected. It appears that TB2 now reverts to the default
printer on each launch. Version 1.5 did not, nor did any other versions
prior to it. Silly me to think it wouldn't change...

FF2 still will launch with the last used printer (which I prefer).

I want to confirm that FF (ver 2.0.0.3) and TB (ver 1.5.0.10) both do
not revert to the default printer after a change of default printer
whether either is simply restarted or a complete reboot is performed.
This occurs both in Win98SE and XP. The last printer used is always
selected. I have no idea what happens in a Mac.

Yes, both use the last used. TB2 uses Windows default printer.

TB 1.5.0.12, Win XP SP2:
I've had the same problem with TB refusing to go to the Windows default
printer. I found these entries in the about:config for TB that refer to
an obsolete printer. Can I delete these somehow without causing
problems? (This is an incomplete list, but it gives the idea.) Thanks.

Hi David,

For next time, it would have been better to start a new thread rather
than dig up an old one.

You can remove the entries if they are no longer relevant. But that has
nothing to do with TB 1.5 not using the default printer on startup. So
you can't "fix" it the way you want.

You can upgrade to version 2.0.0.4 and you will get the results you
seek. I personally liked having the program use the "last used" printer
rather than the Windows default and miss it in version 2. But everyone
has different preferences. It would be nice if the devs made it an
option (Last Used or Default) rather than just taking it away.

Thanks for the advice on starting a new thread, and I'll do that next time.

I'd be happy if TB 1.5 used the "last used" printer, which I'm pretty
sure it does on another installation. But on this one, it kept calling
up the defunct printer, even after printing to the new default printer
or pdf, and I can only assume it's because of the configuration. I've
since deleted those entries in the prefs file, and it now comes up with
the Windows default printer, and will probably use the last printer if I
change it. But this takes care of me for now. I'll probably upgrade to
TB 2 before long. I wasn't sure if my extensions will all work, though
some may no longer be needed with the added TB2 features.

David
