I allowed Tbird to update itself from 7.0 to 8.0 a few days ago. Since
then I have had any number of crashes, sometimes within a few minutes of
restarting.

I have faithfully sent crash report every time.

Today I downloaded a COMPLETE Tbird 8.0 (UK english, if that should
matter) and installed it. Now I'm waiting to see if a new, fresh
installation cured the problem.

Nope - it did not (cure the problem). Crashing again.

It seems to crash when I'm reading newgroup messages, but (maybe) not
when I'm in email. Hmmm...

how does one submit crash reports for Tbird?

RSS has been problematic in Tbird/Firefox. I gave up up on it a long
time ago, use RSSOWL instead. It's free, come with a mess of built-on
links which you will have to winnow to suit yourself.

Do a complete uninstall (with Revo or the like) before reinstalling from
a fresh download. Back up the Profiles and Extensions folders first.

In Tools-->Options, set your Thunderbird start page to this:
about:crashes

Then go to Go-->Mail_Start_Page. You should get a page of submitted
crash reports. Click on the latest ones, and tell us the crash ID or URL
of your latest crash reports. We can then look at the data specific to
your crash and have a better idea of what is causing the problem.

Chris, where did this little goody come from?

I can't find a setting for sumitting crash reports at all, much less
this method.

applies to crash reports? CI did not mention the need to install any
extensions...

of course

> CI did not mention the need to install any extensions...
perhaps because the addon isn't absolutely necessary. but it is far more
powerful. and it avoids having about:crashes in you face on startup

Quick note for everyone looking for Thunderbird crash reports etc.

For at least TB 6 and later, When you're looking at the main mail
viewing page (the tabbed view), the Help / Troubleshooting Information
menu item brings up a tab with lots of useful info, including links to
the about:plugins and about:buildconfig pages.

Starting with TB 9.0, which will move from the Earlybird to the Beta
channel Real Soon Now, the about:memory and about:crashes will also be
available from the Troubleshooting Information page.

If you can think of any other things that would be useful on the
Troubleshooting page, file a request Bugzilla and copy me on it.

I looked at your latest few reports, and they all have the same crash
signature [FormatStringWithHostNameByID], which means it's the same
cause for each crash. Unfortunately, there are no bug reports associated
with that signature, so it's hard to get info regarding any research
that may have been done on that type of crash.

The closest thing I could find as a bug about special characters in in
passwords. It does seem like all the bugs that mention
"FormatStringWithHostNameByID" are about the password manager.

If the crash happens when checking for messages for a specific account,
try deleting the password for that account. You should then be asked to
enter it the next time you check for messages on that account.

1. Go to Tools-->Options-->Security-->Passwords.
2. Click on [Saved Passwords].
3. Select the password you want to remove.
4. Click [Remove].

If Thunderbird crashes, the Mozilla Crash Reporter should come up,
giving you the option send send a report or not.

about:crashes has been part of the Mozilla core code for a long while
now. Like about:config, it's easier to get to it in Firefox because you
can just type the URL in the location bar. In Thunderbird, there's no
location bar, so accessing "about" pages is more tricky. Because
about:config is so popular, the [Config Editor] button was added to the
Advanced preferences panel.

In <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=526802#c4>, I explained
the need for a UI path to about:crashes in Thunderbird, so it was added
to the Troubleshooting Information page in July. You should see it in
the next planned update (late December).

Thanks for looking into my problem. I suspect that it has to do with a
slightly unstable "Newshosting.com" .

With any luck it has improved by now.

Thunderbird is probably innocent, in this case.

Doubtful.

Notable in the crashes
1. only happening for version 8. no version 7 crashes
2. all crash comments are in French, except yours
3. crashes are still coming in. And the first crash was nov 8
