Why can't TB8 start a newsgroup fully closed
when I select that newsgroup ? TB8 has some
threads open, some closed and throws into the
bottom of the newsgroup.

Thanks,
Lynn

Thunderbird's behavior has always been to start all threads closed (if
that's how you left them) except for whichever thread has the first new
message. That one gets opened, and the first new message in the thread
appears somewhere in the visible list of headers.

I can't stand this behavior, but as usual the developers can't imagine
why anyone would want to use Thunderbird in any way except the way
*they* think makes sense.

The only workaround is to press "\" before you begin to read the group.

If it was just \, I would not be torqued. But TB8
(and all previous TBs) leave me somewhere near the
bottom.

BTW, I have my newsgroups organized LIFO.

In your TBird profile, find (or create) the file user.js. Insert the
following:

user_pref("mailnews.scroll_to_new_message", false);
// don't automatically expand thread with new message, bug #232562

Don't forget the semi-colon at the end of the first line. The second
line is merely a comment to tell you why you are doing this. See Bug
232562 at <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=232562>.

Alternatively, you can do the following:

1. On the TBird menu bar, select [Tools > Options].

2. On the Options window, select the Advanced button on the toolbar.

3. On the Advanced set of tabs, select the General tab.

4. On the General tab, select the Config Editor button.

5. On the about:config window, enter scroll_to in the Filter input area.

6. On the mailnews.scroll_to_new_message entry, double-click to change
it from True to False.

7. Close the about:config window.

8. Select the OK button on the Options window.

Note: If there is no mailnews.scroll_to_new_message entry in the
about:config window, create it.

1. Any place in the main part of the about:config window, right-click.

2. On the pull-down context menu, select [New > Boolean].

3. On the sequence of two New Boolean Value popup dialogues, the name
to input is
mailnews.scroll_to_new_message
and the value to select is
False
